CN 8898 and GECX 7329 |
Description: |
A CN unit train of autoracks passes the W. Bell St. overpass and approaches Kampo Rd. as it heads northeast via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 21 Apr. '18. Train had two locomotives, CN 8898 and GECX 7329. A remnant of the former C&NW main line (now relegated to a passing siding) is in the foreground. A new turnout rests between the two sets of tracks. It looks like it might replace the existing turnout for the former C&NW passing siding. |

Description: |
A CN through freight crosses Medina Junction Rd. (out-of-frame to right) and passes the Rat River Wildlife Area as it heads southeast via former SOO rails at Medina Junction, WI on 9 Jun. '18. It looks like there was a fire here earlier this spring, otherwise last year’s cattails and marsh grass would partially obscure the train. This scene looks odd without the interesting, old telephone poles that stood along the far side of the tracks for 146 years, until they were removed between 4 and 18 Sep. '17. |

Description: |
A CN through freight approaches Hwy. M as it heads southeast via former SOO rails at Medina Station, Town of Dale, Outagamie Co., WI on 8 Oct. '18. The WC built a depot here somewhere between 1871, when the line was laid, and 1889, when I recently found it depicted on a map. The site was labeled as Medina Station on maps until at least 1915. The depot stood approximately where the CN microwave tower now stands, at right. |

The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current yard was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard here. |

CN 5744 and GECX 7388 |
Description: |
A CN through freight approaches S. Perkins St. while headed northeast through past the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 3 Jun. '18. Train had two locomotives, CN 5744 and GECX 7388 (former CSX). Until recently, the building at right had a sign denoting its use by All About Packaging, Inc., Warehouse #2 (the dark rectangle above the service door shows where the sign was). There is a spur along the south side of the building, but the turnout for the spur was removed years ago. The oldest part of the building was completed in Mar. '60, the new facility for the Fox Valley Sheltered Workshop. Inc. (started in '55 to create employment opportunities for the disabled). It became Valley Packaging Industries Inc. ca. mid- or late-'80s. After they moved to a new facility, this one has been home to Valley Planing Mill, Inc., followed by Perfect Patterns, Inc. |

The tail end of a southbound CN through freight clears N. Lake St. as it prepares to set out and pick up cars at the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 2 Mar. '18. Train had at least four locomotives, CN 2834 and GECX 7700 (ex-CSX 7700) on the tail end and at least two locomotives on the head end. Eggers Industries, an active rail customer, is in the background. Founded at Neenah, WI, in 1910 as Hardwood Products Co., construction of the facility commenced in Oct. ’10. It was renamed Hardwood Products Corp. as a result of a merger with Mississippi Veneer & Lumber Co. on 20 Apr. ’22 (the latter company was formed by the same businessmen who founded the Neenah company). Eggers Industries acquired Hardwood Products Corp. in 1965 and renamed it Eggers Hardwood Products Corp. Eggers was founded by Fred W. Eggers at Two Rivers, WI in 1884 to make wood baskets used by farmers. They later started making plywood and other wood veneer products. There used to be 3 spurs to service the facility, now there is only 1. |

Description: |
A CN through freight approaches the Hwy. G overpass and parallels Hwy. 41 as it heads northeast via former SOO rails at Snells, WI on 27 Apr. '18. Snells, formerly known as Snell’s Station or Snell’s Crossing, is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. This small, rural community once included a post office, depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. It does not look like any real remnants of the original community remain. Even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone. The former C&NW rails run parallel on the other side of the train. |
