CN through freight passes a halted CN local adjacent to Harrison St. as the through freight heads northeast via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 4 Jul. ’14. Neenah Foundry Plant 2 & Plant 3 form part of the backdrop at left. Plant 2 opened in 1960 and Plant 3 was built in 1967. Plant 1 opened in 1918 and stood about a mile to the north, until it was closed in 1994 and eventually demolished.

Description:
A CN through freight passes the Main St. overpass and leans into the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 4 Feb. '19. Train had two locomotives,. The lead locomotive is passing the turnout for the north leg of the wye. The remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot rest on the opposite side of the locomotives. The rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties rest atop the remnants of the foundation. The masonry depot was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened.

Description:
A CN through freight traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard and approaches the Main St. overpass at Neenah, WI, on 26 Nov. '20. Train had three locomotives, CN 2274, CN 2543, BCOL 4602. First Presbyterian Church, 200 S. Church St., is partially visible above the second locomotive. The clock tower of the once impressive 1888 city hall building, intersection of S. Commercial St. and W. Doty St., looks like a church steeple from this perspective, but it is a block east of the church. Some of Neenah's bland, unimaginative, modern buildings, posing as architecture, stand in the background to the left. I am not a fan of modern architecture, obviously. The Holiday gas station stood somewhere in the foreground before the Main St. overpass was built.

Description:
A CN passes the former Sherry St. grade crossing (marked by the guardrail in the shadows at left) and parallels Union St. as it heads south at north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 12 Sep. '17. Train had three locomotives, CN 2568, CN 2431, BCOL 4611. The WC (later SOO) depot was built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest. The white building behind the train is what remains of the Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility at 434 Sherry St., Neenah, WI. It was built in 1902 after the original building was destroyed in a fire. The original 2-story brick building was constructed by Nicholas Simon in 1892, a 3rd story was added later. It was home to his N. Simon & Co., a cheese maker as well as wholesaler of butter, cheese and eggs, until he moved his company to Appleton, WI, ca. 1900. He was well-known both for the quality of his cheese as well as for making several gigantic cheeses. His largest weighed 12,361 lbs., was 8’ in diameter and 5’ thick, which he created on 15 Aug. ’11 at Appleton, WI, to be exhibited at the National Dairy Show held in Chicago later that year. By the 1950s the facility was home to the L. D. Schreiber & Co. refrigerated warehouse. A 2-story section at the rear of the building was demolished at some point. It appears to be used for storage now, and has been for quite a while.

The former C&NW right-of-way runs parallel on this side of the tree line at right. The CN main line transitions from the former SOO to the former C&NW right-of-way at Harrison St. I was standing on Harrison St., in the City of Oshkosh, but the train is traversing an isolated, pitiful scrap of the Town of Oshkosh. The locomotives are passing a turnout for what is now just a spur for a solitary active rail customer. Not too long ago there were numerous rail customers along that stretch of rail. That track once formed the northern leg of a gigantic loop around the northern half of Oshkosh. I intended to capture a better view of the turnout and spur, but my timing was a little off, obviously.

CN through freight has halted adjacent to Harrison St., split its train, and is now shoving 13 cars into the south end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 4 Jul. ’14. I presume they were going to drop off one or more of those cars before recoupling to the remainder of their train, which included a string of over 60 loaded Herzog ballast cars, and continuing on their way. I was not able to stay long enough to find out for sure.
