Title:  HLCX 1070
Description:  A FV&LS (or FOXY) train crosses S. Nash St./Hwy. M (originally Oshkosh St.) as it heads northwest with 9 cars via former CN, historically C&NW, rails at Hortonville, WI, on 27 Mar. ‘25. Train was headed for New London. The train is about to pass the historic Schwebs’ Hotel, built across the tracks from the depot in 1877. It was later renamed Hotel Jungmann, later Hotel Hoffman. It is currently home to the Black Otter Supper Club, 503 S. Nash St. I have not eaten there myself, but everyone I know who has says it is great. One of these days I will have to check it out for myself.

GTW 4901
Title:  GTW 4901
Description:  A CN train parallels W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd. and passes the station sign as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Stroebe, WI, on 28 Feb. '25. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016 (not Outagamie Co., where Stroebe was erroneously placed on this site)). The former SOO rails, also in use by CN, run parallel to the right. Modern maps tend to omit the W. from W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd. for some reason, it is also absent on the current street sign. Some old maps include the W., some old maps omit the W.

Title:  AMTK 345, et al.
Description:  AMTK Train 8, ‘Empire Builder,’ crosses N. Spring St. as it arrives at the CP, former MILW, depot (out-of-frame to the left) at Columbus, WI, as it heads southeast on 27 Feb. '25. Train had two locomotives, AMTK 345 and AMTK 305. Consist included AMTK 61047, AMTK 39031, AMTK 32086, AMTK 32069, AMTK 38067, AMTK 34114, AMTK 38043, AMTK 34031, AMTK 31045, AMTK 32050. Designed in the Italianate style, it was constructed of lumber with brick veneer by the M&StP in 1871. When the current depot was built in 1906, this became the freight house. I don't know when the railroad stopped using it, but it obviously became part of the Caldwell Lumber Co. quite a while ago. The company, originally known as Mair and Caldwell, started when R. J. Caldwell and William Mair purchased the Brittingham and Hixon Lumber Co. The depot is currently used by Vita Plus.

HLCX 3841
Title:  HLCX 3841
Description:  A FV&LS (or FOXY) train crosses W. Spencer St. as it pulls 8 cars south at Appleton Junction, WI, on 31 Jan. '25. I'm not sure who laid these rails, they formed an interchange between the former C&NW yard (out-of-frame to the right) and the former SOO yard (out-of-frame to the left). The FV&LS inherited both yards from the CN. The tracks form the border between Appleton (far side) and the Town of Grand Chute (near side). There is a simple memorial attached to the railing at the center of the bridge. Sadly, Betty Rolf was murdered here on 7 Nov. '88. Unsolved for nearly 36 years, on 21 May '24 Gene Meyer was convicted for murdering her.

Description:  A FV&LS (or FOXY) train crosses the junction with the former C&NW right-of-way, now the Mountain-Bay State Trail, as it heads southeast via former CN, historically SOO, rails at Shawano, WI, on 31 Jan. '25. The red brick interlocking tower that guarded the junction stood to the right, south of SOO tracks and east of C&NW tracks, until it was torn down circa 1995. I thought the tower stood by the clump of trees to the left, but a review of others' photographs on rrpicturearchives.net as well as some old maps has proven that my recollection of the tower's location was erroneous.

Description:  A FV&LS (or FOXY) train crosses Hwy. MM as it prepares to switch Shawano Specialty Papers (div. of Little Rapids Corp.) via former CN, historically C&NW, rails at West Shawano, WI, on 31 Jan. '25. Founded as the Wolf River Paper & Fiber Co. on 7 Feb. 1894, the name was changed to Shawano Paper Mills ca. Nov. ‘49. The facility was leased to Little Rapids Pulp Co. (later Little Rapids Corp.) in Feb. ’50, they purchased the facility on 25 Jun. ’55. The name changed to Little Rapids Corp.-Shawano Mill in ‘93, but it was still commonly referred to as Shawano Paper Mill. The area around the mill, which includes some former company houses, used to be referred to as West Shawano. It was labelled as such in the '11 county atlas (Upham & Russell Cos. Plat and Riverview Addition), the '20 township map, and the name still appears on some official property records. The paper mill stands along an approximately 2-mile scrap of the former C&NW mainline which once ran 83 miles from Green Bay to Wausau (this is the only active remnant outside of those two cities). That former main line is now the Mountain-Bay State Trail. It is an awesome bicycle ride, but I (obviously) would prefer to see trains running on it.
