BNSF 748 and CN 2338
Title:  BNSF 748 and CN 2338
Description:  A CN through freight parallels W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd. as it heads southwest via former C&NW rails at Stroebe, WI on 3 May '18. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI until 14 Apr. '16 (not Outagamie Co., where Stroebe was erroneously placed on this site)). Train had two locomotives, BNSF 748 (don't see Warbonnets around here too often) and CN 2338. The former SOO rails are visible beyond the train. The facility in the background has a spur running into it, but the current occupant (since Fall of '06), SERVPRO of Appleton, does not appear to benefit from rail service. The facility was once home to Viking Steel.

BNSF 4087 and CN 5775
Title:  BNSF 4087 and CN 5775
Description:  A large CN through freight has taken the east leg of the wye and fouls Millview Dr. while setting out and picking up cars at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 5 Jan. '18. This train usually takes the west leg of the wye and fouls N. Lake St. while doing its work, but MoW crews were replacing a section of rail at that grade crossing at the time. The Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant) loomed beyond the train, until demolition was completed in the spring of '16. Opened in Jan. '98, it stood idle since 15 Jun. '13.

Title:  BNSF 4092, BNSF 4428, and BNSF 6675
Description:  A trio of BNSF units lead a unit train of 2-bay covered hoppers across Dixie Rd., headed northeast via CN, former SOO, rails at Town of Vinland, Winnebago Co., WI on 27 Jan. '18. Another unit train of 2-bay covered hoppers, led by a pair of BNSF units and a CN unit, waits to head the opposite direction from Dixie Siding, a remnant of the former C&NW main line. If I had known both trains were led by BNSF units, I would have attempted to capture a decent shot of the meet.

CN 2569 and BNSF 4403
Title:  CN 2569 and BNSF 4403
Description:  A CN ballast train (Herzog ballast cars) approaches S. Mason St. as it heads southwest via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 7 Nov. '18. The old, seemingly idle, industrial facility partially visible at left used to receive rail service, many years ago. The facility at 1215-1225 W. Spencer St., Appleton, WI, dates to at least the ‘50s. It was home to the John Krogh Supply Co. (a.k.a. John Krogh Wholesale Co.). They went out of business in early ‘67 and the Arrow Moving & Storage Co. moved into the facility. Signs indicate that Miller Electric and Earthkote International, Inc., where more recent occupants.

Title:  BNSF 4526, CN 2562, et al.
Description:  An unusual pair of CN through freights rest on former C&NW main line and siding at Stroebe, WI on 3 Feb. '18. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI until 14 Apr. '16 (not Outagamie Co., where Stroebe was erroneously placed on this site)). Train at left had two locomotives, BNSF 4526 and CN 2588. Train at right had two locomotives, CN 2562 and CN 2283. Adding to the unusualness, a pair of BNSF units were parked on the crossover from the former SOO rails to the C&NW rails at the northeast end of Stroebe siding.

BNSF 4526 and CN 2588
Title:  BNSF 4526 and CN 2588
Description:  A CN through freight rests amid the ongoing reconstruction of the Hwy. 41/Hwy. 10/Hwy. 441 (a.k.a. Tri-County Expressway) interchange (a.k.a. the Polish Connection) on former C&NW rails at Stroebe, WI on 3 Feb. '18. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI until 14 Apr. '16 (not Outagamie Co., where Stroebe was erroneously placed on this site)). The interchange opened to traffic on 30 Nov. '75. When Hwy. 10 was reconstructed and relocated ca. '97, this interchange was not simultaneously reconstructed to form a full interchange, but the ongoing, extensive expansion and reconstruction will make it a full interchange as well as increase traffic capacity. It was an unusual afternoon at Stroebe, because another through freight had been halted next to this one up until a few minutes earlier. Adding to the unusualness, a pair of BNSF units were parked on the crossover from the former SOO rails to the C&NW rails at the northeast end of Stroebe siding.

BNSF 4573 and CN 2530
Title:  BNSF 4573 and CN 2530
Description:  A CN train traverses the west leg of the wye as it backs into the north end of the former SOO yard to set out and pick up caps at Neenah, WI on 18 Aug. '18. On the far side of the train lies Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye, partially visible to the left of the lead locomotive. At right, a large quantity of fill is being added to the eastern half of the park, in preparation of future improvements. The Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant) dominated the eastern half of the landfill from its opening in Jan. '98 until demolition was completed in the spring of '16. The former C&NW bridge, now part of the Friendship Trail (often erroneously referred to as the Trestle Trail), can be seen in the background. The Roland Kampo Bridge, a.k.a. the Polish Connection, can be seen beyond that.

Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill, lies beyond the trains. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye, partially visible between the lead locomotives. The Roland Kampo Bridge, a.k.a. the Polish Connection, can be seen beyond that. The foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot can be seen beyond the dumpsters at left. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. Train to the right was backing into the yard to set out and pick up cars and had two locomotives. Train to the left was just passing through.

A through freight, led by another BNSF unit and a CN unit, rests at the southwest end of the former C&NW siding at Stroebe (out-of-frame to the left). CSX 3032 and BNSF 5312
Title:  CSX 3032 and BNSF 5312
Description:  A CN through freight parallels Union St. and passes the former Sherry St. grade crossing as it shoves a cut of cars into the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 24 Mar. '19. The historic Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility, 434 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond the train at right. It was built in 1902 after the original 1892 building was destroyed by fire and is currently used for storage. The historic Murer House, 432 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond that. It was built by Felix Murer in 1892 and is currently home to Sherry Town Station. The WC (later SOO) depot stood on the opposite side of Sherry St. from those two buildings; it was built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard here.
