Description: |
A CN local parallels and then crosses S. Whitman Ave. as it returns to the former C&NW yard from the former SOO yard at Appleton Junction, WI, on 17 Sep. '21. The middle track was once the MLS&W main line, now it is the north leg of the wye. The lower track is the west leg of the wye. Local had one locomotive, CN 4775. An old caboose is displayed to the left. It is painted as RI 17177 or CRIP 17177. Some references claim it was not their caboose, but MILW. The facility partially visible in the background was occupied by WOW Logistics and PODS Sglf-Storage, 1840 W. Spencer St., Appleton, WI. The WOW Logistics sign notes that the facility is for lease, I haven't noticed any PODS activity lately either. The facility has a spur which has not been used for quite a while. |

CN local approaches the station sign as it pulls 4 cars southward through the former SOO yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 21 Mar. '15. Train was heading back to Neenah after working Shawano. The SOO depot stood a few blocks to the southwest, along W. College Ave., on a long spur that ran south from this main line into downtown Appleton. The depot was razed in 1970 and the spur was pulled up a decade or two after that (although the spur is still depicted on CN's interactive system map). |

CN 4791 + Track Evaluation System |
Description: |
An interesting and unique CN train heads north past the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 24 Oct. '20. Train had one locomotive, CN 4791. Consist included CN 414852 DGRMS Test Car, CN 1057 TEST Track Evaluation System. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, the corporate overlords didn’t want to spend any money to update the plant. It stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished. Galloway Co., Inc., an active rail customer along a remnant of the former C&NW main line, is partially visible in the background to the left. The facility was started in 1927 at 601 S. Commercial St. as Neenah Milk Products, Galloway took it over in 1955. The facility has been expanded over the old right-of-way since some portions of the main line were pulled up. |

CN local crosses the South Channel (Neenah Channel) of the Fox River via former C&NW bridge at Neenah, WI on 3 Jul. '16. Train was preparing to service Neenah Paper, partially visible in the background. The company was founded at Neenah, WI, as the Patten Paper Co. by Azel Wilder Patten in 1873. The original 150’ by 40’ paper mill was built in ‘74 on the former site of the Empire Flour Mill and several smaller businesses. In ‘81, A. W. Patten built a second Patten Paper Co. mill at Appleton, WI. Samuel A. Cook and Frank T. Russell purchased the Neenah mill in early ‘85 and incorporated as the Neenah Paper Co., with A. W. Patten as president. When the original portion of the paper mill was built, 4 other sizeable industries stood between its west wall and Cedar St., now N. Commercial St. Numerous additions were erected over the years as the mill expanded westward and northward (some additions were built on pilings above the Fox River). By ’26, when their Mediterranean Revival-style office building was constructed, they occupied the entire small peninsula east of Commercial St. Neenah Paper Co. officially became a division of Kimberly-Clark Corp. in ‘56, and operated as such until it was spun off in 2004. |
