CN 2259 and CN 2175
Title:  CN 2259 and CN 2175
Description:  A CN container train passes the Main St. overpass and traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 4 Apr. '20. The white building partially visible at left is, or was, Progressive Paper Storage, Inc. (formerly Kimberly-Clark Warehouse (K-C Warehouse)), 135 Millview Dr. It does not receive rail service, but it looks like there may have been a spur on the northwest side of the building in the past. First Presbyterian Church, 200 S. Church St., can be seen above the warehouse. The clock tower of the once impressive 1888 city hall building, intersection of S. Commercial St. and W. Doty St., looks like a church steeple from this perspective, but it is a block east of the church.

CN 2194 and IC 1037 at C&NW/CN Oshkosh, WI Yard Office
Title:  CN 2194 and IC 1037 at C&NW/CN Oshkosh, WI Yard Office
Description:  A northbound CN through freight approaches the yard office at the unusually empty former C&NW yard at Oshkosh, WI on 10 Feb. '16. Normally this view of the facility is blocked by the cars in the yard. I've never seen this yard completely empty. The taller building to the right, north, of the yard office sits at the approximate location of the C&NW's South Oshkosh depot, a smaller, plainer structure than their once ornate Oshkosh depot which still stands less than a mile to the north. Historically, everything south of the Fox River was once known as South Oshkosh. The C&NW South Oshkosh depot was saved from demolition, but its current fate is unknown to me. I have seen post-relocation photographs of it on the internet, but they do not reveal its precise location. Some references state it was moved to downtown Oshkosh, others state it was moved to a park in Oshkosh. If it still survives, I have not found it yet.

There had been no cars spotted here since at least 31 Jan. '16. They did leave the passing siding and team track. The new bascule bridge over the Fox River is visible at right, it was completed in Aug. '13 to replace the 1899 swing bridge.

Description:  CN through freight slowly enters the S-curve at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 8 Jan. '15. After a brief stopover here, the train would continue on toward Green Bay. The remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot are behind the locomotives. There are rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties stacked upon it. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened.

Description:  A trio of interesting out-of-towners lead a through freight approaching S. Perkins St. while headed northeast through the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 8 Apr. '18. Train had three locomotives, NS 8077, GECX 7328, NS 1115. Until recently, the building at right had a sign denoting its use by All About Packaging, Inc., Warehouse #2. There is a spur along the south side of the building, the wheel stops can be seen if you zoom in, but the turnout for the spur was removed years ago. The oldest part of the building was completed in Mar. '60, the new facility for the Fox Valley Sheltered Workshop. Inc. (started in '55 to create employment opportunities for the disabled). It became Valley Packaging Industries Inc. ca. mid- or late-'80s. After they moved to a new facility, this one has been home to Valley Planing Mill, Inc., followed by Perfect Patterns, Inc. The All About Packaging, Inc., main facility is a couple of blocks away on W. Everett St.

Description:  A CN through freight crosses Medina Junction Rd. (out-of-frame to right) and passes the Rat River Wildlife Area as it heads southeast via former SOO rails at Medina Junction, WI on 9 Jun. '18. It looks like there was a fire here earlier this spring, otherwise last year’s cattails and marsh grass would partially obscure the train. This scene looks odd without the interesting, old telephone poles that stood along the far side of the tracks for 146 years, until they were removed between 4 and 18 Sep. '17.

Title:  CN 2035 and GECX 7366
Description:  A CN through freight approaches Hwy. M as it heads southeast via former SOO rails at Medina Station, Town of Dale, Outagamie Co., WI on 8 Oct. '18. The WC built a depot here somewhere between 1871, when the line was laid, and 1889, when I recently found it depicted on a map. The site was labeled as Medina Station on maps until at least 1915. The depot stood approximately where the CN microwave tower now stands, at right.

Description:  A CN through freight passes the former Sherry St. grade crossing as it heads north at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI hours on 23 Dec. '18. The 1902 Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility, 434 Sherry St., and 1892 Murer House, 432 Sherry St., are partially visible beyond the 3rd locomotive. The WC (later SOO) depot stood on the opposite side of Sherry St. from those two buildings; it was built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest. The Main St. overpass can be seen in the background at left. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St. used to be the yard. I don't know when the current yard was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard here.

Eggers Industries, an active rail customer, is in the background. Founded at Neenah, WI, in 1910 as Hardwood Products Co., construction of the facility commenced in Oct. ’10. It was renamed Hardwood Products Corp. as a result of a merger with Mississippi Veneer & Lumber Co. on 20 Apr. ’22 (the latter company was formed by the same businessmen who founded the Neenah company). Eggers Industries acquired Hardwood Products Corp. in 1965 and renamed it Eggers Hardwood Products Corp. Eggers was founded by Fred W. Eggers at Two Rivers, WI in 1884 to make wood baskets used by farmers. They later started making plywood and other wood veneer products. There used to be 3 spurs to service the facility, now there is only 1.

Description:  An interesting and colorful mix of locomotives, from four different Class I's, lead a heavily powered CN through freight northeast along Harrison St. past the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 26 Jul. '18. Train had six locomotives, CSX 3317, CSX 420, BNSF 5272, CN 5451, UP 8773, CSX 7828. The W. Cecil St. overpass (Timothy Hamblin Bridge) bisects the scene. It was erected to replace the grade crossing and opened to traffic on 20 Nov. '07. I didn't notice it when I was capturing the photograph (I noticed it later while zooming in to identify the road numbers), but there is a trespasser dressed in blue standing to the left of the bridge pier at right.
