CP 8828 and CREX 1504
Description:
An interesting foreigner leads a through freight as it approaches S. Perkins St. while headed northeast through the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 24 Mar. '18. Train had two locomotives, CP 8828 and CREX 1504. There is a spur along the south side of the facility at right, but the turnout was removed years ago. The oldest part of the building was completed in Mar. '60, the new facility for the Fox Valley Sheltered Workshop. Inc. (started in '55 to create employment opportunities for the disabled). It became Valley Packaging Industries Inc. ca. mid- or late-'80s. After they moved to a new facility, this one has been home to Valley Planing Mill, Inc., followed by Perfect Patterns, Inc., and most recently as extra warehouse space for All About Packaging, Inc.

CN 3800, CREX 1511, CN 2848
Description:
A CN through freight passes the remnants of the former C&NW yard as it heads southwest at Oshkosh, WI on 18 Jun. '18. Train had three locomotives, CN 3800, CREX 1511, CN 2848. A cut of cars rests by the depot/yard office and a gondola rests on the team track. I was thrilled to find these cars here, because I thought it meant the local had made a daylight run (the Oshkosh local seems to usually be a nocturnal run). I waited for quite a while, but didn't see or hear any other signs of the local's presence. The depot/yard office sits at the approximate location of the C&NW's South Oshkosh depot, a smaller, plainer structure than their once ornate Oshkosh depot which still stands less than a mile to the north. Historically, everything south of the Fox River was once known as South Oshkosh. The C&NW South Oshkosh depot was saved from demolition, but its current fate is unknown to me. I have seen post-relocation photographs of it on the internet, but they do not reveal its precise location. Some references state it was moved to downtown Oshkosh, others state it was moved to a park in Oshkosh. If it still survives, I have not found it yet. Most of the yard was torn up in Aug. '16; they did leave the passing siding and team track. The 2013 bascule bridge over the Fox River, built to replace the 1899 swing bridge, is visible in the background to the left.

Description:

Train had three locomotives, CN 3837 and CREX 1517 pulling as well as CN 3807 pushing. Consist included four head-end buffer cars, including a pair of SOO 3-bay covered hoppers sporting 2 variations of the wheat paint scheme. The paint scheme is often referred to as "sheaf of wheat" or "shock of wheat," but one stalk does not a sheaf nor a shock make. I have also heard it referred to as "wheat stripe."

Description:
After setting out and picking up some cars, the motive power of a CN through freight emerges from the north end of the former SOO yard to reassemble its train at the former Adams St. grade crossing at Neenah, WI on 2 Jun. '19. Adams St. was originally Washington St., until at least 1913. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St. used to be the yard. '19. Adams St. was originally Washington St., until at least 1913. The historic Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility, 434 Sherry St., is partially visible in the background at left. It was built in 1902 after the original 1892 building was destroyed by fire and is currently used for storage. The historic Murer House, 432 Sherry St., is partially visible to the right of that. It was built by Felix Murer in 1892 and is currently home to Sherry Town Station. The WC (later SOO) depot stood on the opposite side of Sherry St. from those two buildings; it was built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest. The Main St. overpass is partially visible in the background at left. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St. used to be the yard. CN 3037, CREX 1519, et al.
Description:
A CN through freight crosses N. Lake St. as it heads southeast via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 15 Dec. '18. At left, a very enthusiastic, young railfan (with his parent or guardian) records the train with his cellular telephone. Just out-of-frame to the left, a unit train of bi-level autoracks waits to head northwest. Eggers Industries, 164 N. Lake St., an active rail customer, is partially visible at right. Founded at Neenah, WI, in 1910 as Hardwood Products Co., construction of the facility commenced in Oct. ’10. It was renamed Hardwood Products Corp. as a result of a merger with Mississippi Veneer & Lumber Co. on 20 Apr. ’22 (the latter company was formed by the same businessmen who founded the Neenah company). Eggers Industries acquired Hardwood Products Corp. in 1965 and renamed it Eggers Hardwood Products Corp. Eggers was founded by Fred W. Eggers at Two Rivers, WI in 1884 to make wood baskets used by farmers. They later started making plywood and other wood veneer products. There used to be 3 spurs to service the facility, now there is only 1. Train had three locomotives, CN 3037 and CREX 1519 pulling and CN 2934 mid-train.

CN 2827, CN 2807, et al.
Description:
CN through freight bisects the CHS Larsen Cooperative - Readfield grain terminal and fertilizer facility as it heads east via former SOO rails at North Readfield, WI on 28 Oct. '17. Larsen Cooperative merged with CHS, Inc. on 1 Sep. '12. At right, a railcar mover positions covered hoppers for loading. The idle Proppant Specialists, LLC, facility is partially visible at left. Train had three locomotives, CN 2827 and CN 2807 up front and CN 2909 mid-train. Some confuse North Readfield with slightly larger Readfield, 1 mile to the south. This is likely due, in part, because everything in the former has a mailing address of the latter. The pair of unincorporated communities are distinct, and the latter has no railroad tracks.

CN 2807 and GECX 2042
Description:
CN container train parallels Hwy. 41 and approaches the Hwy. G overpass as it head southwest via former SOO rails at Snells, WI on 27 Jan. '18. Snells, formerly known as Snell’s Station or Snell’s Crossing, is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. This small, rural community once included a post office, depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. Snells was located at Mile 183 on the SOO’s Trevor to Somerset line and Mile 173.1 on the C&NW’s Milwaukee to Marinette line. I do not know if each railroad had their own small depot, or if one small depot served both railroads, I suspect it was the latter. It does not look like any real remnants of the original community remain. Even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone.

CN 2811 and CN 2873 at C&NW/CN Oshkosh, WI Yard Office
Description:
A southbound CN tank car unit train passes the yard office in an unusually empty former C&NW yard at Oshkosh, WI on 10 Feb. '16. Normally this view of the facility is blocked by the cars in the yard. I've never seen this yard completely empty. This building sits several yards south of the location of the C&NW's South Oshkosh depot, a smaller, plainer structure than their once ornate Oshkosh depot which still stands less than a mile to the north. Train had three locomotives, CN 2811 and CN 2873 pulling, as well as CN 2909 pushing. The new bascule bridge over the Fox River is visible background right, it was completed in Aug. '13 to replace the 1899 swing bridge.

CN through freight is about to pass under the 2nd St. bridge as it heads southeast via former SOO rails at Amherst Junction, WI on 25 Apr. '15. The track for interchange with the former GB&W is rising in the background. This was a chance encounter, otherwise I would have attempted to shoot around the small tree growing on the embankment. While it is clearly visible in the photograph, it was not so visible in the view finder.

CN 3007 and CN 2812
Description:
A CN through freight parallels Union St. and passes the Main St. overpass as it leans into the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 19 May '18. The north leg of the wye can be seen near the bottom of the photograph. In the foreground, fill is being added to a portion of the park in preparation for future improvements to the park. The front facade of the remaining portion of the Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility, 434 Sherry St., Neenah, WI, is partially visible at left. It was built in 1902 after the original building was destroyed in a fire. The original 2-story brick building was constructed by Nicholas Simon in 1892, a 3rd story was added later. It was home to his N. Simon & Co., a cheese maker as well as wholesaler of butter, cheese and eggs, until he moved his company to Appleton, WI, ca. 1900. He was well-known both for the quality of his cheese as well as for making several gigantic cheeses. His largest weighed 12,361 lbs., was 8’ in diameter and 5’ thick, which he created on 15 Aug. ’11 at Appleton, WI, to be exhibited at the National Dairy Show held in Chicago later that year. By the 1950s the facility was home to the L. D. Schreiber & Co. refrigerated warehouse. A 2-story section at the rear of the building was demolished at some point. It appears to be used for storage now, and has been for quite a while.
