CN 2639, UP 6742, BNSF 4200, CN 2411
Title:  CN 2639, UP 6742, BNSF 4200, CN 2411
Description:  A CN unit train of 3-bay covered hoppers parallels Hwy. 41 and approaches the Hwy. G overpass as it heads southwest via former SOO rails at Snells, WI on 20 May '18. Snells is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. A Post Office was established on 4 May 1876, originally called Snell’s Station, sometimes referred to as Snell’s Crossing. This once small, rural community included a depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. It does not look like any substantial remnants of the community remain, even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone (it is not a station on the CN system map). The unit train of tank cars at right rests upon the former C&NW main line. Neenah Foundry Plant 2 & Plant 3 are partially visible in the background at left. Plant 2 opened in 1960 and Plant 3 was built in 1967. Plant 1 opened in 1918 and stood about a mile to the north, until it was closed in 1994 and eventually demolished.

CN 8101, BNSF 4290
Title:  CN 8101, BNSF 4290
Description:  A CN through freight approaches the Winneconne Ave. overpass as it heads northeast through the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 24 Jun. '18. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, the corporate overlords didn’t want to spend any money to update the plant. It stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished. The tan 4- or 5-story facility in the background at left is Kimberly-Clark Corp. (K-C) Neenah Nonwovens Facility. It, and the hard-working Americans employed there, are currently being used as pawns by K-C to extort corporate welfare from the taxpayers of Wis. ("We intend to close this facility, unless you give us money.") The facility partially visible at right is used by Neenah Foundry. The white building with sawtoothed roof on the left side of the yard is part of the Kimberly-Clark (K-C) Kimtech facility (historically Natural Fiber Textile Co.), which dates to at least 1920. The orange building partially visible at left might be part of the former Val-Fab, Inc. facility.

CN 8101 and BNSF 4290
Title:  CN 8101 and BNSF 4290
Description:  A CN through freight passes the Main St. overpass and Arrowhead Park while taking the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 24 Jun. '18. Train had two locomotives, CN 8101 and BNSF 4290. The tank cars at left are parked on the north leg of the wye. The remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot are partially visible to the right of the locomotives. The rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties (near the center of the photograph) rest atop the remnants of the foundation. The masonry depot was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened.

CN 3834 and BNSF 7094
Title:  CN 3834 and BNSF 7094
Description:  A CN through freight passes the depot/yard office (to left) and crosses W. 2nd St. while headed northeast past the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 16 Dec. '18. Carter's Caboose, 1428 W. 2nd St., a small, old, rail side tavern, stands to the right. It dates to at least 1930, when it was a soft drink establishment owned by Hubert J. Merkel and August F. Brandt (Prohibition was still in effect). By ’36 it was a tavern operated by Albert Giesen, owned by Mrs. Gretchen Merkel. By ’38 it was Bob’s Tavern, still owned by Mrs. Merkel. It was the Junction Tavern from at least ’43-’71, still owned by Mrs. Merkel until at least ’60 (there were at least two different owners between ’67-’71). At some point in the ‘70s it became Pete’s Junction (possibly Palomino Pete’s Junction). It was called Netticoat Junction ca. the ‘90s (owned by Joanne M. ‘Nettie’ Nett).

UP 6779 and BNSF 7992
Title:  UP 6779 and BNSF 7992
Description:  A through freight parallels Ehlers Rd. and approaches Towmen Rd. as it heads northeast via CN, former SOO, rails at Shawano Junction, Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016) on 27 Mar. '21. The train is transitioning to the former C&NW rails. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. To the right, a shiny, new, modern signal relay case stands where an awesome, old one once stood. To the right of that you can see some brand new signals. The installation commenced ca. 25 Apr. '20 and was completed ca. 3 Jul. '20. The new signals were activated and the old signals removed between 10 and 22 Aug. '21. The telephone pole to the left of center and the one to the left of the lead locomotive stand next to an abandoned portion of the C&NW right-of-way. It sure was nice of the railroad to complete some much-needed brush clearing along the tracks here so that train nuts like me can capture better views of their trains.

NS 1073 and BNSF 8224
Title:  NS 1073 and BNSF 8224
Description:  NS's Penn Central heritage unit leads a through freight, CN with leased power I presume, southward via former C&NW rails parallel to S. Main St./Hwy. 45 and the west shore of Lake Winnebago at Oshkosh, WI on 25 Oct. '14. Historically this area was known as South Oshkosh, but that designation has all but faded from use. I wish I could have captured a better shot of this unique locomotive during its rare visit to this area, but I barely got out of my truck in time to snap this less-than-ideal shot after chasing the train from Medina Junction.

BNSF 8352, CN 3064, and CN 5469
Title:  BNSF 8352, CN 3064, and CN 5469
Description:  A CN through freight parallels Union St. as it shoves a cut of cars into the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 12 Feb. '22. The historic Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility, 434 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond the train. It was built in 1902 after the original 1892 building was destroyed by fire and is currently used for storage. The historic Murer House, 432 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond that. It was built by Felix Murer in 1892 and is currently home to Sherry Town Station. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built. A 1909 map shows the yard still here, a 1936 map depicts both the old and new yards.
