Description:
A CN local parallels Ehlers Rd. and approaches Towmen Rd. at Shawano Junction, Fox Crossing, WI, on 6 Nov. '22 Local was headed for Appleton, Little Chute and Kaukauna, and is transitioning from the former SOO rails to the former C&NW rails. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails.

CN 5646
Description:
CN local crosses Pemene Dam Rd. and passes the station sign as it hauls 9 cars northeast via the former SOO, rails at Kremlin, WI on 1 Oct. '14. Train was heading back to MI after servicing Specialty Granules, Inc. (SGI) at Kremlin and setting out 24 cars for the E&LS at Pembine, WI. The train is starting to descend a long grade down to the bridge over the Menominee River. I don't know the percentage of the gradient, but it appears quite a bit steeper than average (not so much here but closer to the river).

GTW 4907
Description:
As a CN through freight traverses the west leg of the wye, and a CN work train pauses on the north leg of the wye, a CN local also creeps onto the north leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 9 May '20. On the far side of the train lies Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye. A large quantity of fill is being added to the eastern half of the park, in preparation of future improvements. The Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant) dominated the eastern half of the landfill from its opening in Jan. '98 until demolition was completed in the spring of '16. The former C&NW bridge across Little Lake Butte des Morts, now part of the Friendship Trail (often erroneously referred to as the Trestle Trail), can be seen in the background. The Roland Kampo Bridge, a.k.a. the Polish Connection, can be seen beyond that.

Description:
CN local crosses the turnout for the north leg of the wye as it traverses the east leg of the wye at north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 28 Aug ’16. The rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties in the foreground rest atop the remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. Plexus and the Affinity clinic in the background were erected on part of the site of the former P. H. Glatfelter Co. paper mill, which stood here for 135 years, the oldest part of the original mill was constructed in 1874. Glatfelter purchased the mill from Bergstrom Paper Co. in 1979. Bergstrom had purchased the mill, originally Winnebago Paper, in 1904. Glatfelter moved the jobs to Ohio in June 2006, the mill stood idle for about two years until it was torn down, demolition was completed in May 2009. The steel skeleton of Neenah's latest repugnant, modern office building rises background right. There is not much room for historic buildings or classic architecture in Future Neenah. I believe the train was preparing to head toward Manitowoc.

Title:
IC 3110 and GTW 5850
Description:
A CN local bisects the intersection of W. College Ave./Hwy. 125 with S. Memorial Dr./N. Richmond St./Hwy. 47 (probably the busiest intersection, consequently busiest grade crossing, in Appleton) as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 16 Jun. '19. The interesting brick building behind the train is Good Company, a restaurant established in 1980. It was built between 1895 and ‘01 by the Marshall Paper Co. (a.k.a. Marshall Bros. Wholesale Paper or Marshall Bros. Paper); founded in ‘93 by Simon and Samuel G. Marshall (father and son). It initially operated across Richmond St. at the Marshall & Hammel grain facility (Simon was a partner in that company) until the current building was completed. Samuel's brothers, Louis J. and Harry M., later joined the company, whose products included wrapping paper and printing paper. It used to receive rail service, the spur was on the north side of the building. That spur crossed Richmond St. and also served the Marshall & Hammel Grain Elevator & Warehouse, which stood where the Walgreen's parking lot is now. That spur included a switchback to service Fountain Lumber Co. (J. Fountain Lumber Co.), 129 N. State St., founded by John Fountain in 1897. Louis J. Marshall, the last surviving brother, sold the company when he retired in 1942. The facility was used for a warehouse by Kimberly-Clark (K-C) from at least ‘45 to at least ‘60. It was home to Appleton Furniture Mart ca. ‘74 to ‘77. Baxter’s Beef and Pizza Co. opened here in ‘77. Train was headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna.

Description:
Looking northeast over the south end of the CN, former SOO, yard at Neenah, WI, on 15 May '20. One reason for this photograph is the four yellow John Deere tracked vehicles staged at this end of the yard. They, and others, will soon be loaded onto flatcars for Michels Materials. It is an interesting process to watch, if you happen to be at the right place at the right time. The tracks at the far right are remnants of the former C&NW main line and yard. The tan 4- or 5-story facility at the center of the horizon is currently home to 5K Fibres, 1111 Henry St., based in Greenville, WI. They purchased the former Kimberly-Clark Corp. (K-C) Neenah Nonwovens Facility ca. Apr. '20.

CN through freight heads southeast through the Rat River Wildlife Area via former SOO rails at Medina Junction, WI on 15 Jan. '17. Train had three locomotives, CN 3050 and CN 2807 pulling and CN 2859 mid-train. Most of the cars belonged to Potash Corp., but rear of the train was mixed freight.
