This was a chance encounter, otherwise I would have attempted to shoot it from the other side of the tracks in order to avoid all of the telephone poles.

CN ore train crosses the Menasha Channel of the Fox River via former joint MILW/ SOO bridge and approaches the junction with the former C&NW mainline as it crawls through Menasha, WI pulling 215 ore cars on 5 May '14. It pulled up as far as the swing bridge over the Fox River Navigation Canal, halted, then reversed to back into the former SOO yard at Neenah. Train had four locomotives, CN 5542, BCOL 4651, CN 8821, and CN 2007. I am left to wonder if there has ever been this much horsepower on this line.

The motive power of a 215-car CN ore train spans half the width of this small industrial island as it slowly backs into the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI via former joint MILW/SOO rails at Menasha, WI on 5 May '14. This ore train crawled through Menasha up to the swing bridge over the Fox River Navigation Canal and after a momentary pause on the bridge, it reversed to back into the Neenah yard. Train had four locomotives, CN 5542, BCOL 4651, CN 8821, and CN 2007.

A CN through freight approaches Hwy. M as it heads southeast via former SOO rails at Medina Station, Town of Dale, Outagamie Co., WI on 8 Oct. '18. Train had two locomotives, CN 2035 and GECX 7366. The WC built a depot here somewhere between 1871, when the line was laid, and 1889, when I recently found it depicted on a map. The site was labeled as Medina Station on maps until at least 1915. The depot stood approximately where the CN microwave tower now stands, just out-of-frame to the right.

CN 2880, CN 2037, CN 207
Description:
CN autorack train passes the former SOO depot as it heads northwest through Waupaca, WI on Independence Day, 4 Jul. '15. This depot was built by WC in 1907 and opened in 1908; it is the 3rd WC depot at Waupaca. Passenger service ended in Jan. ‘65, but the railroad continued to use the depot until 1987. It stood vacant and decaying for many years until restoration began after it was purchased from the CN in 2004. The previous wooden depot had burned down on 5 May 1907. That 2nd depot was completed in Apr. 1881, when the original ca. 1871 depot was converted into a freight house. That original depot, then freight house, burned down in Nov. ’48. That led to the construction of the current brick freight house in early 1949, it is partially visible to the right of the lead locomotive. Train had three locomotives, CN 2880, CN 2037, and CN 207.

Consist included approximately 25 loaded CWRX rail cars. If my math is correct, the approximately 1/4-mile long rail segments could be joined together to form a section of continuous welded rail approximately 12-1/2 miles long somewhere. The W. Cecil St. overpass (Timothy Hamblin Bridge), erected to eliminate the grade crossing, opened to traffic on 20 Nov. '07.

Description:
A CN through freight crosses Medina Junction Rd. (out-of-frame to right) and passes the Rat River Wildlife Area as it heads southeast via former SOO rails at Medina Junction, WI on 9 Jun. '18. It looks like there was a fire here earlier this spring, otherwise last year’s cattails and marsh grass would partially obscure the train. This scene looks odd without the interesting, old telephone poles that stood along the far side of the tracks for 146 years, until they were removed between 4 and 18 Sep. '17.

Plant 2 opened in 1960 and Plant 3 was built in 1967.,Plant 1 opened in 1918 and stood about a mile to the north, until it was closed in 1994 and eventually demolished.

CN through freight approaches E. Snell Rd. and passes a halted through freight as it heads southwest via former SOO rails at Oshkosh, WI on 23 Jul. '17. The moving train had 2 locomotives, CN 2653 and CN 8940, and the halted train had at least five locomotives, including CN 2118, CN 2199, CN 2340. I was standing at what used to be the former C&NW grade crossing. The border between the City of Oshkosh and the Town of Oshkosh is quite convoluted in this area. The land to the left of the active rails in front of me and the land on both sides of the active rails behind me is the Town of Oshkosh, but the land to the right of the active rails in front of me is the City of Oshkosh. Go about 400' behind me and the land on both sides of the active rails is the City of Oshkosh.

Description:
CN 2120, a former C&NW unit, and its train rest on the east leg of the wye at the former C&NW yard at Powers, MI on 3 Nov. '18. The CN logo is partially visible on the gray building to the left of the locomotive. About 9 hours later, we watched CN 2120 pull 20 cars (but not this centerbeam flatcar) southbound through Marinette, WI. Zooming in on Google Street View reveals that this view would have been obscured by the feed mill that stood here not too long ago.
