Title:
CN 2859, CN 3201, CN 3179
Description:
A CN through freight parallels Hwy. 41 and passes the Hwy. G overpass as it heads southwest via former SOO rails at Snells, WI on 30 Aug. '19. Snells is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. A Post Office was established on 4 May 1876, originally called Snell’s Station, sometimes referred to as Snell’s Crossing. This once small, rural community included a depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. It does not look like any substantial remnants of the community remain, even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone (it is not a station on the CN system map). Train had three locomotives, CN 2859, CN 3201, CN 3179. A remnant of the former C&NW main line runs parallel along the other side of the train.

BNSF 5846 and CN 2860
Description:
CN through freight crosses the frozen Wolf River via the former SOO bridge as it heads southeast at Gills Landing, WI on 24 Feb. '15. The bridge was built as a swing bridge in 1894. A significant mechanical failure left the pivot inoperable from 2003 until the fall of 2011, when it was converted into a vertical lift bridge. According to bridgehunter.com, it “is likely the only vertical-lift bridge in the world with a center lift tower”.

CN 2860, CN 2898, et al.
Description:
A CN through freight passes the Main St. overpass as it traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 8 Jun. '19. Train had four locomotives, CN 2860, CN 2898, CN 7027, IC 9614. The white building partially visible at left is, or was, Progressive Paper Storage, Inc. (formerly Kimberly-Clark Warehouse (K-C Warehouse)), 135 Millview Dr. It does not receive rail service, but it looks like there may have been a spur on the northwest side of the building in the past.

First Presbyterian Church, 200 S. Church St., can be seen above the second locomotive. The clock tower of the once impressive 1888 city hall building, intersection of S. Commercial St. and W. Doty St., looks like a church steeple from this perspective, but it is a block east of the church. Several of Neenah's hideous, modern eyesores, posing as architecture, pollute the majority of the skyline.

CN 2861 and CN 2892
Description:
CN unit train of 2-bay covered hoppers approaches the Main St. overpass as it rolls past a halted mixed freight on the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 27 Sep. '15. The large Clearwater Paper Corp. mill (originally Lakeside Paper Co., most commonly known as Kimberly-Clark’s Lakeview Mill), which receives rail service, looms background left. The partially demolished Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant) is visible in the background. Opened in Jan. '98, it has stood idle since 15 Jun. '13. The rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties, next to the 5th and 6th covered hoppers, rest atop the remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened.

CN 2861, CN 3276, et al.
Description:
A CN through freight parallels Union St. as it backs into the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 6 Jun. '20. Train had three locomotives, CN 3059, CN 2861, CN 3276. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here.

A CN through freight parallels Union St. as it backs into the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 6 Jun. '20. Train had three locomotives, CN 3059, CN 2861, CN 3276. A couple of interesting old buildings can be seen in the background to the left. The near one is currently home to The Workers, LLC, 348 Smith St., “dealers/distributors of many types of food processing and packaging equipment as well as the supplies associated with that equipment.” The building was erected in 1927 and previously housed Alferi Laboratories, Inc. The far one is currently home to Interfaith Christian Assembly, 344 Smith St. The building was erected in 1929 and previously housed the Sawyer Paper Co., a paper dealer/wholesaler. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. CN 3059, CN 2861, CN 3276
Description:
A CN through freight parallels Union St. and passes the former Sherry St. grade crossing as it backs into the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 6 Jun. '20. The historic Murer House, 432 Sherry St., stands to the left. It was built by Felix Murer in 1892 (construction commenced the previous year). It was briefly (ca. 1893) known as the Northern Pacific Hotel, almost certainly a reference to the short-lived corporate relationship between the WC and NP railroads. It was owned by Joe Mayer [Meyer] ca. 1907, still known as the Murer House (likely Joseph A. Mayer). It was owned by Ole M. Lyken by 1914, it was known as the Lyken Hotel ca. 1920. Circa 1923-24 it was a grocery store owned by Mrs. Mary E. Lyken, Ole’s widow (he passed away in ’23). From at least 1928 until 1939, it was the Mayerl Grocery, owned by Mayme Mayerl. At some point it was turned into a tavern and is currently home to Sherry Town Station. Previous names of the bar include (in no particular order), Susie’s Trackside, Chesapeake Pub, Gigi’s, Mychal’s Bar (Mychal’s On Sherry Street), Sit and Sip Tavern, et al. The historic Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility, 434 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond the train. It was built in 1902 after the original 1892 building was destroyed by fire and is currently used for storage. The parking lot to the left was the site of the WC (later SOO) depot, built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1881 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here.

CN through freight traverses the west leg of the wye as it backs into the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 6 Jun. '15. Little Lake Butte des Morts and the former C&NW bridge, now the Friendship Trail (often referred to as the Trestle Trail), are visible in the background. The defunct and partially demolished Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant) is on the right. Opened in Jan. '98, it has stood idle since 15 Jun. '13. The demolition has been on hold for a several weeks due to a contract dispute between the owner and the demolition contractor.

CN through freight passes the Main St. overpass and takes the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 13 Sep. '16. The train had stopped to set out or pick up a cut of cars and was reassembling its train, preparing to continue on its way. It is approaching the remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot, the rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties (to the right of the locomotives) rest atop the foundation. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. The remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot are near the right edge of the photograph. There are rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties stacked upon it. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. The City of Neenah has conveniently placed a park bench here in Arrowhead Park so rail fans can watch trains go by.

Description:
CN through freight crosses the frozen Rat River and bisects the Rat River Wildlife Area as it speeds northwest via the former SOO rails at Medina Junction, WI on 25 Jan. '15. I was not quite in the position I wanted when this train came roaring by; in my haste I advanced one-too-many increments of the zoom. I like this photograph, but I would like it more if the nose of the trailing locomotive was in frame. One advantage of enduring our wonderful winter weather, the frozen water affords shots that would otherwise require hip-waders or a skiff.

CN 2873
Description:
A northbound CN container train passes the depot/yard office and the sad remnants of the former C&NW yard at Oshkosh, WI on 22 Jan. '17. Train had two locomotives, CN 3022 pulling and CN 2873 mid-train. The depot/yard office sits at the approximate location of the C&NW's South Oshkosh depot, a smaller, plainer structure than their once ornate Oshkosh depot which still stands less than a mile to the north. Historically, everything south of the Fox River was once known as South Oshkosh. The C&NW South Oshkosh depot was saved from demolition, but its current fate is unknown to me. I have seen post-relocation photographs of it on the internet, but they do not reveal its precise location. Some references state it was moved to downtown Oshkosh, others state it was moved to a park in Oshkosh. If it still survives, I have not found it yet. The yard was torn up in Aug. '16. There had been no cars spotted here since at least 31 Jan. '16. They did leave the passing siding and team track.

Description:
A CN through freight passes the Main St. overpass and approaches the former Sherry St. grade crossing while heading south at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 1 May '19. Train had two locomotives, CN 2874 pulling and CN 2833 mid-train. The WC (later SOO) depot stood on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks. It was built in 1891, to replace the ca. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard here.
