CN 3290 and CN 3132
Description:
A CN train parallels Harrison St. and passes the W. Cecil St. overpass (Timothy Hamblin Bridge) as it heads southwest past the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 26 Feb. '25. Train had three locomotives, CN 3290 and CN 3132 pulling and CN 3829 mid-train. A remnant of the former C&NW main line, now relegated to a spur, also in use by CN, runs parallel on the other side of the train.

CN 3136 and CN 3875
Description:
A CN through freight parallels Union St., passes the former Caroline St. grade crossing, approaches the former Adams St. grade crossing as it prepares to halt at the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 9 Aug. '20. Train had three locomotives, CN 3136 and CN 3875 pulling as well as CN 3020 mid-train. The Main St. overpass is in the background to the left. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built. A 1909 map shows the yard still here, a 1936 map depicts both the old and new yards.

CN 3140, CN 3819, et al.
Description:
A CN unit train of tank cars crosses the mouth of the Neenah Slough at the south end of Little Lake Butte des Morts as it heads southeast via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 8 Jan. '19. Train had three locomotives, CN 3140 and CN 3819 pulling as well as CN 8940 pushing. Eggers Industries, 164 N. Lake St., an active rail customer, is partially visible above the train at right. The park bench in the foreground at left was conveniently placed here by the City of Neenah to permit rail fans to watch this bridge (I, obviously, doubt that Neenah was thinking of rail fans when they installed this bench. Once in a while, sarcasm gets the best of me). Looking northwest from Arrowhead Park. The pedestrian bridge connects this park to Herb and Dolly Smith Park.

CN 3142
Description:
A CN train approaches Lakeview Dr. as it heads southeast via former C&NW rails at Howard, WI, on 16 Apr. '22. The trailhead of the Mountain-Bay State Trail, where another C&NW line branched off to head toward Wausau, can be seen to the left. Train had two locomotives, CN 3142 pulling and CN 3242 mid-train. This was a target of opportunity, so there was no time to find a position to shoot around the crossing gate.

CN 3149 and CN 3828
Description:
A CN container train approaches the Winneconne Ave. overpass as it heads northeast through the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 29 Mar.'20. Train had two locomotives, CN 3149 and CN 3828. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, the corporate overlords didn’t want to spend any money to update the plant. It stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished. The front door was located just out-of-frame to the right.

Description:
A CN container train crosses the Rat River and bisects the Rat River Wildlife Area as it speeds southeast via former SOO rails at Medina Junction, WI, on 24 Sep. '20. Train had two locomotives, CN 3151 and CN 3848. The locomotives are passing the foundations of the old SOO facilities here. These foundations rest along both sides of the tracks about 700' northwest of the actual junction. If the direction of view in the photograph (http://www.wisconsinhistory.org/Content.aspx?dsNav=N:4294963828-4294963814&dsRecordDetails=R:IM24898) on the Wisconsin Historical Society website is labeled accurately, a coal tower and shed stood on the left side of the tracks and a water tower and another shed to the right. The CN microwave tower in the background stands at the approximate site of where the SOO/WC Medina Station depot once stood on Hwy. M.

A CN through freight parallels Union St. and passes the former Sherry St. grade crossing at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 8 Mar. '20. The historic Murer House, 432 Sherry St., is partially above the second locomotive. It was built by Felix Murer in 1892 and is currently home to Sherry Town Station. The WC (later SOO) depot stood on the opposite side of Sherry St. from that building; it was built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. CN 2859, CN 3201, CN 3179
Description:
A CN through freight parallels Hwy. 41 and passes the Hwy. G overpass as it heads southwest via former SOO rails at Snells, WI on 30 Aug. '19. Snells is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. A Post Office was established on 4 May 1876, originally called Snell’s Station, sometimes referred to as Snell’s Crossing. This once small, rural community included a depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. It does not look like any substantial remnants of the community remain, even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone (it is not a station on the CN system map). Train had three locomotives, CN 2859, CN 3201, CN 3179. A remnant of the former C&NW main line runs parallel along the other side of the train.

A CN unit train of tank cars passes the Main St. overpass and leans into the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 8 Dec. '19. Train had two locomotives, CN 3179 pulling and CN 3168 pushing. The north leg of the wye bisects the scene. The remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot are partially visible at right. The pile of railroad ties rests atop the remnants of the foundation. The masonry depot was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened.

Description:
A CN through freight passes Chapman Ave. and approaches N. Lake St. as it heads southeast via former SOO rails at Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016) on 25 Jan. '20. Train had three locomotives, CN 3189 and CN 2889 pulling as well as CN 2854 mid-train. The boxcars at right rest in a small ancillary yard behind Clearwater Paper Corp., historically Kimberly-Clark’s Lakeview mill, 249 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI (physically located in Fox Crossing, WI), an active rail customer. The Hwy. 41 overpass can be seen in the background. The first highway bridge over the then SOO railroad tracks there was built when Hwy. 41 was relocated to what was then the rural outskirts of the Fox Cities. The project commenced in the late-1930s and continued into the 1940s. The relocation allowed for expansion to a 4-lane highway (‘superhighway’ or ‘belt line’), as well as bypassing the congestion of the downtowns of Neenah, Menasha, and Appleton. On 18 Apr. ’36, the State Highway Commission of Wis. authorized “construction of an overhead bridge in Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., on the proposed route of U.S. Highway 41.” The overpass project was referred to as the Neenah Belt Line Overhead.

Description:
A CN through freight passes the station sign as it heads northeast via former SOO rails at Shawano Junction, Fox Crossing (originally Town of Menasha until 14 Apr. '16), Winnebago Co., WI on 12 May '19. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. The locomotives are about to pass that turnout and transition to the former C&NW rails to head for Green Bay, WI. It sure was nice of the railroad to complete some much-needed brush clearing along the tracks here so that train nuts like me can capture better views of their trains. Unfortunately it also reveals the garbage dumped here illegally by lazy, stupid, inconsiderate 21st Century Americans, like the stack of tires just out-of-frame to the left or the TVs near the signal relay case.
