Album Info:Most of the photographs in this album were captured in Northeast Wisconsin in the winter of 2016, so they are mostly CN operating on former C&NW, GB&W, MILW, and SOO rails. Once in a while I try to catch ELS and WSOR on former MILW rails too.

Description:  CN local waits on the siding along W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd. as a CN through freight heads southwest via former C&NW rails at Milepost 211 at Stroebe, WI on 31 Dec. '15. The local was headed for Appleton, Little Chute and Kaukauna and had two locomotives, CN 4788 and GTW 4924. I don't know the through freight's origin or destination, but it had one locomotive, CN 2512.

Description:  CN mixed freight crosses the frozen Rat River via the former SOO bridge and bisects the Rat River Wildlife Area as it speeds southeast at Medina Junction, WI on 23 Jan. '16. Train had five locomotives, CN 2245, BNSF 7501, BNSF 8474, CN 5552, CN 2344(?). I did not anticipate 5 locomotives, if I had I would have attempted to gain a vantage point from which I might have captured all of them in 1 frame.

Title:  CN 2909, et al.
Description:  A southbound CN tank car unit train passes the yard office in an unusually empty former C&NW yard at Oshkosh, WI on 10 Feb. '16. Normally this view of the facility is blocked by the cars in the yard. I've never seen this yard completely empty. The building on the right sits at the approximate location of the C&NW's South Oshkosh depot, a smaller, plainer structure than their once ornate Oshkosh depot which still stands less than a mile to the north. Historically, everything south of the Fox River was once known as South Oshkosh. The C&NW South Oshkosh depot was saved from demolition, but its current fate is unknown to me. I have seen post-relocation photographs of it on the internet, but they do not reveal its precise location. Some references state it was moved to downtown Oshkosh, others state it was moved to a park in Oshkosh. If it still survives, I have not found it yet. Train had three locomotives, CN 2811 and CN 2873 pulling, as well as CN 2909 pushing.

Description:  Looking northwest at the CN, former SOO, bridge over the frozen Mud Creek at Town of Menasha, WI on 12 Feb. '16. I was hoping to photograph the local to Shawano on the bridge, unfortunately the train did not cooperate. I was standing under the former C&NW bridge, which I photographed last winter and can be seen at http://brusstp515.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=4144567.

Description:  CN local passes behind the corporate headquarters of Plexus and skirts Arrowhead Park as it heads southwest via the former joint MILW/SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 17 Feb. '16. Plexus stands on the site of the former P. H. Glatfelter Co. paper mill, which stood here for 135 years, the oldest part of the original mill was constructed in 1874. Glatfelter purchased the mill from Bergstrom Paper Co. in 1979. Bergstrom had purchased the mill, originally Winnebago Paper, in 1904. Glatfelter moved the jobs to Ohio in June 2006, the mill stood idle for about two years until it was torn down, demolition was completed in May 2009.

Description:  CN through freight passes the Main St. over pass and traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard as it heads northwestward past Arrowhead Park at Neenah, WI on 20 Feb. '16. The remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot are behind the locomotives. There are rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties stacked upon it. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened.

Description:  CN through freight approaches Towmen Rd. and the turnout for which this location is named as it head northeast via former SOO rails at Shawano Junction in the Town of Menasha, WI on 6 Mar. '16. When the train hits the turnout it will transition over to the C&NW rails. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW mainline through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails.

Description:  CN through freight approaches the Main St. over pass as it traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 6 Mar. '16. The remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot are behind the locomotives. There are rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties stacked upon it. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened.
