NS 1065, et al.
Description:
An interesting trio of out-of-town visitors lead a through freight across Towmen Rd. via CN rails as it transitions from former SOO rails (in the foreground) to former C&NW rails at Shawano Junction, WI on 24 Feb. '18. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. Train had three locomotives, NS 8945, NS 1065, NS 2600.

NS 1065
Description:
An interesting foreign visitor leads a CN through freight across W. 2nd St. as it heads southwest past the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 5 May '18. Carter's Caboose, a small, old, rail side tavern, is partially visible beyond the train at left. It was called Netticoat Junction ca. the '90s and Pete's Junction (possibly Palomino Pete's Junction) ca. the '70s.

NS 1073 and BNSF 8224
Description:
NS's Penn Central heritage unit leads a train southward via CN, former C&NW, rails parallel to S. Main St./Hwy. 45 and the west shore of Lake Winnebago at Oshkosh, WI on 25 Oct. '14. I wish I could have captured a better shot of this unique locomotive during its rare visit to this area, but I barely got out of my truck in time to snap this less-than-ideal shot after chasing the train from Medina Junction.

UP 1983 and UP 8520
Description:
I had a chance to snap a quick photograph of the “Welcome to Texas” and “Welcome to New Mexico” signs during one of my trips from the middle-of-nowhere Fort Bliss to the main cantonment area of the post on 28 Feb. '09. This spot along Hwy. 54 on the TX/NM border is Newman, Otero Co., NM. There just happened to be a long, high-speed container train passing by at the time. Train was headed southwest toward El Paso and had two locomotives, UP 1983 (WP heritage unit) and UP 8520.

CN 8101, CN 2869, and IC 9626
Description:
CN through freight traverses the west leg of the wye as it backs into the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 6 Jun. '15. Little Lake Butte des Morts and the former C&NW bridge, now the Friendship Trail (often referred to as the Trestle Trail), are visible in the background. The defunct and partially demolished Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant) is on the right. Opened in Jan. '98, it has stood idle since 15 Jun. '13. The demolition has been on hold for a several weeks due to a contract dispute between the owner and the demolition contractor.

CN 8101
Description:
CN unit train of tank cars passes the Main St. over pass as it traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 2 Jul. '17. The east leg of the wye is partially visible beyond the train. The white building at left is Progressive Paper Storage, Inc. (formerly Kimberly-Clark Warehouse), 135 Millview Dr. It does not receive rail service, but it looks like there may have been a spur on the northwest side of the building in the past. Train had three locomotives, CN 3019 and CN 2821 pulling as well as CN 8101 pushing.

CN 8101 and BNSF 4290
Description:
A CN through freight passes the Main St. overpass and Arrowhead Park while taking the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 24 Jun. '18. Train had two locomotives, CN 8101 and BNSF 4290. The tank cars at left are parked on the north leg of the wye. The remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot are partially visible to the right of the locomotives. The rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties rest atop the remnants of the foundation. The masonry depot was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened.

CN 3172 and CN 8101
Description:
A CN train passes the Winneconne Ave. overpass as it heads north past the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 11 Mar. '23. The train was preparing to set out and pick up cars at the yard. The overpass was erected ca. 1988 in order to eliminate the busiest grade crossing in the area. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard, built by WC in 1882. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built. A 1909 map shows the yard still here, a 1936 map depicts both the old and new yards.

CN 3172 and CN 8101
Description:
A CN train parallels Union St. and approaches the former Sherry St. grade crossing as it heads north past the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 11 Mar. ‘23. The train was preparing to set out and pick up cars at the yard. The historic Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility, 434 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond the train. It was built in 1902 after the original 1892 building was destroyed by fire and is currently used for storage. The historic Murer House, 432 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond that. It was built by Felix Murer in 1892 and is currently home to Sherry Town Station. The WC (later SOO) depot stood on the opposite side of Sherry St. from those two buildings; it was built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest.

Description:
CN mixed freight crosses the frozen Rat River via the former SOO bridge and bisects the Rat River Wildlife Area as it speeds southeast at Medina Junction, WI on 23 Jan. '16. Train had five locomotives, CN 2245, BNSF 7501, BNSF 8474, CN 5552, CN 2344(?). I did not anticipate 5 locomotives, if I had I would have attempted to gain a vantage point from which I might have captured all of them in 1 frame.

UP 6845 and UP 8482
Description:
An empty coal train idles away on the CN, former C&NW, siding at Stroebe, WI on 12 Aug. '17. Train was returning from Wisconsin Public Service's Pulliam Power Plant, a.k.a. J. P. Pulliam Generating Station, at Green Bay, WI and had three locomotives, UP 6845 and UP 8482 pulling and UP 6368 pushing. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI until 14 Apr. '16 (not Outagamie Co., where Stroebe was erroneously placed on this site)). The train rests amid the ongoing reconstruction of the Hwy. 41/Hwy. 441 (a.k.a. the Tri-County Expressway)/Hwy. 10 interchange (a.k.a. the Polish Connection). The overpass in the background is the connection from westbound Hwy. 10/Hwy. 441 (a.k.a. the Tri-County Expressway) to northbound Hwy. 41. The columns partially visible at left support the new, second bridge to carry eastbound traffic over Little Lake Butte des Morts. The columns partially visible at right support the original Roland Kampo Bridge (being extensively rebuilt) which will now only carry westbound traffic over Little Lake Butte des Morts. The interchange opened to traffic on 30 Nov. '75. When Hwy. 10 was reconstructed and relocated ca. '97, this interchange was not simultaneously reconstructed to form a full interchange, but the ongoing, extensive expansion and reconstruction will make it a full interchange as well as increase traffic capacity.

The white building partially visible at left is, or was, Progressive Paper Storage, Inc. (formerly Kimberly-Clark Warehouse (K-C Warehouse)), 135 Millview Dr. It does not receive rail service, but it looks like there may have been a spur on the northwest side of the building in the past. First Presbyterian Church, 200 S. Church St., can be seen above the warehouse. The clock tower of the once impressive 1888 city hall building, intersection of S. Commercial St. and W. Doty St., looks like a church steeple from this perspective, but it is a block east of the church.

This once small, rural community included a depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. It does not look like any substantial remnants of the community remain, even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone. BNSF 9079 at MERC
Description:
The traveling shiploader for Midwest Energy Resources Company (MERC), Superior, WI, as seen from the Vista Star during Vista Fleet's Grand Sightseeing Tour of the Duluth & Superior Harbor at Duluth, MN on 25 Jun. '16. Underground augers convey the coal from the massive storage pile (out of frame to right) after it is unloaded from the train via a rotary dumping machine. The coal is delivered by 123-car BNSF unit trains, 14,000 tons at a time. UP also brings coal, their trains are likely similar in size and capacity. Some regional customers bring in trucks to pick up their coal. The nose of BNSF 9079, lead unit of a coal train which has just arrived, near the center of the photograph under the maroon metal sheathed conveyor housing which feeds the traveling shiploader. This information comes from the facilities website, http://www.midwestenergy.com/, which includes some interesting videos as well. I was fortunate enough to receive a tour of this impressive facility with a well-known group of like-minded railroad history enthusiasts. The massive General Mills Superior Elevator S is partially visible at left. There are a couple of photographs of that facility in this album which include historical information about it. Additional information about the harbor cruise can be found at http://www.vistafleet.com/.

BNSF 9191 and BNSF 5940
Description:
A pair of out-of-town visitors lead a through freight across Winchester Rd./Hwy. II as they head northwest via former SOO rails at Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, WI until 14 Apr. '16) on 5 Nov. '16. I thought the train was going to take the cross over and roll past me toward Stevens Point, but they faked me out and headed for Green Bay instead. The divergence of rail lines at Winchester Rd., where the line in the foreground heads northwest toward Stevens Point and the other line heads northeast toward Green Bay, is labeled Winnebago Junction on some old maps. The grade crossing in the foreground is Ehlers Rd.
