GTW 4616 and IC 3138
Description:
A CN local crosses N. Lake St. as it heads northwest via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 18 May '19. Eggers Div. of VT Industries, 164 N. Lake St., an active rail customer, is partially visible at right. Founded at Neenah, WI, in 1910 as Hardwood Products Co., construction of the facility commenced in Oct. ’10. It was renamed Hardwood Products Corp. as a result of a merger with Mississippi Veneer & Lumber Co. on 20 Apr. ’22 (the latter company was formed by the same businessmen who founded the Neenah company). Eggers Industries acquired Hardwood Products Corp. in 1965 and renamed it Eggers Hardwood Products Corp. Eggers was founded by Fred W. Eggers at Two Rivers, WI in 1884 to make wood baskets used by farmers. They later started making plywood and other wood veneer products. The name was changed to simply Eggers Industries at some point. It was acquired by Holstein, IA, based VT Industries, Inc., on 2 Oct. ’18. There used to be 3 spurs to service the facility, now there is only 1.

GTW 5825 and GTW 4616
Description:
GTW 5825 and GTW 4616 rest at the north end of the CN, former SOO, yard at Neenah, WI, on 26 Mar. '21. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994; it stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished.

CN 3244, CN 3160 and GTW 4619
Description:
A CN through freight parallels Union St. and passes the former Sherry St. grade crossing at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 8 Mar. '20. The historic Murer House, 432 Sherry St., is partially above the second locomotive. It was built by Felix Murer in 1892 and is currently home to Sherry Town Station. The WC (later SOO) depot stood on the opposite side of Sherry St. from that building; it was built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here.

Description:
A CN local and through freight meet along Union St. at the former Caroline St. grade crossing at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 29 Aug. '20. Local had one locomotive, IC 9568, with some unique, expedient hand-stenciling. Through freight had four locomotives, CN 3192, UP 5466, CN 3046, GTW 4619. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built. A 1909 map shows the yard still here, a 1936 map depicts both the old and new yards.

GTW 4620
Description:
CN local heads northwest over former MILW rails as it passes through what used to be the industrial heart of Chilton, WI on 11 Dec. '13. The early village was originally named Stantonville, in honor of Moses Stanton, founder. The land was purchased by John Marygold in 1852 and he changed the name to Chilington, his hometown in England. He sent a request to the county seat, then Stockbridge, to make the name change official. A miscommunication resulted in the middle syllable being lost to history and the name became Chilton.

IC 3138 and GTW 4620
Description:
CN local halted at Millview Dr. as it waits to enter the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 1 Feb. '14. Train was likely returning from Manitowoc. Until a few years ago, a train stopped here would have been hidden behind the Glatfelter Paper mill (formerly Bergstrom Paper, originally Winnebago Paper), which stood for well over a century (the oldest part of the original mill was constructed in 1874). The lead locomotive is parked under the remnants of the steam pipes that used to connect the paper mill to the now defunct Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant).

Title:
IC 9602 and GTW 4620
Description:
CN local passes L. C. Siding enroute to service Appleton Coated paper mill via former C&NW rails in Combined Locks, WI on 18 Feb. '14. I have long thought the station sign is wrong, but I haven’t found definitive proof yet. I presume that L. C. is short for Little Chute, which is on the opposite side of the river. Seems like the sign should be C. L. Siding, for Combined Locks. Does anyone have an old C&NW timetable handy?

Description:
CN local assembles its train of 34 cars at the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 15 May '16. I believe they were preparing to head toward Manitowoc, WI. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, the owners didn’t want to spend any money to update the plant. It stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished.

Description:
CN local parallels 4th St. and approaches De Pere St. (the current street signs have been lazily bastardized to Depere St.) as it traverses the former SOO yard at Menasha, WI with 34 cars on 15 May '16. I believe they were headed for Manitowoc, WI. The sun's location was less-than-ideal, but I wanted to capture a train with 3 locomotives in this yard because it doesn't seem to happen very often.

GTW 4623
Description:
GTW 4623 crosses W. 2nd St. while working the CN, former C&NW, yard at Appleton Junction, WI, on 25 Sep. '20. Carter's Caboose, 1428 W. 2nd St., a small, old, rail side tavern, is partially visible to the right. It dates to at least 1887, when it was a grocery store operated by Peter Leininger. By 1901 it was a sample room operated by John Sigl. By ‘30 it was a soft drink establishment owned by Hubert J. Merkel and August F. Brandt (Prohibition was still in effect). By ’36 it was a tavern operated by Albert Giesen, owned by Mrs. Gretchen Merkel. By ’38 it was Bob’s Tavern, still owned by Mrs. Merkel. It was the Junction Tavern from at least ’43-’71, still owned by Mrs. Merkel until at least ’60 (there were at least two different owners between ’67-’71). At some point in the ‘70s it became Pete’s Junction (possibly Palomino Pete’s Junction). It was called Netticoat Junction ca. the ‘90s (owned by Joanne M. ‘Nettie’ Nett). I haven’t learned how long it has been Carter’s Caboose. The former Appleton Wood Products Co. factory, now part of the Miller Electric facility, is partially visible beyond that. Built in 1916, the walls include some nice, decorative brickwork (including cast or carved keystones depicting bowling pins above the windows), which Miller obscured with cheap metal siding at some point after they bought it ca. 1975.
