CN local passes the site of former interlocking tower that guarded the former junction of SOO and C&NW, now the Mountain-Bay State Trail as it switches local industry at Shawano, WI on 30 Jul. '13. The tower stood to the right of the bicyclists, south of SOO tracks and east of C&NW tracks, until it was torn down circa 1995. There are remnants of a foundation in the clump of trees in front of 1st box car, but I don’t recall what used to be there.

Description:
CN local crosses the former N. Union St. grade crossing and is about to disappear behind the north side of the historic Tuttle Press Co. factory, 600 E. Hancock St., as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 3 Sep. '15. The first part was constructed in 1905, over the years the factory grew until it occupied the entire city block as it does now. A. F. Tuttle, founder and president, invented the first multi-color web printing press for printing tissue paper. Fox Valley Corp., nothing but a holding company, purchased it at some point prior to the mid-1970s. It continued to operate as Tuttle Press Co. until early 1983, when the holding company merged it with George S. Carrington Co. of Leominster, Mass., to form Artfaire. Fox Valley Corp. moved this facility’s production to one of their other subsidiaries in Tenn. circa 1990. The facility then became Sulpaco West, Inc., part of Sullivan Paper Co. in Mass. They shuttered this facility on 27 Jun. ’02, when they moved its production to one of their other facilities in Mass. For about a century the facility produced a variety of renowned specialty papers: napkins, table covers, tissue, craft paper, gift boxes, crepe paper, even paper dolls, but especially gift wrapping paper. There aren’t any business signs on the building now and I haven’t been able to learn who currently owns it. The roof line above the TPPX car on the left is part of some new apartments or condominiums under construction where the historic Eagle Manufacturing Co. complex stood. Incorporated in Dec. 1888, Eagle made gasoline engines, tractors, and other farm implements. They built that factory in 1904, after they outgrew their original facility in the Flats. There was a diamond on the opposite side of the train (near the tree between the wood chip gondola and covered hopper) for two intersecting spurs that served Eagle, Ideal Lumber and Coal Co., and C. D. Rowell & Son, Manufacturing, makers of car movers.

It is difficult to tell from this angle, but the train was crossing over from the former SOO main to the former C&NW passing siding at Milepost 211. Train had pulled onto the SOO rails at Shawano Junction to allow a through freight to head southwest via the C&NW main. Normally the local could have waited on the C&NW passing siding, but a long string of cars had been spotted there for several days (that string of cars is visible curving to the left in the background). Local was headed for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna.

CN local slowly crawls across the former C&NW bridge over the frigid Fox River as it prepares to service Expera Specialty Solutions mill (formerly Thilmany Pulp and Paper Co., from 1883 until 26 Jun. '13) at Kaukauna, WI on 4 Jan. '15. Railroad bridge was built by American Bridge Co. of New York in 1911. A portion of the old Thilmany mill, saved from the wrecking ball, is visible behind the locomotives. The current, newer, mill looms out of frame to the right. Kaukauna’s Veterans Memorial Bridge, the vertical lift bridge, reflects the last rays of the setting sun behind the remnants of the old mill.

A pair of CN locomotives pass the end of a local via former SOO rails at Byron, WI on Memorial Day, 25 May '15. The local had about 10 boxcars and two locomotives and may have been preparing to service the nearby Quad Graphics facility. I believe these locomotives were headed back to Fond du Lac after helping a container train up Byron Hill.

Description:
An interesting locomotive sorts cars at the north end of the CN, former SOO, yard at Neenah, WI on 31 Jan. '19. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, it stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished.

A CN locomotive, EJE 666, crosses N. Lake St. as it heads northwest via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 18 May '19. Eggers Div. of VT Industries, 164 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI, an active rail customer, is partially visible at right. Founded at Neenah, WI, in 1910 as Hardwood Products Co., construction of the facility commenced in Oct. ’10. It was renamed Hardwood Products Corp. as a result of a merger with Mississippi Veneer & Lumber Co. on 20 Apr. ’22 (the latter company was formed by the same businessmen who founded the Neenah company). Eggers Industries acquired Hardwood Products Corp. in 1965 and renamed it Eggers Hardwood Products Corp. Eggers was founded by Fred W. Eggers at Two Rivers, WI in 1884 to make wood baskets used by farmers. They later started making plywood and other wood veneer products. EJE 666 clears N. Lake St. as it heads northwest via CN, former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 18 May '19. Eggers Div. of VT Industries, 164 N. Lake St., an active rail customer, is partially visible at left. Founded at Neenah, WI, in 1910 as Hardwood Products Co., construction of the facility commenced in Oct. ’10. It was renamed Hardwood Products Corp. as a result of a merger with Mississippi Veneer & Lumber Co. on 20 Apr. ’22 (the latter company was formed by the same businessmen who founded the Neenah company). Eggers Industries acquired Hardwood Products Corp. in 1965 and renamed it Eggers Hardwood Products Corp. Eggers was founded by Fred W. Eggers at Two Rivers, WI in 1884 to make wood baskets used by farmers. They later started making plywood and other wood veneer products.
