CN 3036, et al.
Title:  CN 3036, et al.
Description:  A CN through freight passes the southern Sherman Rd. grade crossing and approaches E. Sunnyview Rd./Hwy. Y as it heads southwest via former SOO rails at Town of Oshkosh, Winnebago Co., WI, on 9 Jun. '19. The CN microwave tower in the background at right also stands at the southern Sherman Rd. grade crossing; it stands between the former SOO main line and the former C&NW right-of-way, which runs parallel on the other side of the tree line at right. I'm left to ponder the reason for the unusual jog at the north end of this passing siding. Train had two locomotives, CN 3036 and GECX 2038.

Title:  CN 3037, CREX 1519, et al.
Description:  A CN through freight crosses N. Lake St. as it heads southeast via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 15 Dec. '18. At left, a very enthusiastic, young railfan (with his parent or guardian) records the train with his cellular telephone. Just out-of-frame to the left, a unit train of bi-level autoracks waits to head northwest. Eggers Industries, 164 N. Lake St., an active rail customer, is partially visible at right. Founded at Neenah, WI, in 1910 as Hardwood Products Co., construction of the facility commenced in Oct. ’10. It was renamed Hardwood Products Corp. as a result of a merger with Mississippi Veneer & Lumber Co. on 20 Apr. ’22 (the latter company was formed by the same businessmen who founded the Neenah company). Eggers Industries acquired Hardwood Products Corp. in 1965 and renamed it Eggers Hardwood Products Corp. Eggers was founded by Fred W. Eggers at Two Rivers, WI in 1884 to make wood baskets used by farmers. They later started making plywood and other wood veneer products. There used to be 3 spurs to service the facility, now there is only 1. Train had three locomotives, CN 3037 and CREX 1519 pulling and CN 2934 mid-train.

CN 3040, et al.
Title:  CN 3040, et al.
Description:  A CN container/autorack train parallels Broad St., passes the former C&NW depot, and approaches Washington Ave. as it heads south with 119 container cars and 24 autoracks at Oshkosh, WI, on 6 Sep. '21. Built by the Chicago firm of Clark & Fuller in 1884 at a cost $15,000, the depot opened on 1 Dec. 1884. The depot was more ornate when completed, some of its interesting architectural elements have been removed over the years. The last passenger train, the Peninsula “400,” departed on 31 Jun. ’71. The depot is currently used by Clarity Care. I used to think that this depot replaced the older MLS&W depot which stood at Warren St. and Jay St. (both streets no longer exist but the site was southwest of the intersection of Pearl Ave. and Jackson St.), because the MLS&W was a subsidiary of the C&NW. I recently learned that both roads operated independently in Oshkosh until at least 1893, when the MLS&W was completely absorbed by the C&NW. In fact, the MLS&W also built a new stone depot in Oshkosh in 1894, to replace their older, wooden depot. Some references state, erroneously, that this depot replaced the C&NW's South Oshkosh depot. However, the C&NW operated both depots for years after this one was completed.

Description:  A CN unit train of tank cars passes Arrowhead Park and approaches the Main St. overpass as it traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 23 Dec. '18. Train had three locomotives, CN 3041 and UP 5421 pulling as well as CN 3084 pushing. The historic Neenah Stove Works, currently occupied by Hafemeister Machine Corp., 635 Main St., and International Children's Fund, 619 Main St., is partially visible in the background. The oldest part of the facility dates to 1857, when the Moore & Wells foundry was established. The north leg of the wye is also visible.

Train had three locomotives, CN 3041 and UP 5421 pulling as well as CN 3084 pushing. The north leg of the wye can be seen in the foreground. The front facade of the remaining portion of the Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility, 434 Sherry St., is visible under the overpass, beyond the bridge pier. It was built in 1902 after the original building, constructed by Nicholas Simon in 1892, was destroyed in a fire. The WC (later SOO) depot stood on this side of that facility; it was built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye (just out-of-frame to the right). The Winneconne Ave. overpass can be seen in the background.

Description:  A CN through freight, with a string of flatcars loaded with MoW equipment, passes the Main St. overpass and leans into the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 11 May '19. Train was slowing in order to prepare to set out and pick up cars and had two locomotives, CN 3041 and EMDX 1606. The north leg of the wye is partially visible at left. The remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot can be seen near the center of the photograph. The rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties rest atop the remnants of the foundation. The masonry depot was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. The Edward Smith Octagon House, 347 Smith St., is partially visible under the overpass at right. The house was erected between 1851 and 1854. Edward Smith, who operated a flour mill and had an early interest in the Neenah Paper Co., purchased the home in 1855. It has been owned by the Neenah Historical Society since 1993.

CN 3041 and EMDX 1606
Title:  CN 3041 and EMDX 1606
Description:  A CN through freight, with a string of flatcars loaded with MoW equipment, passes the station sign as it heads northeast via former SOO rails at Shawano Junction, Fox Crossing (originally Town of Menasha until 14 Apr. '16), Winnebago Co., WI on 11 May '19. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. The locomotives are about to pass that turnout and transition to the former C&NW rails to head for Green Bay, WI. It sure was nice of the railroad to complete some much-needed brush clearing along the tracks here so that train nuts like me can capture better views of their trains. Unfortunately, it also reveals the garbage dumped here illegally by lazy, stupid, inconsiderate 21st Century Americans, like the stack of tires at left or the TVs near the signal relay case. The telephone pole in the background at left stands along the former C&NW right-of-way.

Description:  A CN through freight traverses the west leg of the wye as it heads northwest via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI, on 23 May '20. On the far side of the train lies Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye, which bisects the scene. The foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot is partially visible to the right. The white building partially visible at left is, or was, Progressive Paper Storage, Inc. (formerly Kimberly-Clark Warehouse (K-C Warehouse)), 135 Millview Dr. It does not receive rail service, but it looks like there may have been a spur on the northwest side of the building in the past. First Presbyterian Church, 200 S. Church St., can be seen above the cab of the lead locomotive. The clock tower of the once impressive 1888 city hall building, intersection of S. Commercial St. and W. Doty St., looks like a church steeple from this perspective, but it is a block east of the church.

Title:  CN 2884 and CN 3045
Description:  CN container train parallels Hwy. 41 as it speeds northeast via former SOO rails at Snells, WI on 28 May '16. Snells is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. A Post Office was established 4 May 1876, originally called Snell’s Station, sometimes referred to as Snell’s Crossing. This small, rural community once included a depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. Snells was located at Mile 183 on the SOO’s Trevor to Somerset line and Mile 173.1 on the C&NW’s Milwaukee to Marinette line. It does not look like any real remnants of the original community remain. Even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone.

Title:  UP 5466, CN 3046, GTW 4619, et al.
Description:  A CN through freight parallels Union St. and passes the former Sherry St. grade crossing at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 29 Aug. '20. Train had four locomotives, CN 3192, UP 5466, CN 3046, GTW 4619. The historic Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility, 434 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond the locomotives. It was built in 1902 after the original 1892 building was destroyed by fire and is currently used for storage. The historic Murer House, 432 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond that. It was built by Felix Murer in 1892 and is currently home to Sherry Town Station. The WC (later SOO) depot stood on the opposite side of Sherry St. from those two buildings; it was built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest. The Main St. overpass is partially visible in the background to the left. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here.

CN 3047
Title:  CN 3047
Description:  A CN container train passes the Hwy. 41 overpass and approaches Ehlers Rd. as it heads southeast via former SOO rails at Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016) on 26 Jan. '20. Train had two locomotives CN 3222 pulling and CN 3047 mid-train. The first highway bridge over the then SOO railroad tracks there was built when Hwy. 41 was relocated to what was then the rural outskirts of the Fox Cities. The project commenced in the late-1930s and continued into the 1940s. The relocation allowed for expansion to a 4-lane highway (‘superhighway’ or ‘belt line’), as well as bypassing the congestion of the downtowns of Neenah, Menasha, and Appleton. On 18 Apr. ’36, the State Highway Commission of Wis. authorized “construction of an overhead bridge in Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., on the proposed route of U.S. Highway 41.” The overpass project was referred to as the Neenah Belt Line Overhead. Green Bay Rd. can be seen at left.
