CSX 98
Title:  CSX 98
Description:  A unit train of 3-bay covered hoppers, powered by an interesting visitor from out-of-town, rests on the CN, former C&NW, siding along W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd. at Stroebe, WI on 27 Mar. '18. I rarely see through freights with locomotives running long hood forward, so I thought this locomotive was at the tail end of the train. Then I noticed the crew in the cab and discovered that there was no locomotive at the other end. The former SOO main line is visible at right. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI until 14 Apr. '16 (not Outagamie Co., where Stroebe was erroneously placed on this site)).

CSX 403 and CSX 436
Title:  CSX 403 and CSX 436
Description:  An interesting pair of foreign visitors lead a through freight across Towmen Rd. while headed northeast via CN rails at Shawano Junction, Fox Crossing (originally Town of Menasha until 14 Apr. '16), Winnebago Co., WI on 30 Sep. '18. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. MillTown Paper, Inc., 1286 Ehlers Rd., an active rail customer, is partially visible in the background.

Title:  CSX 424, CSX 927, CSX 9014, et al.
Description:  A CN container train passes the Main St. overpass as it traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 13 Jun. '18. The white building beyond the train at right is, or was, Progressive Paper Storage, Inc. (formerly Kimberly-Clark Warehouse (K-C Warehouse)). It does not receive rail service, but it looks like there may have been a spur on the northwest side of the building in the past. Train had six locomotives, CN 2242, CN 2453, CN 5734, CSX 424, CSX 927, CSX 9014. Several of Neenah's hideous, modern buildings pollute the skyline in the background at right (obviously I am not a fan of modern, so-called, architecture).

Description:  A CN through freight traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 23 Jun. '19. Train had four locomotives, CN 3200, CEFX 1024, EMDX 1605 pulling, as well as CN 3153 pushing. The lead locomotives are passing the remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot. There are rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties stacked upon it. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. Eggers Div. of VT Industries, previously Eggers Industries, founded as Hardwood Products Co. in 1910, 164 N. Lake St., an active rail customer, is visible in the background at left.

Title:  CEFX 1038
Description:  CEFX 1038 was idling away in an unusual spot on CN, former C&NW, rails near Kampo Rd. at Neenah, WI on 3 Feb. '18. It rests on the short siding which is used to service Neenah's Southpark Industrial Center. When I pulled up to park and shoot it, I noticed two carloads of other rail fans photographing this odd occurrence. The SOO rails, also in use by CN, are in the foreground. The W. Title:  CSX 3131, BNSF 5791, UP 6473
Description:  A colorful trio of foreign visitors lead a through freight parallel to Harrison St. and approaching Kampo Rd. as it heads southwest via CN, former SOO, rails at Neenah, WI on 14 May '18. Neenah Foundry Plant 2 & Plant 3 are partially visible in the background. Plant 2 opened in 1960 and Plant 3 was built in 1967. Plant 1 opened in 1918 and stood about a mile to the north, until it was closed in 1994 and eventually demolished. A remnant of the former C&NW main line, now relegated to a passing siding, is visible to the right. I am curious to learn where the new turnout (stacked in pieces between the tracks) will be installed.

Title:  CN 2639, UP 6742, BNSF 4200, CN 2411
Description:  CN unit train of 3-bay covered hoppers parallels Hwy. 41 and approaches the Hwy. G overpass as it heads southwest via former SOO rails at Snells, WI on 20 May '18. Snells is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. This once small, rural community included a depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. I do not know if each railroad had their own small depot, or if one small depot served both railroads, I suspect it was the latter. It does not look like any substantial remnants of the community remain, even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone (it is not a station on the CN system map). The unit train of tank cars at right rests upon the former C&NW main line. Neenah Foundry Plant 2 & Plant 3 are partially visible in the background at left. Plant 2 opened in 1960 and Plant 3 was built in 1967. Plant 1 opened in 1918 and stood about a mile to the north, until it was closed in 1994 anf eventually demolished.

A Post Office was established on 4 May 1876, originally called Snell’s Station, sometimes referred to as Snell’s Crossing. This once small, rural community included a depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. It does not look like any substantial remnants of the community remain, even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone (it is not a station on the CN system map). UP 6771
Title:  UP 6771
Description:  A coal train clears Stroebe Rd. as it heads northeast via CN, former C&NW, rails at Stroebe, WI on 16 Jul. '17. The coal was destined for Wisconsin Public Service's Pulliam Power Plant, a.k.a. J. P. Pulliam Generating Station, at Green Bay, WI. Train had three locomotives, UP 6804 and UP 7246 pulling as well as UP 6771 pushing. The former SOO main line, also in use by CN, is visible in the foreground. Title:  UP 6804, UP 7246, UP 6771
Description:  An empty coal train approaches E. Snell Rd. as it heads southwest via CN, former SOO, rails at Oshkosh, WI on 22 Jul. '17. Train had 3 locomotives, UP 6804, UP 7246, UP 6771. Train was likely returning from Wisconsin Public Service's Pulliam Power Plant, a.k.a. J. P. Pulliam Generating Station, at Green Bay, WI. I captured the same trio of locomotives hauling a northbound loaded coal train at Stroebe, WI on 16 Jul. I was surprised to notice that all three locomotives must have been turned on a wye at some point, all three were cab forward heading north and now they are all cab forward heading south. I was standing at what used to be the former C&NW grade crossing. The border between the City of Oshkosh and the Town of Oshkosh is quite convoluted in this area. The land to the left of the active rails in front of me and the land on both sides of the active rails behind me is the Town of Oshkosh, but the land to the right of the active rails in front of me is the City of Oshkosh. Go about 400' behind me and the land on both sides of the active rails is the City of Oshkosh.

UP 6779 and BNSF 7992
Title:  UP 6779 and BNSF 7992
Description:  A through freight parallels Ehlers Rd. and approaches Towmen Rd. as it heads northeast via CN, former SOO, rails at Shawano Junction, Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016) on 27 Mar. '21. The train is transitioning to the former C&NW rails. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. To the right, a shiny, new, modern signal relay case stands where an awesome, old one once stood. To the right of that you can see some brand new signals. The installation commenced ca. 25 Apr. '20 and was completed ca. 3 Jul. '20. The new signals were activated and the old signals removed between 10 and 22 Aug. '21. The telephone pole to the left of center and the one to the left of the lead locomotive stand next to an abandoned portion of the C&NW right-of-way. It sure was nice of the railroad to complete some much-needed brush clearing along the tracks here so that train nuts like me can capture better views of their trains.

Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI until 14 Apr. '16 (not Outagamie Co., where Stroebe was erroneously placed on this site)). The train rests amid the ongoing reconstruction of the Hwy. 41/Hwy. 441 (a.k.a. the Tri-County Expressway)/Hwy. 10 interchange (a.k.a. the Polish Connection). The overpass in the background is the connection from westbound Hwy. 10/Hwy. 441 (a.k.a. the Tri-County Expressway) to northbound Hwy. 41. The columns partially visible at left support the new, second bridge to carry eastbound traffic over Little Lake Butte des Morts. The columns partially visible at right support the original Roland Kampo Bridge (being extensively rebuilt) which will now only carry westbound traffic over Little Lake Butte des Morts. The interchange opened to traffic on 30 Nov. '75. When Hwy. 10 was reconstructed and relocated ca. '97, this interchange was not simultaneously reconstructed to form a full interchange, but the ongoing, extensive expansion and reconstruction will make it a full interchange as well as increase traffic capacity.
