GTW 4912 and GTW 5846
Description:
A CN local parallels Ehlers Rd. and approaches Towmen Rd. as it heads northeast at Shawano Junction, WI, on 2 Apr. '22. Local was headed for Appleton, Little Chute and Kaukauna. The local is transitioning from the former SOO rails to the former C&NW rails. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails.

Description:
A CN local, with a friendly engineer, emerges from behind the now idled Clearwater Paper as it heads northwest via former SOO rails at Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016) on 10 Apr. '22. The local was headed for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna. Clearwater Paper Corp., historically Kimberly-Clark’s Lakeview mill, 249 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI (physically located in Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016)), closed the mill in Jul. '21. It was purchased by KK Integrated Logistics ca. 12 Jan. '22. A new tenant is supposed to be moving into this portion of facility this month. I'm not sure who owns or occupies the blue building to the right, which used to receive rail service but hasn't for some time.

Description:
Appleton, WI A CN local pauses in front of the depot/yard office at the FV&LS (or FOXY), former C&NW, yard at Appleton Junction, WI, on 17 Apr. '22. Local was setting out cars before continuing on to Little Chute and Kaukauna. There used to be a diamond right about where the rear truck of the lead locomotive rests, from ca. 1874 until at least 1968, where the MLS&W crossed the C&NW. When the MLS&W was absorbed by the C&NW on 1 Sep. 1893, their line became the Ashland Div. of the C&NW. The white building partially visible to the left is the former home of the Harry H. Long Moving and Storage Co., 1001 S. Douglas St. This building dates to at least 1953, when it was listed in the local directory (it was not listed in ’51). The building has a spur, but it hasn’t been used for quite a while (except for occasional MoW equipment). Now called Harry H. Long Moving Storage & Express, Inc., the company, founded in 1917, is still family owned. It moved to a larger facility in Town of Clayton, Winnebago Co., WI in 2001.

Description:
A CN local crosses W. 2nd St. as it departs the FV&LS (or FOXY), former C&NW, yard at Appleton Junction, WI, on 17 Apr. '22. Local set out cars before continuing on to Little Chute and Kaukauna. Carter's Caboose, 1428 W. 2nd St., a small, old, rail side tavern, is partially visible to the right. It dates to at least 1887, when it was a grocery store operated by Peter Leininger. By 1901 it was a sample room (saloon) operated by John Sigl. By ‘30 it was a soft drink establishment owned by Hubert J. Merkel and August F. Brandt (Prohibition was still in effect). By ’36 it was a tavern operated by Albert Giesen, owned by Mrs. Gretchen Merkel. By ’38 it was Bob’s Tavern, still owned by Mrs. Merkel. It was the Junction Tavern from at least ’43-’71, still owned by Mrs. Merkel until at least ’60 (there were at least two different owners between ’67-’71). At some point in the ‘70s it became Pete’s Junction (possibly Palomino Pete’s Junction). It was called Netticoat Junction ca. the ‘90s (owned by Joanne M. ‘Nettie’ Nett). I haven’t learned how long it has been Carter’s Caboose. The former Appleton Wood Products Co. factory, now part of the Miller Electric facility, is partially visible beyond that. Built in 1916, the walls include some nice, decorative brickwork (including cast or carved keystones depicting bowling pins above the windows), which Miller obscured with cheap metal siding at some point after they bought it ca. 1975.

Description:
A CN local crosses S. Mason St. while headed northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI, on 17 Apr. '22. Local was headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna. I haven't learned why one side of the bridge is lower than the other, but I have discovered why one side is wider than the other. An old photograph reveals that the right (northbound) lane of S. Mason St. once accommodated a streetcar track and a lane for motor vehicle traffic simultaneously. You can also see that the bridge abutments and piers were designed to support two tracks, but I don't believe this area was ever double-tracked.

Description:
A CN local passes the former C&NW depot at Kaukauna, WI, on 17 Apr. '22. The depot was built in 1947 at the intersection of Depot St. and Draper St., to replace the old, wooden depot. Designed in the Art Moderne style, it originally had flat roofs. The current, gabled roofs were added at some point after 1983. It was once known as the north side depot, as opposed to the MLS&W south side depot. That large, ornate depot disappeared many years ago. I couldn't shoot through the fence at this angle, so I had to hold my camera above the fence and spray and pray.

GTW 4914
Description:
CN local shoves past the Whiting Paper Co., 100 River St., Menasha, WI, on 28 Mar. '14. It was preparing to head back to the former SOO yard in Neenah after servicing several industries in the Twin Cities of Menasha and Neenah. Originally the Whiting and Gilbert Paper mill, it was built along the canal on the site of an abandoned dry dock in 1882 (1881). It became the George A. Whiting Paper Mills in 1886, after he bought out the Gilbert brothers (who then founded a new paper company with their father and another brother). The name was changed to George A. Whiting Paper Co. in 1911. Much of the current facility was built after a devastating fire and explosion on 24 Aug. 1888. The 5th generation of the Whiting family sold the company to an employee in Mar. '14. The name was changed to Whiting Paper Co. The mill produced matte board, scrapbooking paper, high-end art paper, and its unique Kona Paper, made from recycled burlap coffee bean bags. The paper machines were shut down on 30 Mar. '16, after 134 years of providing quality paper products. When the closure was announced, it was claimed the company could not maintain the sales volume needed to remain profitable, which seems to be the catch phrase of every 21st Century American corporation when they shut down any historic industrial facility.

Description:
A CN local approaches Hwy. O as it heads south via former SOO rails at Mackville Station, Town of Center, Outagamie Co., WI on 22 May ’14. Listed as Mackville Station on some old maps, distinguishing it from the community of Mackville which is 1-mile due east of here, it is listed as Mackville on some time tables. Some remnants of the depot’s foundation can be seen to the right of the base of the station sign. The station sign was stolen between 13 Jun. and 9 Jul. ’14, not long after I posted a photograph of it on this site. I presume it was stolen; I would think if the railroad had removed the sign they would have removed the posts as well. Both posts stood barren for quite a while. One of the posts still stands next to the track (as of Oct. ‘18), the other lies on the ground. Remnants of the former passing siding can be seen at right, it has been truncated at Hwy. O. What remains forms a spur which could be used to service Stainless Tubular Products (STP), partially visible to the right. It doesn’t appear to receive regular rail service at the moment. I do not know the history of the cool, old barn-like structure in the background, but it has a loading dock extending to the spur. Train was headed back to Neenah after working Shawano.

GTW 4914
Description:
A CN train passes the FV&LS (or FOXY), former CN, originally C&NW, depot after setting out cars at the yard at Appleton Junction, WI, on 29 Dec. '24. Train was headed for Kaukauna. There used to be a diamond right about where the locomotive is, from ca. 1874 until at least 1968, where the MLS&W crossed the C&NW. When the MLS&W was absorbed by the C&NW on 1 Sep. 1893, their line became the Ashland Div. of the C&NW. The white building partially visible in the background is the former home of the Harry H. Long Moving and Storage Co., 1001 S. Douglas St. This building dates to at least 1953, when it was listed in the local directory (it was not listed in ’51). The building has a spur, but it hasn’t been used for quite a while (except for occasional MoW equipment). They moved to a larger facility in Town of Clayton, Winnebago Co., WI in 2001.

GTW 4917
Description:
A CN train, with a friendly engineer, passes the former C&NW depot as it hauls 6 cars northeast at Green Bay, WI, on 9 Jul. '22. The depot, designed by Charles Sumner Frost, was built in the Italian Renaissance Revival style and completed in 1899. Passenger train service ceased in 1971 but it was still used by the railroad for years. From 1996 until 2021, it was home to Titletown Brewing Co. When they moved to larger quarters in one of the neighboring former cannery buildings, a new restaurant moved in. The depot is also a stop on the Green Bay Packers' Heritage Trail. On the right is PPCX 800239, formerly AMTK 3222 'Palm Beach', formerly SCL 6602, formerly SAL 15. The 6-bedroom lounge car was built by American Car and Foundry Corp. in 1949 and ran on SAL/SCL between NY and FL for many years. AMTK spent $150,000 on repairs and remodeling after a wreck in 1974, but discontinued it from service in 1977. It was purchased from Amtrak by a private owner in 1978. He reconfigured the interior to 5 bedrooms, bar-lounge, and kitchenette. The restoration of the sleeper-lounge car was done well enough that it qualified to be pulled by AMTK trains. Not sure how long he owned it or who owns it now.

Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016 (not Outagamie Co., where Stroebe was erroneously placed on this site)). The former SOO rails, also in use by CN, run parallel in the background. The Great Northern Corp. facility is partially visible in the background. They have a spur, but have not received rail service for quite a while. The turnout connecting their spur to the main line was torn out last year.

This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails.
