CN 2909, et al.
Title:  CN 2909, et al.
Description:  A southbound CN tank car unit train passes the yard office in an unusually empty former C&NW yard at Oshkosh, WI on 10 Feb. '16. Normally this view of the facility is blocked by the cars in the yard. I've never seen this yard completely empty. The building on the right sits at the approximate location of the C&NW's South Oshkosh depot, a smaller, plainer structure than their once ornate Oshkosh depot which still stands less than a mile to the north. Historically, everything south of the Fox River was once known as South Oshkosh. The C&NW South Oshkosh depot was saved from demolition, but its current fate is unknown to me. I have seen post-relocation photographs of it on the internet, but they do not reveal its precise location. Some references state it was moved to downtown Oshkosh, others state it was moved to a park in Oshkosh. If it still survives, I have not found it yet. Train had three locomotives, CN 2811 and CN 2873 pulling, as well as CN 2909 pushing.

CN 2909, et al.
Title:  CN 2909, et al.
Description:  CN through freight passes the CHS Larsen Cooperative - Readfield grain terminal and fertilizer facility (partially visible at left) as it heads east via former SOO rails at North Readfield, WI on 28 Oct. '17. Larsen Cooperative merged with CHS, Inc. on 1 Sep. '12. Train had three locomotives, CN 2827 and CN 2807 up front and CN 2909 mid-train. Some confuse North Readfield with slightly larger Readfield, 1 mile to the south. This is likely due, in part, because everything in the former has a mailing address of the latter. The pair of unincorporated communities are distinct, and the latter has no railroad tracks.

CN 3160 and CN 2914
Title:  CN 3160 and CN 2914
Description:  A CN through freight parallels Union St., passes the former Adams St. grade crossing, and approaches the former Monroe St. grade crossing as it heads south at the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 21 Mar. '19. It looks like they are preparing to replace one of the crossovers in the near future. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St. used to be the yard. I don't know when the current yard was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard here. Adams St. was originally Washington St., until at least 1913.

I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here.

Title:  CN 8813, CN 2915, CN 3006, IC 1201
Description:  CN through freight slows to halt along Union St. at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 28 Apr. '16. Train had four locomotives, CN 8813, CN 2915, CN 3006, IC 1201. The lead locomotive is passing the former Sherry St. grade crossing. The WC (later SOO) depot was built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest.

Description:  A CN through freight passes the station sign as it heads northeast via former SOO rails at Shawano Junction, Fox Crossing (originally Town of Menasha until 14 Apr. '16), Winnebago Co., WI on 12 May '19. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. The locomotives are about to pass that turnout and transition to the former C&NW rails to head for Green Bay, WI. Train had two locomotives, CN 2918 and CN 3194. It sure was nice of the railroad to complete some much-needed brush clearing along the tracks here so that train nuts like me can capture better views of their trains. Unfortunately it also reveals the garbage dumped here illegally by lazy, stupid, inconsiderate 21st Century Americans, like the stack of tires just out-of-frame to the left or the TVs near the signal relay case.

Founded at Neenah, WI, in 1910 as Hardwood Products Co., construction of the facility commenced in Oct. ’10. It was renamed Hardwood Products Corp. as a result of a merger with Mississippi Veneer & Lumber Co. on 20 Apr. ’22 (the latter company was formed by the same businessmen who founded the Neenah company). Eggers Industries acquired Hardwood Products Corp. in 1965 and renamed it Eggers Hardwood Products Corp. Eggers was founded by Fred W. Eggers at Two Rivers, WI in 1884 to make wood baskets used by farmers. They later started making plywood and other wood veneer products. The name was changed to simply Eggers Industries at some point. It was acquired by Holstein, IA, based VT Industries, Inc., on 2 Oct. ’18. There used to be 3 spurs to service the facility, now there is only 1.

Train had four locomotives, CN 3119 and CN 3086 up front, as well as CN 2805 and CN 2923 mid-train. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, it stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished. Part of the fence on this side of the tracks has been temporarily removed, they were preparing to replace some of the turnouts on this end of the yard.

CN 2947, et al.
Title:  CN 2947, et al.
Description:  Just as one CN through freight was about to clear N. Lake St., another one rounded the curve to approach the same grade crossing while headed northwest via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 8 Mar. '18. Train on the left was headed toward Green Bay. The train on the right was headed for Stevens Point and had two locomotives, CN 2947 and CREX 1504. I enjoy watching trains, so I was thrilled to see the second triangle of light round the curve. I am nearly certain that most of the motorists idling away at the grade crossing did not share my enthusiasm. The former Lieber Lumber facility is partially visible at right. Part of that facility is used as a warehouse by somebody, the office/retail building is currently home to the Valley Academy for the Arts.

CN 3813 and CN 2951
Title:  CN 3813 and CN 2951
Description:  A CN train passes the FV&LS (or FOXY), former CN, originally C&NW, depot as it heads northeast at Appleton Junction, WI, on 5 Jul. '24. There used to be a diamond right about where the rear truck of the second locomotive rests, from ca. 1874 until at least 1968, where the MLS&W crossed the C&NW. When the MLS&W was absorbed by the C&NW on 1 Sep. 1893, their line became the Ashland Div. of the C&NW. The white building partially visible in the background is the former home of the Harry H. Long Moving and Storage Co., 1001 S. Douglas St., Appleton, WI. This building dates to at least 1953, when it was listed in the local directory (it was not listed in ’51). The building has a spur, but it hasn’t been used for quite a while (except for occasional MoW equipment). Now called Harry H. Long Moving Storage & Express, Inc., the company moved to a larger facility in Town of Clayton, Winnebago Co., WI in 2001.
