Title:  GTW 4928
Description:  CN local crosses Washington St. after servicing Chemtrade (formerly General Chemical Corp.) via former C&NW rails on Doty Island at Menasha, WI on 17 Nov. '17. The awesome, old building at left is currently home to Expert Driveline Truck & Auto Repair, 216 Washington St. Built in '35 for Verbrick's Service Co., Norbert F. Verbrick, proprietor; it operated as such until '84. Designed by Henry Auler in the Tudor Revival style, it and the adjacent building at 214 Washington St. (originally offices of Northwest Electrolyte and Engraving, also designed by Auler in the Tudor Revival style), partially visible above the rear of the locomotive, were erected on what had long been a stave yard for the Menasha Wooden Ware Co., currently known as Menasha Corp. When the building was constructed in '35, then Washington Ave. was also Hwy. 41.

Description:  A CN through freight and a CN local meet along Harrison St. at the southwest end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 29 Dec. '18. Through freight had three locomotives, CN 3823 and CN 3111 pulling as well as CN 2818 mid-train. Local had one locomotive, GTW 4928. A remnant of the former C&NW main line runs parallel on the other side of the train. Neenah Foundry Plant 2 & Plant 3 are partially visible beyond the local. Plant 2 opened in 1960 and Plant 3 was built in 1967. Plant 1 opened in 1918 and stood about a mile to the north, until it was closed in 1994 and eventually demolished.

Description:  A CN local services Galloway Co., Inc., via former C&NW rails at Neenah, WI, on 8 Jan. '19. The runaround to the left and the derail were constructed ca. Sep. '14. TILX 519168 rests on what used to be the C&NW main line through Neenah and Menasha, but this portion of that line now ends here. The facility was started in 1927 at 601 S. Commercial St. as Neenah Milk Products, Galloway took it over in 1955. The facility has been expanded over the old right-of-way since the rails were pulled up.

Title:  GTW 4930
Description:  A CN local crosses Mud Creek via the former SOO timber trestle bridge as it heads northeast at Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016) on 20 Feb. '21. The train is shaking some clumps of snow from the bridge. I was standing in the shadow of the former C&NW bridge, also in use by CN. The longer, center span of the SOO bridge consists of several steel I-beams; the remainder of the bridge is constructed of wood. I didn't see a builder’s plate, but there is a small stencil stating "Painted 1960." Metal walkways and handrails were added when the deck was replaced in '17, or maybe it was '16. Local was headed for Shawano with 6 or 7 cars.

Description:  A CN local crosses W. Capitol Dr. and passes a neat, old barn and concrete silo as it heads northwest with 9 cars via former C&NW rails at Town of Grand Chute, Outagamie Co., WI, on 7 Mar. '21. The farmstead dates to at least 1882, but I’m not sure if the barn does. It does not appear to be an active farm. This locomotive would pass this same spot exactly five hours later, when it was headed in the opposite direction.

Kronser Hotel & Saloon, stands at left. Built by Joseph A. Kronser in 1897, it is currently home to Greenville Station (formerly Bootleggers). Several references erroneously state that the building dates to 1887. The original hotel was erected in that year, but it burned down and the current facility was erected in its place. Some references also claim that the building has been called Greenville Station for over 100 years, but that too is an exaggeration.

Description:  A CN local crosses Givens Rd. as it heads northwest with 9 cars via former C&NW rails at Town of Hortonia, Outagamie Co., WI, on 7 Mar. '21. I was standing in Hortonville, the train was in Hortonia. The facility partially visible at right used to be part of the GripTite nail factory, I believe. The facility does not presently benefit from rail service, but it used to. It has been sub-divided and currently houses multiple businesses. I'm not sure if this portion is still used by Honey Bee Ware or not. The business changed hands a while back.

Description:  A CN local passes the station sign and approaches S. Nash St./Hwy. M (originally Oshkosh St.) as it heads southeast with 6 cars via former C&NW rails at Hortonville, WI, on 7 Mar. '21. I believe that the depot stood a little closer to S. Nash St./Hwy. M than the station sign currently does. It is difficult to believe that there used to be five tracks here. To the right stands the historic Peter Olk’s Elevator (a.k.a. Olk’s Elevator) at 136 W. Dewey St. The oldest part of the facility dates to at least 1894, when it was the W. L. Root Grain & Potato Warehouse. A 10,000-bushel elevator was added to the facility in 1908, about the time that Olk acquired it. A couple of other additions have been erected since then. Circa ‘10, Peter Olk was a “dealer in grain, flour, feed, salt, lime and cement.” In ‘34 the facility became the home of Schneider Multifeed (a purveyor of feed for livestock and pets), and operated as such until at least 2006. Black Otter Supply is the facility’s most recent, if not current, occupant (a bird seed store). Another historic facility is partially visible in the background. The Wisconsin Grain and Malt Co. also dates to at least 1894. It was later acquired by the Western Elevator Co. and became the Miller Grain & Fuel Co. in 1909. It was used by the neighboring Schneider Elevator ca. 1968.

Description:  GTW 4930 crosses S. Mason St. while headed southwest via CN, former C&NW, rails at Appleton, WI, on 25 Mar. '21. I haven't learned why one side of the bridge is lower than the other, but I have discovered why one side is wider than the other. An old photograph reveals that the right (northbound) lane of S. Mason St. once accommodated a streetcar track and a lane for motor vehicle traffic simultaneously. You can also see that the bridge abutments and piers were designed to support two tracks, but I don't believe this area was ever double-tracked.

Description:  A CN local traverses the west leg of the wye as it heads northwest via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI, on 26 Nov. '20. The local is passing the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. On the far side of the train lies Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye, which is hidden on the other side of the train. The Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant) used to dominate the background, from its opening in Jan. '98 until demolition was completed in the spring of '16. The corporate headquarters of Plexus, 1 Plexus Way, can be seen in the background to the right. The P. H. Glatfelter Co. paper mill occupied that site for 135 years, the oldest part of the original mill was constructed in 1874. Glatfelter purchased the mill from Bergstrom Paper Co. in 1979. Bergstrom had purchased the mill, originally Winnebago Paper, in 1904. Glatfelter moved the jobs to Ohio in June 2006, the mill stood idle for about two years until it was torn down, demolition was completed in May 2009.

I previously thought this depot had been built by the MLS&W ca. 1872. Some references state or suggest it could be the original depot built when the railroad was incorporated. However, the Sanborn maps reveal that this masonry depot was built between 1887 and 1894 to replace the earlier framed depot. If it was built prior to 1 Sep. '93, it was built by the MLS&W. If it was built after that date, it was C&NW. A couple of awkward additions were constructed after the railroad stopped using it. It is/was used by Holiday House of Manitowoc County, Inc. They have a newer facility, not sure if they still use this or not. The C&NW built a new depot about a mile to the west in 1945, but that one no longer exists.

Title:  GTW 4933, et al.
Description:  A CN train crosses S. 14th St. as it heads southwest with 23 3-bay covered hoppers at Manitowoc, WI, on 20 Aug. '23. Who’s the doofus who left their video camera and tripod fouling my shot? Oh wait, that was me. I intended to shoot this train as it ran along Franklin St., but two other camera-equipped railfans beat me to it. I didn’t want to foul their shot, so I shot the depot.

GTW 5851 and GTW 4933
Title:  GTW 5851 and GTW 4933
Description:  A CN train approaches Towmen Rd. as it transitions from the former SOO rails to the former C&NW rails as it heads northeast at Shawano Junction, Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016) on 10 Feb. '24. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails.

I don't know what its last primary function was, but it was labeled as an ice house on the 1913 Sanborn map.
