CN 9626 and IC 3101
Description:
A CN local crosses Mud Creek via the former C&NW bridge as it heads northeast at Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016) on 12 Feb. '23. A pier for the former SOO timber trestle bridge can be seen beyond this bridge.

IC 3101
Description:
A CN train crosses Clayton Ave. (and crosses the border from Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI, to the Town of Clayton, Winnebago Co., WI) as it heads west along former SOO rails at Town of Clayton, Winnebago Co., WI, on 26 Feb. '23. Fox Crossing, WI, was formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016. I was thrilled to see a caboose in the consist. Sorry, but I will not willingly utter the phrase "shoving platform" to describe a piece of rolling stock which is obviously a caboose. WC 15 is the former AC 9602, although one reference claims it was AC 9606.

IC 3102 and CN 4705
Description:
CN local slows to stop at the siding on former C&NW rails in Little Chute, WI on 9 Jun. '14. Crew had just finished servicing Nestlé Pizza Division, originally Jack's Pizza, and stopped here to rearrange a few cars in order to service the Little Chute industrial park one mile to the east. Train would then service Thilmany Pulp and Paper mill in Kaukauna before heading back to Neenah. Normally they service the Little Chute industrial park after Kaukauna, due to the orientation of the turnout, but today they did it differently. The industry on the left is Crystal Print, Inc., which receives periodic rail service.

IC 3102 and CN 9455
Description:
CN local crosses the Fox River via former C&NW bridge in the Flats at Appleton, WI on 27 Jul. '15. It looks like a solitary railroad bridge from a distance, but there are actually two bridges a few feet apart. The second, nearer, one is the former MILW bridge, now sans rails. Part of the Oneida Skyline Bridge helps to frame the scene. Local was headed back to the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction after servicing eastern Appleton, Kimberly and Combined Locks.

The masonry depot was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. Local had two locomotives, IC 3102 and IC 3115. Through freight had two locomotives, CN 5640, CN 2562.

IC 3102
Description:
CN local pauses at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 10 Jun. '17. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, the corporate overlords didn’t want to spend any money to update the plant. It stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished. Part of the fence on this side of the tracks has been temporarily removed, they were preparing to replace some of the turnouts on this end of the yard.

IC 3102
Description:
A CN local crosses the Fox River Navigation Canal via the former C&NW swing bridge in 'The Flats' at Appleton, WI on 16 Jun. '18. Train was headed back to the yard at Appleton Junction after working Kimberly and Combined Locks and had one locomotive, IC 3102. I haven't noticed a builder's plate, but according to bridgehunter.com, the Warren through truss swing bridge was built in 1908. You can't tell from this angle, but the train also crosses the Newberry Trail as it approaches the southeast end of the bridge. The turnout at lower right is used to service Neenah Paper (formerly Fox River Paper Co.). Neenah Paper is the only current rail customer in 'The Flats' and has been for a number of years. Over the past several years, I have notice that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Flats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some variation of same. However, the historic, industrial heart of Appleton is simply ‘The Flats.’

IC 3102
Description:
A CN local crosses S. Lawe St. and parallels the last remaining scrap of what was once the South Channel of the Fox River via former C&NW rails in 'The Flats' at Appleton, WI on 16 Jun. '18. Train was headed back to the yard at Appleton Junction after working Kimberly and Combined Locks and had one locomotive, IC 3102. South Island St. used to run parallel to the north bank of the South Channel. Old maps reveal that the west end of the South Channel was filled in at some point between 1916 and 1957. Most of the remainder of the South Channel was filled in the following years. This remaining portion forms the confluence with a mill race which connects West’s Power Canal (a.k.a. West’s Canal, a.k.a. Grand Chute Island Canal) to the Fox River. Edward West bought Grand Chute Island and excavated the canal in 1870 to provide water power for the industries which were built soon after. Neenah Paper (formerly Fox River Paper Co.), is partially visible in the background to the left. Neenah Paper is the only current rail customer in 'The Flats' and has been for a number of years. Over the past several years, I have notice that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Flats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some variation of same. CN 4721 and IC 3102
Description:
A CN slows to halt under the nearly completed reconstruction of the Hwy. 41/Hwy. 10/Hwy. 441 (a.k.a. Tri-County Expressway) interchange (a.k.a. the Polish Connection) as it parallels W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd. via former C&NW rails at Stroebe, WI on 30 Jun. '18. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI until 14 Apr. '16 (not Outagamie Co., where Stroebe was erroneously placed on this site)). The interchange opened to traffic on 30 Nov. '75. When Hwy. 10 was reconstructed and relocated ca. '97, this interchange was not simultaneously reconstructed to form a full interchange, but the ongoing, extensive expansion and reconstruction will make it a full interchange as well as increase traffic capacity. The former SOO rails, also in use by CN, can be seen at left. W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd. (background) becomes N. Lake St. (foreground) underneath the Polish Connection. Modern maps tend to omit the W. for some reason, it is also absent on the current street sign. Some old maps include the W., some old maps omit the W. Train was headed back to Neenah after working Little Chute and Kaukauna.

Description:
A CN local parallels Hwy. MM as it prepares to switch the Shawano Paper Mill (div. of Little Rapids Corp.), W7575 Poplar Rd., Shawano, WI, 54166 (physically located in Town of Richmond) via former C&NW rails at West Shawano, Town of Richmond, Shawano Co., WI, on 19 Sep. '20. Founded as the Wolf River Paper & Fiber Co. on 7 Feb. 1894, the name was changed to Shawano Paper Mills ca. Nov. ‘49. The facility was leased to Little Rapids Pulp Co. (later Little Rapids Corp.) in Feb. ’50, they purchased the facility on 25 Jun. ’55. The name changed to Little Rapids Corp.-Shawano Mill in ‘93, but it is still commonly referred to as Shawano Paper Mill. The area around the mill, which includes some former company houses, used to be referred to as West Shawano. It was labelled as such in the '11 county atlas (Upham & Russell Cos. Plat and Riverview Addition), the '20 township map, and the name still appears on some official property records. The paper mill stands along an approximately 2-mile scrap of the former C&NW mainline which once ran 83 miles from Green Bay to Wausau (this is the only active remnant outside of those two cities). That former main line is now the Mountain-Bay State Trail. It is an awesome bicycle ride, but I (obviously) would prefer to see trains running on it. The fence in the background surrounds the paper mill's water treatment facility, which was built upon the former site of the Shawano Brick Yard (a.k.a. Larson Brick Yard). The brick yard (owned by Charles Larson, and later his son Thomas, for most, if not all, of its existence) produced fine white or cream colored brick from 1891 until 1946. The large facility contained three kilns and its own narrow gauge railway. The paper mill purchased the property at some point after the brick yard closed and eventually demolished the entire facility, to include the Larson mansion. The paper mill's historic office building was constructed in 1901 of brick from that yard.

Description:
A CN local parallels Lush St. and crosses Kaukauna St. as it heads northeast via the former joint MILW/SOO rails at Menasha, WI, on 2 Oct. '20. The locomotive will momentarily foul Kaukauna St. while a crew member opens the railroad swing bridge over the Fox River Navigation Canal to permit marine traffic. This grade crossing used to include Lush St. and Chute St., but those streets have been reconfigured. The defunct Menasha Municipal Utility plant, purchased by Simply Incredible Foods in Jun. '14, dominates the horizon to the left. The former Noffke Lumber facility is partially visible to the right. It still has a spur, but the turnout for it was removed years ago.

IC 3107
Description:
CN local approaches the former N. Superior St. grade crossing as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 20 Nov. '16. The building behind the train is the former Furnishings Unlimited warehouse, 323 N. Division St. I don't think they were the original occupant of the building, but they were there for quite a few years. The facility used to receive rail service, but it hasn't for quite some time. The 1911 Sanborn map depicts three businesses occupying the approximate foot print of the current building, an agricultural implement warehouse, a furniture warehouse, and a stock yard. Train was headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna.
