Title:  CN 8000, CN 5694, CN 2126, RTEX 8153
Description:  CN through freight slowly crosses over from the former SOO rails to the former C&NW rails in front of Neenah Foundry Plant 2 & Plant 3 at the south end of the yard at Neenah, WI on 9 Apr. '14. They were splitting the train and pulled up to this point to clear a turnout before shoving the front half of the train back into the yard. Train had four locomotives, CN 8000, CN 5694, CN 2126, RTEX 8153. Plant 2 opened in 1960 and Plant 3 was built in 1967. Plant 1 opened in 1918 and stood about a mile to the north, until it was closed in 1994 and eventually demolished.

Title:  CN 2246, IC 2718, CN 8002, BCOL 4652, et al.
Description:  A CN through freight rests along Union St. at the former Sherry St. grade crossing at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 10 Apr. '20. Train had five locomotives, CN 2246, IC 2718, CN 8002, BCOL 4652, CN 5261. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here.

CN 2231 and CN 8003
Title:  CN 2231 and CN 8003
Description:  A CN train approaches Harrison St. as it heads south via former SOO rails at Town of Oshkosh, Winnebago Co., WI, on 15 Oct. '22. The former C&NW right-of-way runs parallel to these tracks just out-of-frame to the right. The CN main line transitions from the former SOO to the former C&NW right-of-way at Harrison St. I was standing on Harrison St., in the City of Oshkosh, but the train is traversing an isolated, pitiful scrap of the Town of Oshkosh. Amcor Flexibles North America (previously Bemis Oshkosh North), is partially visible in the background.

This is where Tower CF once stood. I was standing on Harrison St., in the City of Oshkosh, but the train is traversing an isolated, pitiful scrap of the Town of Oshkosh.

Train had five locomotives, CN 5620, PRLX 211, CN 2122, CN 2410, CN 8013. The 1891 WC (later SOO) depot stood on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. CN 2831 and CN 8024 on the Oliver Bridge
Title:  CN 2831 and CN 8024 on the Oliver Bridge
Description:  A CN container train crosses the unique double-decked Oliver Bridge as it heads west via former DM&IR rails at Oliver, WI on 26 Jun. '16. Train had four locomotives, CN 2831 and CN 8024 pulling and CN 2252 and CN 2309 pushing. The Oliver Bridge is a double-deck, Warren truss, swing bridge built by the American Bridge Co. in 1910. It was built to connect the Spirit Lake Transfer Railway in MN to the Interstate Transfer Railway in WI, both became part of the DM&N. The bridge was named in honor of Henry W. Oliver, founder the Oliver Mining Co. It is 1,889’ long, 25’ wide, with a 306’ swing span. Due to the intent to span a navigable interstate waterway, the plans needed the approval of the War Dept. and Congress. The War Dept. required a movable span to enable river traffic. Congress required the accommodation of vehicular traffic. The railroads initially ignored the requirement to accommodate vehicular traffic; while most of the lower deck was built with the rest of the bridge in ‘10, the decking for the roadway was not installed and the approaches to connect roads to the bridge were not built. They ultimately conceded in ‘16 and the lower deck opened to traffic in ‘17. The roadway decking consisted of wooden planks until the timbers were replaced with concrete in 2001. The upper deck was built to be double tracked, but it is uncertain if it ever was. Some references are positive that it was double tracked, but one set was removed at some unknown point. Other references are sure that the second set of tracks were intended for an interurban line which ultimately never crossed the bridge, so that second set was never laid. Several references claim the bridge never operated as swing bridge, but there is plenty of information on the internet (if you extend your search beyond Wikipedia) to confirm that it did indeed function as such from when it was built until ca. ‘47. From about 1890 until at least 1942, excursion boats made frequent runs from Duluth to Fond du Lac, MN to carry passengers for day trips, weekend outings, and vacations. The Clow & Nicholson Transportation Co. was the prominent excursion line, from at least 1902 to 1942 their steamers Plowboy, Newsboy, Rotarian, Columbia, and Montauk (possibly others) made the 19 mile trip up river. A Minn. DoT bridge report also states that the DM&N, later DM&IR, had a bridge tender on duty continuously, in accordance with navigation laws, until 1953. That is when they received permission to stop manning the bridge due to the decline of river traffic, but they were required to maintain the ability to open the bridge on 3 hours’ notice if a ship needed to pass. The swing mechanism was disabled at some point.

CN 2831 and CN 8024 on the Oliver Bridge
Title:  CN 2831 and CN 8024 on the Oliver Bridge
Description:  A CN container train crosses the unique double decked Oliver Bridge as it heads west via former DM&IR rails at Oliver, WI on 26 Jun. It is 1,889’ long, 25’ wide, with a 306’ swing span (partially visible at left).

Title:  CN 8804, BCOL 4642, CN 2273
Description:  CN ore train approaches W. Forest Ave. as it crosses N. Water St. and crosses the Neenah Channel of the Fox River via the former joint MILW/SOO bridge at Neenah, WI on 8 Jan. '15. The head of the train is crawling over a mile through Neenah and into Menasha far enough for the train to clear the turnout at the east end of the wye. The train would then take the east leg of the wye into the yard, before eventually continuing on toward its destination. The building in the background, the corporate headquarters of Plexus, stands on the site of the former Glatfelter Paper mill (formerly Bergstrom Paper, originally Winnebago Paper), which stood for well over a century (the oldest part of the original mill was constructed in 1874) until it was torn down a few years ago.

The depot was built by Milwaukee & Northern in 1882 and is home to the Neenah-Menasha Model Railroad Club. The head of the train had crawled over a mile through Neenah and into Menasha far enough for the train to clear the turnout at the east end of the wye. The train has now reversed to take the east leg of the wye into the yard, before eventually continuing on toward its destination.

Title:  CN 2848, BNSF 6232, and CN 8808
Description:  A CN through freight parallels Ehlers Rd. and approaches Towmen Rd. as it heads northeast via former SOO rails at Shawano Junction, WI, on 11 Apr. '21. The train is transitioning to the former C&NW rails. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. A left, a shiny, new, modern signal relay case stands where an awesome, old one once stood. To the right you can see some brand new signals. The installation commenced ca. 25 Apr. '20 and was completed ca. 3 Jul. '20. The new signals were activated and the old signals removed between 10 and 22 Aug. '20. It sure was nice of the railroad to complete some much-needed brush clearing along the tracks here so that train nuts like me can capture better views of their trains.

The lead locomotive is passing the former Sherry St. grade crossing. The WC (later SOO) depot was built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest.
