IC 3115 and IC 9601
Title:  IC 3115 and IC 9601
Description:  A CN local crosses Stroebe Rd. as it heads northeast via former SOO rails with 6 cars at Stroebe, WI, on 31 Oct. '20. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016). The former C&NW rails are in the foreground. The Great Northern Corp. facility is partially visible in the background. They have a spur, but have not received rail service for quite a while. In fact, the turnout connecting their spur to the main line was torn out earlier this year.

IC 9601 and IC 3115
Title:  IC 9601 and IC 3115
Description:  A CN local parallels Ehlers Rd. and approaches Towmen Rd. as it heads northeast via former SOO rails at Shawano Junction, Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016) at 1430 hours on 1 Nov. '20. The train is about to transition to the former C&NW rails. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. To the left, a shiny, new, modern signal relay case stands where an awesome, old one once stood. To the right you can see some brand new signals. The installation commenced ca. 25 Apr. and was completed ca. 3 Jul. The new signals were activated and the old signals removed between 10 and 22 Aug.

GTW 4933 and IC 3115
Title:  GTW 4933 and IC 3115
Description:  A CN local traverses the west leg of the wye as it heads northwest via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI, on 26 Nov. '20. The local is passing the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. On the far side of the train lies Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye, which is hidden on the other side of the train. The Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant) used to dominate the background, from its opening in Jan. '98 until demolition was completed in the spring of '16. The corporate headquarters of Plexus, 1 Plexus Way, can be seen in the background to the right. The P. H. Glatfelter Co. paper mill occupied that site for 135 years, the oldest part of the original mill was constructed in 1874. Glatfelter purchased the mill from Bergstrom Paper Co. in 1979. Bergstrom had purchased the mill, originally Winnebago Paper, in 1904. Glatfelter moved the jobs to Ohio in June 2006, the mill stood idle for about two years until it was torn down, demolition was completed in May 2009.

It sure was nice of the railroad to complete some much-needed brush clearing along the tracks here so that train nuts like me can capture better views of their trains.

GTW 6223 and IC 3115
Title:  GTW 6223 and IC 3115
Description:  A CN local crosses Hwy. O as it heads north via former SOO rails at Mackville Station, WI, on 16 Oct. '21. Listed as Mackville Station on some old maps, distinguishing it from the community of Mackville (which is 1-mile due east of here), it is listed as Mackville on some time tables. The remnants of the depot's foundation are hidden in the overgrowth to the right of the lead locomotive. Part of the passing siding can be seen to the right of that, it has been truncated at Hwy. O. What remains forms a spur which could be used to service Greener Vision Recycling & Waste (Greener Vision Recycling, Inc.), W4892 County Rd. O, Appleton, WI 54913 (physically located in Town of Center, Outagamie Co., WI).

IC 3115
Title:  IC 3115
Description:  IC 3115 parallels Union St. and passes the former Caroline St. grade crossing as it departs the CN, former SOO, yard at Neenah, WI, on 20 Feb. '22. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built. A 1909 map shows the yard still here, a 1936 map depicts both the old and new yards.

IC 3115 and CN 5463
Title:  IC 3115 and CN 5463
Description:  A CN through freight bisects the intersection of W. Franklin St. and N. Division St. as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI, on 19 Mar. '22. Hoersch Home Appliance, 218 N. Division St., has been in business since 1945, previously known as Home Appliance Co. until at least '67. Previously located at 225 W. College Ave. ca. '50s, later located at 307 W. College Ave., until it moved to this location ca. '82. The former Furnishings Unlimited warehouse stands on the other side of the tracks at right. The historic address of the facility is 323 N. Clark St. The current business address is 311 N. Superior St.; the address probably changed after an addition was added to the northeast end of the facility after 1981. The building was likely erected by the Cohen Bros. Fruit Co., after a natural gas explosion destroyed their previous facility ca. 10 Sep. 1948 (or was the damaged building repaired?). Furnishings Unlimited acquired the facility in or prior to 1981. The building had painted signs for Cohen Bros. and Sunkist until at least 1981. The facility used to receive rail service, but it hasn't for quite some time. The most recent occupant is, or was, Appleton Furniture Direct.

GTW 4933 and IC 3115
Title:  GTW 4933 and IC 3115
Description:  A CN train passes the former C&NW depot and approaches S. 14th St. as it heads southwest with 23 3-bay covered hoppers at Manitowoc, WI, on 20 Aug. '23. I previously thought this depot had been built by the MLS&W ca. 1872. Some references state or suggest it could be the original depot built when the railroad was incorporated. However, the Sanborn maps reveal that this masonry depot was built between 1887 and 1894 to replace the earlier framed depot. If it was built prior to 1 Sep. '93, it was built by the MLS&W. If it was built after that date, it was C&NW. A couple of awkward additions were constructed after the railroad stopped using it. It is/was used by Holiday House of Manitowoc County, Inc. They have a newer facility, not sure if they still use this or not. The C&NW built a new depot about a mile to the west in 1945, but that one no longer exists.

Title:  IC 3115, et al.
Description:  A CN train crosses S. 14th St. as it heads southwest with 23 3-bay covered hoppers at Manitowoc, WI, on 20 Aug. '23. Who’s the doofus who left their video camera and tripod fouling my shot? Oh wait, that was me. I intended to shoot this train as it ran along Franklin St., but two other camera-equipped railfans beat me to it. I didn’t want to foul their shot, so I shot the depot.

IC 3115 and QTTX 130503
Title:  IC 3115 and QTTX 130503
Description:  IC 3115 sorts cars, including QTTX 130503 (transporting a Nationwide Boiler Incorporated skid-mounted boiler), at the north end of the CN, former SOO, yard at Neenah, WI, on 12 Nov. '23. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994. It stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished.

Title:  IC 3115 and WC 15
Description:  IC 3115 shoves WC 15 through the CN, former SOO, yard at Neenah, WI, on 12 Nov. '23. I believe they were assembling the Oshkosh local. Sorry, but I will not willingly utter the phrase "shoving platform" to describe a piece of rolling stock which is obviously a caboose. WC 15 is the former AC 9602, although one reference claims it was AC 9606.
