Title:  HLCX 3880 and HLCX 1037
Description:  A FV&LS (or FOXY) train crosses the Fox River Navigation Canal via the former CN, historically C&NW, swing bridge in 'The Flats' at Appleton, WI, on 22 Mar. ‘22. I haven't noticed a builder's plate, but according to bridgehunter.com, the Warren through truss swing bridge was built in 1908. However, a recent contributor to that site believes it was built after 1919. A photograph caption in the Post-Crescent on 29 May 1974 states that the bridge was "nearly 50 years old." Over the past several years, I have noticed that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Flats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some other variation. For all of my life, the historic, industrial heart of Appleton has been simply ‘The Flats.’ However, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries it was referred to as 'The Water Power.'

Title:  HLCX 3880 and HLCX 1037
Description:  A FV&LS (or FOXY) train, with a particularly unfriendly crew, parallels Garner's Creek and crosses State St. as it prepares to service the Midwest Paper Group mill at Combined Locks, WI, via former CN, historically C&NW, rails on 22 Mar. '22. Founded in 1889 (some references state 1892) as the Combined Locks Paper Co., it became Combined Paper Mills, Inc. in ‘46 after it purchased a paper mill in PA. Acquired by the National Cash Register Co. in ‘69, it was merged with Appleton Coated Paper Co. in ‘71 to form Appleton Papers, Inc. Commonly known as Appleton Papers Locks Mill, it has been controlled by several different domestic and foreign owners over the years. It was separated from Appleton Papers in ‘00 and became Appleton Coated, LLC. Ten members of the mill’s management purchased the facility from France-based Sequana SA on 19 Dec. ’14. Forced into receivership, it was purchased by scrap dealers, Industrial Assets Corp. and Maynards Industries USA, in Oct. ’17. They bought it to shut it down and gut it. By some miracle, they changed their minds and restarted the paper machines. The facility was re-named Midwest Paper Group ca. 19 Apr. ’18. McKinley Paper Co., a subsidiary of Mexico-based Bio PAPPEL, purchased the facility ca. 3 Feb. '22. Unbelievably, this antagonistic train crew reported me the Outagamie Co. Sheriff's Dept. As I was watching them switch the mill, I saw a deputy pull up to a member of the train crew. The crew member pointed to me and then the deputy drove up to me. The friendly and professional deputy rolled down his window and said, "There is some concern down by the mill about what you are doing up here." I told him, "I'm just watching the train." He said, "You're OK. You can keep doing what you're doing." We wished each other a good day, and he drove away. I was standing on a public sidewalk 400' from railroad property. At no point during the brief chase on this day did I set foot off of a public sidewalk or public street.

Description:  A FV&LS (or FOXY) train, with a particularly unfriendly crew, feebly attempts to temporarily spot a boxcar as they service the Midwest Paper Group mill at Combined Locks, WI, via former CN, historically C&NW, rails on 22 Mar. '22. Unfortunately, this crew member failed to adequately set the brakes on this boxcar. As soon as the locomotives uncoupled, the boxcar obediently followed right behind them. It rolled far enough to foul the spur from which they intended to extract several other boxcars. I almost never experience schadenfreude, but in this particular instance, I did. This antagonistic train crew reported me the Outagamie Co. Sheriff's Dept. As I was watching them switch the mill, I saw a deputy pull up to a member of the train crew. There used to be crossing gates at both blue lights.

Title:  HLCX 3880 and HLCX 1037
Description:  A FV&LS (or FOXY) train crosses Hwy. MM as it prepares to switch Shawano Specialty Papers (div. of Little Rapids Corp.) via former CN, historically C&NW, rails at West Shawano, Town of Richmond, Shawano Co., WI, on 25 Nov. '22. The area around the mill, which includes some former company houses, used to be referred to as West Shawano. The name still appears on some official property records. The paper mill stands along an approximately 2-mile scrap of the former C&NW mainline which once ran 83 miles from Green Bay to Wausau (this is the only active remnant outside of those two cities). That former main line is now the Mountain-Bay State Trail. It is an awesome bicycle ride, but I (obviously) would prefer to see trains running on it. The fence to the far right surrounds the paper mill's water treatment facility, which was built upon the former site of the Shawano Brick Yard (a.k.a. Larson Brick Yard). The brick yard (owned by Charles Larson, and later his son Thomas, for most, if not all, of its existence) produced fine white or cream-colored brick from 1891 until 1946. The large facility contained three kilns and its own narrow-gauge railway. The paper mill purchased the property at some point after the brick yard closed and eventually demolished the entire facility, to include the Larson mansion. The paper mill's historic office building was constructed in 1901 of brick from that yard.

Description:  A FV&LS (or FOXY) local crosses the last remaining scrap of what was once the South Channel of the Fox River via former CN, historically C&NW, rails in 'The Flats' at Appleton, WI, on 5 Feb. '22. Old maps reveal that the west end of the South Channel was filled in at some point between 1916 and 1957. Most of the remainder of the South Channel was filled in the following years. This remaining portion forms the confluence with a mill race which connects West’s Power Canal (a.k.a. West’s Canal, a.k.a. Grand Chute Island Canal) to the Fox River. Edward West bought Grand Chute Island and excavated the canal in 1870 to provide water power for the industries which were built soon after. The facility beyond the train is currently home to JWM Coenen Mechanical (historically Allis-Chalmers, originally Valley Iron Works), 401 E. South Island St. The now idled Neenah Paper (formerly Fox River Paper Co.), 600 S. Vulcan St., is partially visible in the background to the right. Neenah Paper closed this facility last year, even though they recently completed a multi-million-dollar addition to the facility. It was the last active rail customer in 'The Flats' and had been for a number of years. Hopefully a new industrial concern will purchase the facility, instead of it being torn down or converted into trendy, over-rated, over-priced apartments. Over the past several years, I have notice that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Flats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some other variation. However, the historic, industrial heart of Appleton is simply ‘The Flats.’ Many years ago it was referred to 'The Water Power.'

Title:  HLCX 1042
Description:  A FV&LS (or FOXY) train hugs the bluff, parallels the Fox River, and passes the S. Memorial Dr. (originally Cherry St.) bridge as it descends the grade into 'The Flats' via former CN, historically C&NW, rails at Appleton, WI, on 6 Mar. '22. Train was headed for Kimberly and Combined Locks. Now just a short branch line, this stretch of rail is a remnant of the MLS&W main line which once ran from Milwaukee to Ashland. The MILW, originally M&N, rails used to cross the river in the foreground. Over the past several years, I have noticed that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Flats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some other variation. For all of my life, the historic, industrial heart of Appleton has been simply ‘The Flats.’ However, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries it was referred to as 'The Water Power.'

Description:  A FV&LS (or FOXY) train hugs the bluff and passes the Vulcan Heritage Park as it descends the grade into 'The Flats' via former CN, historically C&NW, rails at Appleton, WI, on 6 Mar. '22. Train was headed for Kimberly and Combined Locks. Now just a short branch line, this stretch of rail (laid in 1874 (some references state 1875 or 1876)) is a remnant of the MLS&W main line which once ran from Milwaukee to Ashland. The MILW, originally M&N, rails used to run parallel on this side of the tracks (from 1880 until 1981). Most of the land in the foreground was created when the mill race, or power canal, was filled in.

Description:  A FV&LS (or FOXY) train crosses S. Whitman Ave. as it prepares to switch Quality Carriers, 700 S. Whitman Ave., at the northwest corner of the wye at the former CN, originally C&NW, yard at Appleton Junction, WI, on 12 Mar. '22. This track, which is now part of the north leg of the wye, is a remnant of the MLS&W main line which once ran from Milwaukee to Ashland. The facility partially visible in the background to the right is Foremost Farms USA, 1815 W. Spencer St. They had a spur which was removed ca. Sep. '20, it had not been used for quite a while. An old caboose is displayed in the background to the left. It is painted as RI 17177. Some references claim it was not their caboose, but MILW. It is currently for sale. I wish I could afford to purchase it (the price is not listed, but, as the old saying goes, if you have to ask, you can't afford it).

Description:  A FV&LS (or FOXY) train passes the station sign and approaches S. Nash St./Hwy. M (originally Oshkosh St.) as it heads southeast via former CN, historically C&NW, rails at Hortonville, WI, on 13 Mar. '22. It is difficult to believe that there used to be five tracks here. To the right is the historic Schwebs’ Hotel, later Hotel Jungmann, later Hotel Hoffman, currently Black Otter Supper Club, 503 S. Nash St., built in 1877. A pair of historic elevators are partially visible in the background. The near one, Peter Olk’s Elevator (a.k.a. Olk’s Elevator), 136 W. Dewey St., dates to at least 1894. Black Otter Supply is the facility’s most recent, if not current, occupant. The far one stands at 503 S. Mill St. and dates to at least 1890.

Description:  A FV&LS (or FOXY) train passes the joint Agropur and Midland Paper facility as it heads northwest via former CN, historically C&NW, rails at Town of Grand Chute, Outagamie Co., WI, on 13 Nov. '22. It is neat to find a former C&NW locomotive plying former C&NW rails. This was formerly U.S. Paper Converters, until they closed in 2017, eliminating 52-56 jobs, depending on the reference. It appears the facility has been subdivided. The entrance on the east side, 4808 W. Converters Dr., is occupied by Agropur/WOW Logistics. The entrance on the north side, 4826 W. Converters Dr., is occupied by Midland Paper. I'm not sure which occupant receives rail service; it's possible that they both do. I thought this train was going to stop and spot their boxcar here, but they did not.
