CN 3870 and BNSF 8541
Title:  CN 3870 and BNSF 8541
Description:  A CN through freight passes the Main St. overpass and traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 30 Aug. '20. The white building partially visible at left is, or was, Progressive Paper Storage, Inc. (formerly Kimberly-Clark Warehouse (K-C Warehouse)), 135 Millview Dr. It does not receive rail service, but it looks like there may have been a spur on the northwest side of the building in the past. First Presbyterian Church, 200 S. Church St., can be seen above the warehouse. The clock tower of the once impressive 1888 city hall building, intersection of S. Commercial St. and W. Doty St., looks like a church steeple from this perspective, but it is a block east of the church.

Title:  CN 3870 and BNSF 8541
Description:  A CN through freight traverses the west leg of the wye as it heads northwest at the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 30 Aug. '20. On the far side of the train lies Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye. The former C&NW bridge across Little Lake Butte des Morts, now part of the Friendship Trail (often erroneously referred to as the Trestle Trail), can be seen in the background. The Roland Kampo Bridge, a.k.a. the Polish Connection, can be seen beyond that.

CN 3875
Title:  CN 3875
Description:  A CN container train parallels Union St. and approaches the Winneconne Ave. overpass as it heads south at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 15 May '20. Train had two locomotives, CN 2980 pulling and CN 3875 pushing. The building at left, 716 Harrison St., once used by Neenah Foundry, I believe, is in the process of being spruced up with a fresh coat of paint and some new doors (they have gotten to this end yet, obviously). The Main St. overpass is in the background. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here.

'20. Train had three locomotives, CN 3136 and CN 3875 pulling as well as CN 3020 mid-train. The Main St. overpass is in the background to the left. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built. A 1909 map shows the yard still here, a 1936 map depicts both the old and new yards.

Title:  CN 3970
Description:  A CN train heads south past the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 18 Feb. '24. Train had two locomotives, CN 3249 pulling and CN 3970 mid-train. In the background, we can see evidence of continued expansion of Galloway Co., 601 S. Commercial St. (an active rail customer). This view would have been prevented by the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994. It stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished.

CN 2400 and Ferrocarril Mexicano (Feromex) FXE 4687
Title:  CN 2400 and Ferrocarril Mexicano (Feromex) FXE 4687
Description:  CN through freight, assisted by an interesting foreign visitor, parallels Hwy. 41 as it heads southwest via former C&NW rails at Snells, WI on 20 Mar. '18. Snells, formerly known as Snell’s Station or Snell’s Crossing, is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. This small, rural community once included a post office, depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. I do not know if each railroad had their own small depot, or if one small depot served both railroads, I suspect it was the latter. It does not look like any real remnants of the original community remain. Even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone. The former SOO rails, also in use by CN, can be seen on this side of the train.

Description:  A colorful trio of foreign visitors lead a through freight parallel to Harrison St. and approaching Kampo Rd. as it heads southwest via CN, former SOO, rails at Neenah, WI on 14 May '18. Neenah Foundry Plant 2 & Plant 3 are partially visible in the background. Plant 2 opened in 1960 and Plant 3 was built in 1967. Plant 1 opened in 1918 and stood about a mile to the north, until it was closed in 1994 and eventually demolished. A remnant of the former C&NW main line, now relegated to a passing siding, is visible to the right. I am curious to learn where the new turnout (stacked in pieces between the tracks) will be installed.

BNSF 9191 and BNSF 5940
Title:  BNSF 9191 and BNSF 5940
Description:  A pair of out-of-town visitors lead a through freight across Winchester Rd./Hwy. II as they head northwest via former SOO rails at Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, WI until 14 Apr. '16) on 5 Nov. '16. I thought the train was going to take the cross over and roll past me toward Stevens Point, but they faked me out and headed for Green Bay instead. The divergence of rail lines at Winchester Rd., where the line in the foreground heads northwest toward Stevens Point and the other line heads northeast toward Green Bay, is labeled Winnebago Junction on some old maps. The grade crossing in the foreground is Ehlers Rd.

BNSF 9079 and BNSF 6037 at MERC
Title:  BNSF 9079 and BNSF 6037 at MERC
Description:  BNSF 9079 and BNSF 6037 lead a coal train which has just arrived at Midwest Energy Resources Company (MERC), Superior, WI, as seen from the Vista Star during Vista Fleet's Grand Sightseeing Tour of the Duluth & Superior Harbor at Duluth, MN on 25 Jun. '16. Above the train is the conveyor which feeds the traveling shiploader, on the right is one of the loader's huge legs. The coal is delivered by 123-car BNSF unit trains, 14,000 tons at a time. UP also brings coal, their trains are likely similar in size and capacity. The coal is unloaded from the train via a rotary dumping machine and conveyed to a massive storage pile (out of frame to right). Underground augers convey the coal from that pile to the shiploader. Some regional customers bring in trucks to pick up their coal. This information comes from the facilities website, http://www.midwestenergy.com/, which includes some interesting videos as well. I was fortunate enough to receive a tour of this impressive facility with a well-known group of like-minded railroad history enthusiasts. Additional information about the harbor cruise can be found at http://www.vistafleet.com/.

BNSF 8758, BNSF 6263, BNSF 7543
Title:  BNSF 8758, BNSF 6263, BNSF 7543
Description:  A trio of interesting and colorful foreigners lead a unit train of 2-bay covered hoppers along Hwy. 41 and approaching the Hwy. G overpass while headed northeast via CN, former SOO, rails at Snells, WI on 27 Apr. '18. Snells, formerly known as Snell’s Station or Snell’s Crossing, is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. This once small, rural community included a depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. It does not look like any substantial remnants of the community remain, even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone. The former C&NW rails, also in use by CN, run parallel behind the brush to the left of the train.

I believe it is owned by RGL Logistics, 1715/1725 Dixie Rd., Neenah, WI (physically located in Town of Neenah). Previous occupants of the facility include Checker Logistics and Warehouse Specialists, Inc.
