Album Info:Most, if not all, of the photographs in this album were captured in Northeast Wisconsin in the winter of 2022, so they are mostly CN operating on former C&NW, MILW, and SOO rails, as well as FV&LS operating on former SOO, MILW, C&NW, and GB&W rails. Once in a while I hope to catch ELS and WSOR on former MILW rails too.

IC 9622
Title:  IC 9622
Description:  A CN local crosses N. Meade St. as it switches the Appvion, historically Appleton Papers, mill via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI, on 29 Jan. '22. It was founded as Appleton Coated Paper Co. at Appleton, WI, on 13 May 1907. Acquired by the National Cash Register Co. (NCR) in ’70. NCR combined Appleton Coated Paper Co., Combined Locks Paper Co., and Roaring Spring mill (in PA), to form Appleton Papers, Inc., in ’71. NCR sold Appleton Papers to B.A.T. Industries (British American Tobacco Co.) in ’78. The company endured an assortment of foreign owners for the next 23 years. Appleton Papers transferred the assets and operations of its coated free sheet business, primarily the former Combined Locks Paper Co. mill, to a new legal entity, Appleton Coated, LLC, in ’00. Appleton Papers employees completed an $810 million buyout of the company on 9 Nov. ‘01. Appleton Papers changed its trade name and logo to Appleton in ’03. Appleton changed its name to Appvion, Inc. on 13 May ’13. It was sold to Franklin Advisers, Inc., et al., on 13 Jun. ’18.

Title:  GTW 4906 and IC 9622
Description:  A pair of CN locals meet at Milepost 211 on former C&NW rails at Stroebe, WI, on 29 Jan. '22. The local on the left was headed for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna. The local on the right was headed back to Neenah after switching Appvion at Appleton. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016. The location of this photograph is listed as “Stroebe(2)” because whomever first listed Stroebe as a location on rrpicturearchives.net erroneously entered it as Outagamie Co., instead of Winnebago Co. The former SOO rails run parallel along the other side of these tracks.

IC 3110
Title:  IC 3110
Description:  A CN local crosses the South Channel of the Fox River (a.k.a. the Neenah Channel of the Fox River) with 25 3-bay covered hoppers via the former joint MILW/SOO bridge at Neenah, WI, on 4 Feb. '22. Local was headed for Hilbert and Chilton. The P. H. Glatfelter Co. paper mill was the backdrop for this scene for 135 years, the oldest part of the original mill was constructed in 1874. Glatfelter purchased the mill from Bergstrom Paper Co. in 1979. Bergstrom had purchased the mill, originally Winnebago Paper, in 1904. Glatfelter moved the jobs to Ohio in June 2006. The mill stood idle for about two years until it was torn down, demolition was completed in May 2009. The corporate headquarters of Plexus, 1 Plexus Way, and Ascension Medical Group - Main Street (originally Affinity), 101 Main St., occupy most of the site of the old paper mill. Some people think these new buildings look nice; I despise them. One of the bridges for the Loop-the-Lake Trail is on the right. It appears that some have attempted to change the name to Loop-the-Little-Lake Trail for some reason.

HLCX 1048 and HLCX 1042
Title:  HLCX 1048 and HLCX 1042
Description:  A FV&LS (or FOXY) local crosses the last remaining scrap of what was once the South Channel of the Fox River via former CN, historically C&NW, rails in 'The Flats' at Appleton, WI, on 5 Feb. '22. Old maps reveal that the west end of the South Channel was filled in at some point between 1916 and 1957. Most of the remainder of the South Channel was filled in the following years. This remaining portion forms the confluence with a mill race which connects West’s Power Canal (a.k.a. West’s Canal, a.k.a. Grand Chute Island Canal) to the Fox River. Edward West bought Grand Chute Island and excavated the canal in 1870 to provide water power for the industries which were built soon after. The facility beyond the train is currently home to JWM Coenen Mechanical (historically Allis-Chalmers, originally Valley Iron Works), 401 E. South Island St. The now idled Neenah Paper (formerly Fox River Paper Co.), 600 S. Vulcan St., is partially visible in the background to the right. Neenah Paper closed this facility last year, even though they recently completed a multi-million-dollar addition to the facility. It was the last active rail customer in 'The Flats' and had been for a number of years. Hopefully a new industrial concern will purchase the facility, instead of it being torn down or converted into trendy, over-rated, over-priced apartments. Over the past several years, I have notice that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Flats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some other variation. However, the historic, industrial heart of Appleton is simply ‘The Flats.’ Many years ago it was referred to 'The Water Power.'

GTW 4632
Title:  GTW 4632
Description:  A CN local approaches the Winneconne Ave. overpass, and the remnants of the former Winneconne Ave. grade crossing, as it heads north through the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 5 Feb. '22. The front door of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century, was out-of-frame to the right. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, the corporate overlords didn’t want to spend any money to update the plant. It stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished. The iconic crossing tower which, until 1991, would have been visible above the locomotive now resides at the Mid-Continent Railway Museum: https://www.midcontinent.org/about-us/tour-of-grounds/the-crossing-tower/.

BNSF 8352, CN 3064, and CN 5469
Title:  BNSF 8352, CN 3064, and CN 5469
Description:  A CN through freight parallels Union St. as it shoves a cut of cars into the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 12 Feb. '22. The historic Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility, 434 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond the train. It was built in 1902 after the original 1892 building was destroyed by fire and is currently used for storage. The historic Murer House, 432 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond that. It was built by Felix Murer in 1892 and is currently home to Sherry Town Station. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built. A 1909 map shows the yard still here, a 1936 map depicts both the old and new yards.

Title:  IC 9563 and GTW 4910
Description:  A CN local crosses N. Lake St. as it heads northwest via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI, on 5 Mar. '22. The unfortunately idled Clearwater Paper Corp., historically Kimberly-Clark’s Lakeview mill, 249 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI (physically located in Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016)) looms in the background. Eggers Div. of VT Industries, previously Eggers Industries, founded as Hardwood Products Co. in 1910, 164 N. Lake St., an active rail customer, is partially visible to the left. Herb & Dolly Smith Park lies beyond the train to the right.

IC 9563 and GTW 4910
Title:  IC 9563 and GTW 4910
Description:  A CN local slowly bisects the intersection of W. College Ave./Hwy. 125 with S. Memorial Dr./N. Richmond St./Hwy. 47 as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI, on 5 Mar. '22. Railroad employees have to flag the crossing and the crew has to sound their horn because the signals have been malfunctioning for several weeks. The CN has attempted to repair the signals but they haven't been able to locate the problem. According to an article in the Post-Crescent on 27 Feb. '22, "The only remaining remedy is for the railway to completely replace the crossing, including all of the foundation materials. That work cannot happen until the ground thaws and the hot-mix asphalt plants open in late April or early May." The interesting brick building partially visible to the left is Good Company, a restaurant established in 1980. It was built between 1895 and ‘01 by the Marshall Paper Co. (a.k.a. Marshall Bros. Wholesale Paper or Marshall Bros. Paper), founded in ‘93. The last surviving partner retired in 1942. The facility was used for a warehouse by Kimberly-Clark (K-C) from at least ‘45 to at least ‘60. It was home to Appleton Furniture Mart ca. ‘74 to ‘77. Baxter’s Beef and Pizza Co. opened here in ‘77.

Title:  HLCX 1042
Description:  A FV&LS (or FOXY) train hugs the bluff, parallels the Fox River, and passes the S. Memorial Dr. (originally Cherry St.) bridge as it descends the grade into 'The Flats' via former CN, historically C&NW, rails at Appleton, WI, on 6 Mar. '22. Train was headed for Kimberly and Combined Locks. Now just a short branch line, this stretch of rail is a remnant of the MLS&W main line which once ran from Milwaukee to Ashland. The MILW, originally M&N, rails used to cross the river in the foreground. Over the past several years, I have noticed that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Flats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some other variation. For all of my life, the historic, industrial heart of Appleton has been simply ‘The Flats.’ However, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries it was referred to as 'The Water Power.'

Description:  A FV&LS (or FOXY) train hugs the bluff and passes the Vulcan Heritage Park as it descends the grade into 'The Flats' via former CN, historically C&NW, rails at Appleton, WI, on 6 Mar. '22. Train was headed for Kimberly and Combined Locks. Now just a short branch line, this stretch of rail (laid in 1874 (some references state 1875 or 1876)) is a remnant of the MLS&W main line which once ran from Milwaukee to Ashland. The MILW, originally M&N, rails used to run parallel on this side of the tracks (from 1880 until 1981). Most of the land in the foreground was created when the mill race, or power canal, was filled in.

Description:  A FV&LS (or FOXY) train crosses S. Whitman Ave. as it prepares to switch Quality Carriers, 700 S. Whitman Ave., at the northwest corner of the wye at the former CN, originally C&NW, yard at Appleton Junction, WI, on 12 Mar. '22. This track, which is now part of the north leg of the wye, is a remnant of the MLS&W main line which once ran from Milwaukee to Ashland. The facility partially visible in the background to the right is Foremost Farms USA, 1815 W. Spencer St. They had a spur which was removed ca. Sep. '20, it had not been used for quite a while. An old caboose is displayed in the background to the left. It is painted as RI 17177. Some references claim it was not their caboose, but MILW. It is currently for sale. I wish I could afford to purchase it (the price is not listed, but, as the old saying goes, if you have to ask, you can't afford it).

M (originally Oshkosh St.) as it heads southeast via former CN, historically C&NW, rails at Hortonville, WI, on 13 Mar. '22. It is difficult to believe that there used to be five tracks here. To the right is the historic Schwebs’ Hotel, later Hotel Jungmann, later Hotel Hoffman, currently Black Otter Supper Club, 503 S. Nash St., built in 1877. A pair of historic elevators are partially visible in the background. The near one, Peter Olk’s Elevator (a.k.a. Olk’s Elevator), 136 W. Dewey St., dates to at least 1894. Black Otter Supply is the facility’s most recent, if not current, occupant. The far one stands at 503 S. Mill St. and dates to at least 1890.
