CN 2827, CN 2807, et al.
Title:  CN 2827, CN 2807, et al.
Description:  CN through freight bisects the CHS Larsen Cooperative - Readfield grain terminal and fertilizer facility as it heads east via former SOO rails at North Readfield, WI on 28 Oct. '17. Larsen Cooperative merged with CHS, Inc. on 1 Sep. '12. At right, a railcar mover positions covered hoppers for loading. The idle Proppant Specialists, LLC, facility is partially visible at left. Train had three locomotives, CN 2827 and CN 2807 up front and CN 2909 mid-train. Some confuse North Readfield with slightly larger Readfield, 1 mile to the south. This is likely due, in part, because everything in the former has a mailing address of the latter. The pair of unincorporated communities are distinct, and the latter has no railroad tracks.

CN 2807 and GECX 2042
Title:  CN 2807 and GECX 2042
Description:  CN container train parallels Hwy. 41 and approaches the Hwy. G overpass as it head southwest via former SOO rails at Snells, WI on 27 Jan. '18. Snells, formerly known as Snell’s Station or Snell’s Crossing, is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. This small, rural community once included a post office, depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. Snells was located at Mile 183 on the SOO’s Trevor to Somerset line and Mile 173.1 on the C&NW’s Milwaukee to Marinette line. I do not know if each railroad had their own small depot, or if one small depot served both railroads, I suspect it was the latter. It does not look like any real remnants of the original community remain. Even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone.

CN 2811 and CN 2873 at C&NW/CN Oshkosh, WI Yard Office
Title:  CN 2811 and CN 2873 at C&NW/CN Oshkosh, WI Yard Office
Description:  A southbound CN tank car unit train passes the yard office in an unusually empty former C&NW yard at Oshkosh, WI on 10 Feb. '16. Normally this view of the facility is blocked by the cars in the yard. I've never seen this yard completely empty. This building sits several yards south of the location of the C&NW's South Oshkosh depot, a smaller, plainer structure than their once ornate Oshkosh depot which still stands less than a mile to the north. Historically, everything south of the Fox River was once known as South Oshkosh. The C&NW South Oshkosh depot was saved from demolition, but its current fate is unknown to me. I have seen post-relocation photographs of it on the internet, but they do not reveal its precise location. Some references state it was moved to downtown Oshkosh, others state it was moved to a park in Oshkosh. If it still survives, I have not found it yet. Train had three locomotives, CN 2811 and CN 2873 pulling, as well as CN 2909 pushing. The new bascule bridge over the Fox River is visible background right, it was completed in Aug. '13 to replace the 1899 swing bridge.

Title:  CN 2812 and CN 5481
Description:  CN through freight is about to pass under the 2nd St. bridge as it heads southeast via former SOO rails at Amherst Junction, WI on 25 Apr. '15. The track for interchange with the former GB&W is rising in the background. This was a chance encounter, otherwise I would have attempted to shoot around the small tree growing on the embankment. While it is clearly visible in the photograph, it was not so visible in the view finder.

CN 3007 and CN 2812
Title:  CN 3007 and CN 2812
Description:  A CN through freight parallels Union St. and passes the Main St. overpass as it leans into the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 19 May '18. The north leg of the wye can be seen near the bottom of the photograph. In the foreground, fill is being added to a portion of the park in preparation for future improvements to the park. The front facade of the remaining portion of the Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility, 434 Sherry St., Neenah, WI, is partially visible at left. It was built in 1902 after the original building was destroyed in a fire. The original 2-story brick building was constructed by Nicholas Simon in 1892, a 3rd story was added later. It was home to his N. Simon & Co., a cheese maker as well as wholesaler of butter, cheese and eggs, until he moved his company to Appleton, WI, ca. 1900. He was well-known both for the quality of his cheese as well as for making several gigantic cheeses. His largest weighed 12,361 lbs., was 8’ in diameter and 5’ thick, which he created on 15 Aug. ’11 at Appleton, WI, to be exhibited at the National Dairy Show held in Chicago later that year. By the 1950s the facility was home to the L. D. Schreiber & Co. refrigerated warehouse. A 2-story section at the rear of the building was demolished at some point. It appears to be used for storage now, and has been for quite a while.

CN 2812, et al.
Title:  CN 2812, et al.
Description:  A CN container train crosses Winchester Rd./Hwy. II, crosses Ehlers Rd., and approaches the Hwy. 41 overpass as it heads northwest via former SOO rails at Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, WI until 14 Apr. '16) on 5 Mar. '17. Train had two locomotives, CN 2812 and CN 3007. The first highway bridge over the then SOO railroad tracks here was built when Hwy. 41 was relocated to what was then the rural outskirts of the Fox Cities. The project commenced in the late-1930s and continued into the 1940s. The relocation allowed for expansion to a 4-lane highway (‘superhighway’ or ‘belt line’), as well as bypassing the congestion of the downtowns of Neenah, Menasha, and Appleton. On 18 Apr. ’36, the State Highway Commission of Wis. authorized “construction of an overhead bridge in Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., on the proposed route of U.S. Highway 41.” The overpass project was referred to as the Neenah Belt Line Overhead.

CN 2940 and CN 2812
Title:  CN 2940 and CN 2812
Description:  A CN container train passes the Hwy. G overpass and parallels Hwy. 41 as it heads southwest via former SOO rails at Snells, WI on 4 Dec. '18. Snells, formerly known as Snell’s Station or Snell’s Crossing, is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. This small, rural community once included a post office, depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. It does not look like any real remnants of the original community remain. Even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone.

Description:  A CN through freight crosses Towmen Rd. as it crosses over from the former SOO rails (in the foreground) to the former C&NW rails while headed northeast at Shawano Junction, WI on 23 Aug. '17. Shawano Junction is in Fox Crossing (originally Town of Menasha until 14 Apr. '16). This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails.

Title:  CN 2815 and CN 2914
Description:  CN mixed freight approaches Wood St. and passes the former Vetter Manufacturing Co. as it slows to halt at the former SOO yard at Stevens Point, WI on 22 Aug. '15. The Vetter Manufacturing Co. planing mill and sash and door factory started in 1893, when Herman August Vetter purchased the abandoned Herren and Wadleigh planing mill. The following year he partnered with his brother, Carl Henry Vetter. In 1909 they constructed a large, modern factory which would quadruple their capacity. The 4-story, 72' x 250' re-enforced concrete and brick building was built for $35,000. That building is on the north side of this building, which is the 72' x 160' warehouse they built in 1915 on the site of the original wood-framed mill. The company was purchased by Sentry Insurance in 1981. I have not discovered when it closed, it has stood idle for many years. Earlier this year it was announced that VPK Packaging, a Belgian co. founded in 1935, would take over part of this facility for its 1st U.S. factory and make cores for the foil and paper industries. Stevens Point was originally knowns as Shaurette Rapids. GB&W rails ran along Wood St. for many years and a GB&W engine house was located across the street from Vetter Mfg. Co.
