IC 9605 and CN 9530
Description:
A CN local pulls 19 cars across the mouth of the Neenah Slough at the south end of Little Lake Butte des Morts as it heads southeast via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 2 Oct. '18. It sure was nice of the railroad to complete some much-appreciated brush clearing along the tracks here, so that train nuts like me can capture better views of their trains.

Description:
A CN local crosses the Embarrass River via the former GB&W bridge at New London, WI on 3 Feb. '19. I did not spot a builder's plate, but according to bridgehunter.com, this steel stringer bridge was built by Wisconsin Bridge & Iron Co., Milwaukee, WI, in 1915.

IC 3120 and IC 9605
Description:
The local power rests in front of the depot/yard office at the CN, former C&NW, yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 22 Mar. '19. I was excited to see a pair of Geeps parked here, because it has been a while since they needed two units stationed here. My excitement was short-lived, within a few days there was only one unit stationed here again. The locomotives rest on the yard lead. The north leg of thg wye can be seen on this side of the locomotives.

IC 9605
Description:
A CN local prepares to service Menasha Packaging, 1645 Bergstrom Rd., (out-of-frame to left) via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 10 Apr. '19. There are two large manufacturing facilities next door to each other here, out-of-frame to left. Both are currently Menasha Packaging facilities, owned by Menasha Corp., whose new corporate headquarters stands just to the south. The southernmost was built by Menasha Corp. in '64 after a devastating fire destroyed most of their historic downtown Menasha facility. The northernmost was built by Bergstrom Paper in the '60s. The overgrown loading dock could be used to load and unload railroad freight cars, but hasn't for many years. I used to play on that loading dock when I was a child. My dad, Louis, once worked for Bergstrom Paper; some of the land near the loading dock was available for gardens for their employees in the '70s.

IC 9605
Description:
A CN local parallels 4th St. and approaches Racine St. while working in the former SOO yard at Menasha, WI on 28 Aug. '19. The facility at right is currently home to Alliance Industries, 320 Appleton St., they apply powder coatings and manufacture sand cores. Founded at Waupaca, WI in 1979, they leased this facility in 2005. They later purchased the facility as well as the adjacent one at 313 Appleton St. The facility was home to Menasha Mill Supply Co. from at least 1939 through the 1970s, they primarily processed waste paper. It clearly used to receive rail service, but it does not seem to currently. The former MILW yard was located on the other (south) side of it; the building could be serviced by both railroads simultaneously. Intertape Polymer Group (IPG), 741 4th St., is partially visible in the background, at the opposite end of the yard. The tan building partially visible to the left is the City Limits tavern or bar and grill, 544 4th St. The building was erected in 1960 for the local chapter of the Polish Falcons of America. Looking east from Racine St.

IC 9605
Description:
A CN local approaches the South Channel (Neenah Channel) of the Fox River as it heads northeast via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 5 Sep. '19. The corporate headquarters of Plexus, 1 Plexus Way, stands in the background. Plexus stands on the site of the former P. H. Glatfelter Co. paper mill, which stood here for 135 years, the oldest part of the original mill was constructed in 1874. Glatfelter purchased the mill from Bergstrom Paper Co. in 1979. Bergstrom had purchased the mill, originally Winnebago Paper, in 1904. Glatfelter moved the jobs to Ohio in June 2006, the mill stood idle for about two years until it was torn down, demolition was completed in May 2009. Some people like the style of this new building, I do not. Looking southwest from the new Loop-the-Lake bridge (the ribbon cutting ceremony for this and the similar bridge in Menasha was held 23 Jun. '18). The pair of new bridges are part of Neenah and Menasha's Loop-the-Lake project to connect existing recreational trails in the Twin Cities.

Local is transitioning from the former SOO rails to the former C&NW rails. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. The telephone pole beyond the locomotive stands next to an abandoned portion of the C&NW right-of-way.

Description:
A CN local crosses N. Meade St. as it switches the Appvion, historically Appleton Papers, mill via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI, on 29 Jan. '22. It was founded as Appleton Coated Paper Co. at Appleton, WI, on 13 May 1907. Acquired by the National Cash Register Co. (NCR) in ’70. NCR combined Appleton Coated Paper Co., Combined Locks Paper Co., and Roaring Spring mill (in PA), to form Appleton Papers, Inc., in ’71. NCR sold Appleton Papers to B.A.T. Industries (British American Tobacco Co.) in ’78. The company endured an assortment of foreign owners for the next 23 years. Appleton Papers transferred the assets and operations of its coated free sheet business, primarily the former Combined Locks Paper Co. mill, to o new legal entity, Appleton Coated, LLC, in ’00. Appleton Papers employees completed an $810 million buyout of the company on 9 Nov. ‘01. Appleton Papers changed its trade name and logo to Appleton in ’03. Appleton changed its name to Appvion, Inc. on 13 May ’13. It was sold to Franklin Advisers, Inc., et al., on 13 Jun. ’18.

IC 9622
Description:
A CN passes the station sign as it transitions from the former C&NW rails to the former SOO rails at Shawano Junction, Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016) on 29 Jan. '22. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails.

IC 9623
Description:
CN local returns to the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 17 Sep. '17. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, the corporate overlords didn’t want to spend any money to update the plant. It stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished. Part of the fence on this side of the tracks has been temporarily removed, and some turnouts rest on the ground, either old turnouts which were recently replaced, or new turnouts about to be installed.

Description:
CN local backs across River St. as it services Coveris (formerly Exopack), 271 River St., via a remnant of the former C&NW main line at Menasha, WI on 24 Sep. '17. The building at left is the neat, old office of the idled Whiting Paper Co., 100 River St. The paper machines were shut down on 30 Mar. '16 after 134 years of providing quality paper products and living-wage jobs. Originally the Whiting and Gilbert paper mill, it was built along the Fox River Navigation Canal on the site of an abandoned dry dock in 1882 (1881). The company was a partnership of George A. Whiting and Theodore and William Gilbert. It became the George A. Whiting Paper Mills in ‘86, after he bought out the Gilbert brothers. The name was changed to George A. Whiting Paper Co. in ‘11. Much of the current facility was built after a devastating fire and explosion on 24 Aug. 1888. In Mar. '14, the 5th generation of the Whiting family sold the company to Tom Danz, who joined the company in 1999; the name was changed to Whiting Paper Co. When the closure was announced, he claimed the company could not maintain the sales volume needed to remain profitable. The mill produced matte board, scrapbooking and high-end art paper, and its unique Kona Paper, made from recycled burlap coffee bean bags. The George A. Whiting Airport, at the intersection of Airport Rd. and Appleton Rd. in Menasha, WI, was named in his honor because he donated $5,000 to construct the facility ca. the '20s. Reportedly, it was "Wisconsin’s finest and busiest airport" in the '30s. When the government decreed that there could be only 1 airmail port per county, they chose the airfield at Oshkosh, WI and the George A. Whiting Airport soon faded into history (except for the hanger, currently home to Kitz & Pfeil True Value Hardware).
