Title:
CN 2987
Description:
A CN container train hugs the western shore of Lake Winnebago as it heads north via former C&NW rails at Oshkosh, WI on 24 Feb. '18. Several ice fishing shanties can be seen out on the lake. I had hoped to capture a similar scene a week or two earlier, when there was much more activity on the ice, due to the sturgeon spearing season (the railroad did not cooperate). Train had two locomotives, CN 2856 pulling and CN 2987 pushing.

CN 2989
Description:
CN through freight parallels W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd. and approaches Stroebe Rd. as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Stroebe, WI on 5 Apr. '18. Train was headed toward Green Bay. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI until 14 Apr. '16 (not Outagamie Co., where Stroebe was erroneously placed on this site)). The former SOO rails are in the foreground.

CN 2992 and CN 3012
Description:
A CN train passes the former Caroline St. grade crossing as it prepares to halt at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 23 Jul. '23. The train was preparing to halt to allow a southbound train to pass. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard, built by WC in 1882. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built. A 1909 map shows the yard still here, a 1936 map depicts both the old and new yards.

BNSF 6935, BNSF 38xx, and CN 2994
Description:
A pair of unit trains of 2-bay covered hoppers, both led by BNSF units, meet on CN rails at Dixie Rd. at Town of Vinland, Winnebago Co., WI on 27 Jan. '18. Train in the foreground is heading northeast via former SOO rails and had three locomotives, BNSF 4092, BNSF 4428, and BNSF 6675. Train in the background waits to head the opposite direction from Dixie Siding, a remnant of the former C&NW main line and had three locomotives, BNSF 6935, BNSF 38xx, and CN 2994. If I had known both trains were led by BNSF units, I would have attempted to capture a decent shot of the meet.

CN 2999 and CN 5627
Description:
A CN through freight approaches Harrison St. as it heads south via former SOO rails at Town of Oshkosh, Winnebago Co., WI, on 1 Dec. '20. Train had four locomotives, CN 2999 and CN 5627 pulling as well as CN 2984 and CN 2308 or 2808 mid-train. The former C&NW right-of-way runs parallel to these tracks just out-of-frame to the right. The CN main line transitions from the former SOO to the former C&NW right-of-way at Harrison St. I was standing on Harrison St., in the City of Oshkosh, but the train is traversing an isolated, pitiful scrap of the Town of Oshkosh.

CN 3800 and CN 3082
Description:
A CN through freight traverses the west leg of the wye as it prepares to set out and pick up cars at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 4 Apr. '20. On the far side of the train lies Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye, which runs along the other side of the train.

CN 3805, et al.
Description:
A CN container train crosses over from the former SOO main line to a remnant of the former C&NW main line, now relegated to a passing siding, and approaches Kampo Rd. as it heads southwest at Neenah, WI on 19 Jun. '18. Train had two locomotives, CN 3805 and GECX 2039 (or maybe CREX 2039). Neenah Foundry Plant 2 & Plant 3 are partially visible background right. Plant 2 opened in 1960 and Plant 3 was built in 1967. Plant 1 opened in 1918 and stood about a mile to the north, until it was closed in 1994 and eventually demolished. In the background at left, you can see the tail end of a through freight halted on the main line. The W. Cecil St. overpass (Timothy Hamblin Bridge) can be seen in the background.

Description:
A CN container train crosses Kampo Rd. and approaches the W. Bell St. overpass as it heads southwest via a remnant of the former C&NW main line, now relegated to a passing siding, at Neenah, WI on 19 Jun. '18. Train had two locomotives, CN 3805 and GECX 2039. To the right of the lead locomotive are the remnants of a spur for the two warehouses to the right, but the turnout that connected them to the siding has been gone for years. A new turnout rests between the two sets of tracks by Kampo Rd. It will soon replace an existing turnout which is used to service Neenah's Southpark Industrial Center from the former C&NW passing siding. The former SOO main line is at left. Neenah Foundry Plant 2 & Plant 3 can be seen in the background. Plant 2 opened in 1960 and Plant 3 was built in 1967. CN 3806 and CN 3116
Description:
A CN through freight parallels W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd. and approaches the station sign as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Stroebe, WI on 10 Nov. '19. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016). The former SOO rails run parallel to the right. Modern maps tend to omit the W. from W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd. for some reason, it is also absent on the current street sign. Some old maps include the W., some old maps omit the W.

CN 3826 and CN 3820
Description:
A CN train parallels Union St. and passes the former Sherry St. grade crossing as it heads south past the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 23 Jul. '23. The train was passing a halted northbound train and had three locomotives, CN 3826 and CN 3820 pulling, as well as CN 2894 mid-train. The historic Murer House, 432 Sherry St., is partially visible above the trains. It was built by Felix Murer in 1892 and is currently home to Sherry Town Station. The WC (later SOO) depot stood on the opposite side of Sherry St. from that building; it was built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard, built by WC in 1882. The historic Neenah Stove Works, currently occupied by Hafemeister Machine Corp., 635 Main St., and International Children's Fund, 619 Main St., is partially visible through the trees at right. Description:
After setting out and picking up some cars, the motive power of a CN through freight emerges from the north end of the former SOO yard to reassemble its train at the former Adams St. grade crossing at Neenah, WI on 2 Jun. '19. Adams St. was originally Washington St., until at least 1913. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St. used to be the yard. I don't know when the current yard (a few blocks to the south) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard here.

'19. Adams St. was originally Washington St., until at least 1913. The historic Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility, 434 Sherry St., is partially visible in the background at left. It was built in 1902 after the original 1892 building was destroyed by fire and is currently used for storage. The historic Murer House, 432 Sherry St., is partially visible to the right of that. It was built by Felix Murer in 1892 and is currently home to Sherry Town Station. The WC (later SOO) depot stood on the opposite side of Sherry St. from those two buildings; it was built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest. The Main St. overpass is partially visible in the background at left. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St. used to be the yard. CN 3149 and CN 3828
Description:
A CN container train approaches the Winneconne Ave. overpass as it heads northeast through the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 29 Mar.'20. Train had two locomotives, CN 3149 and CN 3828. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, the corporate overlords didn’t want to spend any money to update the plant. It stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished. The front door was located just out-of-frame to the right.

A CN through freight passes the depot/yard office (to left) and crosses W. 2nd St. while headed northeast past the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 16 Dec. '18. Carter's Caboose, 1428 W. 2nd St., a small, old, rail side tavern, stands to the right. It dates to at least 1930, when it was a soft drink establishment owned by Hubert J. Merkel and August F. Brandt (Prohibition was still in effect). By ’36 it was a tavern operated by Albert Giesen, owned by Mrs. Gretchen Merkel. By ’38 it was Bob’s Tavern, still owned by Mrs. Merkel. It was the Junction Tavern from at least ’43-’71, still owned by Mrs. Merkel until at least ’60 (there were at least two different owners between ’67-’71). At some point in the ‘70s it became Pete’s Junction (possibly Palomino Pete’s Junction). It was called Netticoat Junction ca. the ‘90s (owned by Joanne M. ‘Nettie’ Nett).

First Presbyterian Church, 200 S. Church St., can be seen above the warehouse. The clock tower of the once impressive 1888 city hall building, intersection of S. Commercial St. and W. Doty St., looks like a church steeple from this perspective, but it is a block east of the church.

The building at left, 716 Harrison St., once used by Neenah Foundry, I believe, is in the process of being spruced up with a fresh coat of paint and some new doors (they have gotten to this end yet, obviously). The Main St. overpass is in the background. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard.
