Title:
IC 2714 and CN 5792
Description:
A CN train (with a friendly crew) passes the former C&NW depot as it heads northeast at Green Bay, WI, on 15 Apr. '23. The depot, designed by Charles Sumner Frost, was built in the Italian Renaissance Revival style and completed in 1899. Passenger train service ceased in 1971 but it was still used by the railroad for years. From 1996 until 2021, it was home to Titletown Brewing Co. When they moved to larger quarters in one of the neighboring former cannery buildings, a new restaurant moved in, The Depot Gastro Pub. It looks like the current occupant is a restaurant called simply The Depot. The depot is also a stop on the Green Bay Packers' Heritage Trail. On the right is PPCX 800239, formerly AMTK 3222 'Palm Beach', formerly SCL 6602, formerly SAL 15. The 6-bedroom lounge car was built by American Car and Foundry Corp. in 1949 and ran on SCL between NY and FL for many years. Amtrak spent $150,000 on repairs and remodeling after a wreck in 1974, but discontinued it from service in 1977. Robert Nelson, a tax attorney at the National Railroad Museum at the time, purchased it from AMTK in 1978. He reconfigured the interior to 5 bedrooms, bar-lounge, and kitchenette. The restoration of the sleeper-lounge car was done well enough that it qualified to be pulled by AMTK trains. Not sure how long he owned it or who owns it now.

Description:
A CN train (with a friendly crew) approaches the station sign as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Green Bay, WI, on 15 Apr. '23. The tracks ended about 200 feet beyond the station sign in 1862, until construction resumed in 1871. This was where the yard used to be, until the current, much larger yard was built at North Green Bay.

A CN local crosses Main St. as it pulls 20 cars northwest via former C&NW rails at Hermansville, MI on 3 Nov. '18. Train had two locomotives, CN 2718 and CN 5335. The interesting, old, brick building at left was the Hiawatha Fur Farm's (Hiawatha Silver Fox Farm's) pelting station or fur house. It was likely built in 1931, because the company's earlier facility was destroyed by fire in Feb. of that year. The facility pelted furs for at least seven farms owned by or associated with the Nieman family in Wis. and Upper Mich. (in the 1940s at least). The pelts were shipped by rail to fur auctions in New York.

CN 2718
Description:
A CN local disappears from public view as it pulls 20 cars into the vast rail network within the immense, collocated Verso Paper and Specialty Minerals complex at Quinnesec, MI on 3 Nov. '18. Champion International Corp. commenced construction of a pulp mill here in 1981. Pulp production began 1985, paper production followed in 1990. The facility is served via former C&NW rails. It was purchased by International Paper ca. 2000. They sold their coated paper mills to Apollo Global Management, LLC, in 2006, naming the new entity Verso Corp., Verso Paper, or Verso Paper Corp. (depending on which reference you choose to believe). It is difficult to see, due to the less-than-desirable location of the sun, but the locomotives can be seen beyond the tree line as they head south into the sizeable yard on the property.

CN 2246, IC 2718, CN 8002, BCOL 4652, et al.
Description:
A CN through freight rests along Union St. at the former Sherry St. grade crossing at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 10 Apr. '20. Train had five locomotives, CN 2246, IC 2718, CN 8002, BCOL 4652, CN 5261. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here.

IC 2720 and CN 5636
Description:
CN through freight parallels Hwy. 41 and passes the Hwy. G overpass as it heads southwest via former SOO rails at Snells, WI on 12 Aug. '17. Snells is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. A Post Office was established 4 May 1876, originally called Snell’s Station, sometimes referred to as Snell’s Crossing. This small, rural community once included a depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. Snells was located at Mile 183 on the SOO’s Trevor to Somerset line and Mile 173.1 on the C&NW’s Milwaukee to Marinette line. The former SOO main line lies between the train and the highway. It does not look like any real remnants of the original community remain. Even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone. Train had four locomotives, IC 2720 and CN 5636 leading and CN 5639 and CN 8913 mid-train.

CN through freight approaches River Rd. as it heads northwest via former SOO rails near Gills Landing, WI on 24 Feb. '15. Train was slowing to halt on the siding at Weyauwega. It was a chance encounter and I was in a hurry, otherwise I might have noticed the large shadow which was about to fall across the lead locomotive.

IC 2725, CN 5691, CN 2298
Description:
CN through freight approaches the Main St. over pass as it traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI 13 Dec. '17. Train had three locomotives, IC 2725, CN 5691, CN 2298. The rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties, visible to the left of the locomotives, rest atop the remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. The silo in the background belongs to Eggers Industries (originally Hardwood Products Corp.), 164 N. Lake St., a periodic rail customer. The woodpile background left contains remnants of old telephone poles which were removed from somewhere along the line earlier this year. The east leg of the wye is in the foreground.

The Neenah Stove Works, currently occupied by Hafemeister Machine Corp., 635 Main St. and International Children's Fund, 619 Main St., is partially visible background left. [The facility has undergone numerous name changes in its long history, but if one were to pick a generic and historic name for it, it would need to be Neenah Stove Works because that is what it was referred to for so many years, through several changes in ownership. The second most common generic reference would be the Neenah foundry, because for many years it was the only foundry in Neenah, but obviously that could cause confusion today.] Clearwater Paper Corp., formerly Kimberly-Clark’s Lakeview mill, 249 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI (physically located in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, WI until 14 Apr. '16)), stands background right. The east leg of the wye is in the foreground.

IC 2726
Description:
A CN container train passes Kampo Rd. as it heads southwest via a remnant of the former C&NW main line, now relegated to a passing siding, at Neenah, WI, on 24 Oct. '20. Train had two locomotives, IC 2726 pulling as well as CN 2689 pushing. The former SOO rails, also in use by CN, run parallel along the other side of the train. The building in the background to the left was home to Plexus' Neenah Design Center, 55 Jewelers Park Dr., Neenah, WI. Erected in 1987 and expanded in 2000, it has stood vacant since 2017, when they decided they needed another new office building in downtown Neenah for some stupid reason. At least one tenant has occupied part of the building recently.
