CN 3029, CN 2856
Title:  CN 3029, CN 2856
Description:  A CN through freight parallels Broad St. as it rounds a slight curve and approaches Waugoo Ave. while headed southwest via former C&NW rails at Oshkosh, WI on 24 Dec. '16. Train had three locomotives, CN 3029, CN 2856, ?? 2982. The former C&NW depot is partially visible in the background. Built by the Chicago firm of Clark & Fuller in 1884 on Broad St. between Washington Ave. and Merritt Ave. at a cost $15,000, it opened on 1 Dec. ’84. The last passenger train, the Peninsula “400,” departed on 31 Jun. ’71. Currently used by Clarity Care. I was hoping to get a full view of the south end of the depot in the shot, but the camera’s automatic focus feature did not do its job at the exact moment I hoped it would.

CN 3030, UP 5316, BNSF 4573, CN 2530
Title:  CN 3030, UP 5316, BNSF 4573, CN 2530
Description:  A pair of CN trains meet on the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 18 Aug. '18. Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill, lies beyond the trains. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye, partially visible between the lead locomotives. At right, a large quantity of fill is being added to the eastern half of the park, in preparation of future improvements. The Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant) dominated the eastern half of the landfill from its opening in Jan. '98 until demolition was completed in the spring of '16. The former C&NW bridge, now part of the Friendship Trail (often erroneously referred to as the Trestle Trail), can be seen in the background. The Roland Kampo Bridge, a.k.a. the Polish Connection, can be seen beyond that. The foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot can be seen beyond the dumpsters at left. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. Train to the right was backing into the yard to set out and pick up cars and had two locomotives. Train to the left was just passing through.

CN 3034
Title:  CN 3034
Description:  A CN container train crosses over from the former SOO rails to the former C&NW rails as it heads southwest at Neenah, WI on 30 Mar. '18. Train had two locomotives, CN 3034 and CN 3002. Components for a new turnout rest at left. Given that the sun light was neutral, I was hoping to photograph a train approaching Kampo Rd. from the northeast on the main line, for a change. That angle wouldn't be much good on a sunny afternoon, when I am usually over that way. I positioned myself here when I noticed a train approaching, only to be foiled once again by the crafty crew members of the CN.

The CN microwave tower in the background also stands at the southern Sherman Rd. grade crossing; it stands between the former SOO main line and the former C&NW right-of-way, which runs parallel on the other side of the tree line at right. Description:  A CN through freight crosses N. Lake St. as it heads southeast via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 15 Dec. '18. At left, a very enthusiastic, young railfan (with his parent or guardian) records the train with his cellular telephone. Just out-of-frame to the left, a unit train of bi-level autoracks waits to head northwest. Eggers Industries, 164 N. Lake St., an active rail customer, is partially visible at right. Founded at Neenah, WI, in 1910 as Hardwood Products Co., construction of the facility commenced in Oct. ’10. It was renamed Hardwood Products Corp. as a result of a merger with Mississippi Veneer & Lumber Co. on 20 Apr. ’22 (the latter company was formed by the same businessmen who founded the Neenah company). Eggers Industries acquired Hardwood Products Corp. in 1965 and renamed it Eggers Hardwood Products Corp. Eggers was founded by Fred W. Eggers at Two Rivers, WI in 1884 to make wood baskets used by farmers. They later started making plywood and other wood veneer products. There used to be 3 spurs to service the facility, now there is only 1. Train had three locomotives, CN 3037 and CREX 1519 pulling and CN 2934 mid-train.

The depot is currently used by Clarity Care. I used to think that this depot replaced the older MLS&W depot which stood at Warren St. and Jay St. (both streets no longer exist but the site was southwest of the intersection of Pearl Ave. and Jackson St.), because the MLS&W was a subsidiary of the C&NW. I recently learned that both roads operated independently in Oshkosh until at least 1893, when the MLS&W was completely absorbed by the C&NW. In fact, the MLS&W also built a new stone depot in Oshkosh in 1894, to replace their older, wooden depot. Some references state, erroneously, that this depot replaced the C&NW's South Oshkosh depot. However, the C&NW operated both depots for years after this one was completed.

Train had three locomotives, CN 3041 and UP 5421 pulling as well as CN 3084 pushing. The north leg of the wye can be seen in the foreground. The front facade of the remaining portion of the Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility, 434 Sherry St., is visible under the overpass, beyond the bridge pier. It was built in 1902 after the original building, constructed by Nicholas Simon in 1892, was destroyed in a fire. The WC (later SOO) depot stood on this side of that facility; it was built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1881 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye (just out-of-frame to the right). The Winneconne Ave. overpass can be seen in the background.

Title:  CN 3041, et al.
Description:  A CN through freight, with a string of flatcars loaded with MoW equipment, passes the Main St. overpass and leans into the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 11 May '19. Train was slowing in order to prepare to set out and pick up cars and had two locomotives, CN 3041 and EMDX 1606. The north leg of the wye is partially visible at left. The remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot can be seen near the center of the photograph. The rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties rest atop the remnants of the foundation. The masonry depot was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. The Edward Smith Octagon House, 347 Smith St., is partially visible under the overpass at right. The house was erected between 1851 and 1854. Edward Smith, who operated a flour mill and had an early interest in the Neenah Paper Co., purchased the home in 1855. It has been owned by the Neenah Historical Society since 1993.

CN 3041 and EMDX 1606
Title:  CN 3041 and EMDX 1606
Description:  A CN through freight, with a string of flatcars loaded with MoW equipment, passes the station sign as it heads northeast via former SOO rails at Shawano Junction, Fox Crossing (originally Town of Menasha until 14 Apr. '16), Winnebago Co., WI on 11 May '19. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. The locomotives are about to pass that turnout and transition to the former C&NW rails to head for Green Bay, WI. It sure was nice of the railroad to complete some much-needed brush clearing along the tracks here so that train nuts like me can capture better views of their trains. Unfortunately, it also reveals the garbage dumped here illegally by lazy, stupid, inconsiderate 21st Century Americans, like the stack of tires at left or the TVs near the signal relay case. The telephone pole in the background at left stands along the former C&NW right-of-way.

Description:  A CN through freight passes the Main St. overpass and traverses the west leg of the wye as it prepares to set out and pick up cars at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 23 May '20. The white building partially visible at left is, or was, Progressive Paper Storage, Inc. (formerly Kimberly-Clark Warehouse (K-C Warehouse)), 135 Millview Dr. It does not receive rail service, but it looks like there may have been a spur on the northwest side of the building in the past. First Presbyterian Church, 200 S. Church St., can be seen above the cab of the lead locomotive. The clock tower of the once impressive 1888 city hall building, intersection of S. Commercial St. and W. Doty St., looks like a church steeple from this perspective, but it is a block east of the church.
