CN 5246 and CN 5286
Description:
A heavily powered CN local crosses S. Perkins St. as it slows to halt at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 19 Apr. '18. They will drop off some cars here before continuing on to Little Chute and Kaukauna. The after effects of a recent, record breaking, spring snowfall are readily apparent.

CN 5246 and CN 5286
Description:
A heavily powered CN local crosses E. Wisconsin Ave. via the former C&NW bridge as it heads northeast through Appleton, WI on 19 Apr. '18. I am surprised that the FRVR sign remains, unscathed. The identical sign on the opposite side has been damaged due to vandalism. Train was headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna.

CN 5246
Description:
A heavily powered CN local passes Legion Park (on the other side of the train) as it heads northeast with 12 cars via the former C&NW rails at Little Chute, WI on 19 Apr. '18. Train has just finished servicing Nestlé Pizza Division, originally Jack's Pizza, and is now headed for Kaukauna and had two locomotives, CN 5246 and CN 5286. Little Chute's authentic, fully-functional windmill is visible background left. An 1850s design, it was constructed in the Netherlands, disassembled, shipped here, reassembled, and dedicated on 20 Sep. '14.

CN 5246 and CN 5286
Description:
A heavily powered CN local parallels Ehlers Rd. and approaches Towmen Rd. as it heads northeast via former SOO rails at Shawano Junction, WI on 23 Apr. '18. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. The train is about to cross over to the C&NW rails. Train was headed for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna.

BCOL 4652, CN 5261, et al.
Description:
A CN through freight rests along Union St. at the former Sherry St. grade crossing at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 10 Apr. '20. Train had five locomotives, CN 2246, IC 2718, CN 8002, BCOL 4652, CN 5261. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here.

CN 2984, GECX 2038, CN 5273
Description:
A CN through freight parallels Ehlers Rd. and approaches Towmen Rd. as it heads northeast via former SOO rails at Shawano Junction, Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016) on 9 May. '20. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. The train is transitioning to the former C&NW rails. Some work is under way to prepare for the installation of some brand new signals. In a few days a shiny, new signal relay case will be installed next to this awesome old one. Unfortunately, evidence of some illegal dumping can also be seen.

CN 5286
Description:
A CN local bisects the intersection of W. College Ave./Hwy. 125 with S. Memorial Dr./N. Richmond St./Hwy. 47 (probably the busiest intersection, consequently busiest grade crossing, in Appleton) as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 5 May '18. The interesting brick building behind the train is Good Company, a restaurant established in 1980. The building was built between 1895 and '01 by the Marshall Paper Co., a.k.a. Marshall Bros. Wholesale Paper or Marshall Bros. Paper. The company was founded in '93 by Simon and Samuel G. Marshall, father and son. It initially operated across Richmond St. at the Marshall & Hammel grain facility (Simon was a partner in that company) until the current building was completed. Samuel's brothers Louis J. and Harry M. later joined the company, whose products included wrapping paper and printing paper. It used to receive rail service, the spur was on the north (far) side of the building. That spur crossed Richmond St. and serviced the Marshall & Hammel Grain Elevator & Warehouse that stood where the Walgreen's parking lot is now. Louis J., the last surviving brother, sold the company when he retired in 1942.

CN 5286
Description:
A CN local bisects the intersection of W. Franklin St. and N. Division St. as it heads southwest via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 5 May '18. The facility at left is the former Furnishings Unlimited warehouse. The historic address of the facility is 323 N. Clark St. The current business address is 311 N. Superior St.; the address probably changed after an addition was added to the northeast end of the facility after 1981. The building was likely erected by the Cohen Bros. Fruit Co., after a natural gas explosion destroyed their previous facility ca. 10 Sep. 1948. Furnishings unlimited acquired the facility in or prior to ‘81. The building had painted signs for Cohen Bros. and Sunkist until at least ‘81. The facility used to receive rail service, but it hasn't for quite some time. The most recent occupant is, or was, Appleton Furniture Direct. The building in the background is Oneida Heights, 525 N. Oneida St., an apartment complex for seniors. It was built upon the site of several historic, rail served industries near the site of the C&NW depot. Train was headed back to Neenah after working Little Chute and Kaukauna.

Description:
A CN local passes Intertape Polymer Group (IPG), 741 4th St., Menasha, WI, and approaches De Pere St. (the current street signs have been lazily bastardized to Depere St.) via former SOO rails at Menasha, WI on 6 May '18. Founded in Menasha in Dec. 1917 as George Banta Paper Co., an affiliate of the George Banta Publishing Co. They merged with Menasha’s Gebrick Paper Co. in ’19 and continued under the Banta name. The name was changed to Central Paper Products Co. (later shortened to Central Paper Co.) ca. Sep. ’20, about the same time they moved to their new location at 422 Manitowoc St., on the north side of the joint MILW/SOO railroad tracks. It’s the same facility, but the addressed changed when a portion of Manitowoc St. was vacated to allow westward expansion ca. ’76-’80. George Banta, Sr. continued as President; George, Jr., assumed the role in ’35 after his father passed away. The facility was acquired by Alco Standard Corp., based in Valley Forge, PA, ca. 29 Sep. ’69 but continued to operate as Central Paper. The name changed to Central Products Co. at some point after ’74. Spinnaker Industries, Inc. purchased Central Products Co. from Alco ca' 1 Jul. ‘95. Intertape Polymer Group, Inc., from Canada, purchased Central Products from Spinnaker ca. 12 Apr. ’99. You don't see 6-axle units on this line very often, the last time I photographed one was 11 Aug. '14. Looking east from De Pere St., I was standing at the approximate site where the MILW rails crossed De Pere St.

Description:
A CN local works in the former SOO yard at Menasha, WI on 6 May '18. You don't see 6-axle units on this line very often, the last time I photographed one was 11 Aug. '14. It is awesome to see this many cars in the yard, it doesn't look like this very often these days. The facility at right is currently home to Alliance Industries, 310 Appleton St., Menasha, WI, they apply powder coatings and manufacture sand cores. Founded at Waupaca, WI in 1979, they leased this facility in 2005. They later purchased the facility as well as the adjacent one at 313 Appleton St. The facility was home to Menasha Mill Supply Co. from at least 1939 through the 1970s, they primarily processed waste paper. It clearly used to receive rail service, but it does not seem to currently. The former MILW yard was located on the other (south) side of it; the building could be serviced by both railroads simultaneously.

Title:
CN 8857 and CN 5330
Description:
CN mixed freight traverses the northeast quadrant of the junction in order to transition from the southbound former MILW main line to the eastbound former SOO main line at Juoction City, WI, on 21 Aug. '15. I was surprised by how long this train was, I did not realize how much rail traffic there apparently is north of here.

CN 2718 and CN 5335
Description:
A CN local approaches Main St. as it pulls 20 cars northwest via former C&NW rails at Hermansville, MI on 3 Nov. '18. The lead locomotive is passing the approximate location of the former junction with the SOO. The former SOO right-of-way running northeast from here is now a recreational trail, but the rails running southwest are still in use by the CN toward Pembine, WI.

CN 5340
Description:
CN 5340 parallels Union St. and passes the former Monroe St. grade crossing as it sorts cars at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 25 Sep. '20. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here.

CN 5343
Description:
CN through freight crosses what used to be the N. Union St. grade crossing and is about to disappear behind the north side of the historic Tuttle Press Co. mill as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 13 Jul. '13. Train was enroute to Green Bay from Stevens Point and had two locomotives, CN 2608 pulling and CN 5343 pushing. The factory dates to 1905, it later operated as Artfaire and finally as Sulpaco West, Inc. For nearly a century this facility produced a variety of renowned specialty papers: napkins, table covers, tissue, craft paper, paper dolls, gift boxes, crepe paper, and especially gift wrapping paper, until Sullivan Paper Co. shuttered this plant on 27 Jun. ’02 and moved production to one of its other facilities in Mass. Since then it appears to have been used as storage for one or more local businesses. The historic Eagle Manufacturing Co. facility is partially visible on the left. It has since been demolished to make way for new apartments or condominiums. There used to be a diamond on the opposite side of the tracks and to the left, where two spurs intersected to service several industries in that block.
