CN 3160 and CN 2914
Description:
A CN through freight parallels Union St., passes the former Adams St. grade crossing, and approaches the former Monroe St. grade crossing as it heads south at the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 21 Mar. '19. It looks like they are preparing to replace one of the crossovers in the near future. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St. used to be the yard. I don't know when the current yard was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard here. Adams St. was originally Washington St., until at least 1913.

CN 2914
Description:
A CN container train parallels Union St., passes the former Caroline St. grade crossing, and passes a halted through freight as it heads south at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 4 Apr. '20. Train had two locomotives, CN 3222 pulling and CN 2914 pushing. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here.

CN 8813, CN 2915, CN 3006, IC 1201
Description:
CN through freight slows to halt along Union St. at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 28 Apr. '16. Train had four locomotives, CN 8813, CN 2915, CN 3006, IC 1201. The lead locomotive is passing the former Sherry St. grade crossing. The WC (later SOO) depot was built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest.

CN 2918, et al.
Description:
A CN through freight passes the station sign as it heads northeast via former SOO rails at Shawano Junction, Fox Crossing (originally Town of Menasha until 14 Apr. '16), Winnebago Co., WI on 12 May '19. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. The locomotives are about to pass that turnout and transition to the former C&NW rails to head for Green Bay, WI. Train had two locomotives, CN 2918 and CN 3194. It sure was nice of the railroad to complete some much-needed brush clearing along the tracks here so that train nuts like me can capture better views of their trains. Unfortunately it also reveals the garbage dumped here illegally by lazy, stupid, inconsiderate 21st Century Americans, like the stack of tires just out-of-frame to the left or the TVs near the signal relay case.

CN 2920 and CN 3260
Description:
A CN through freight approaches Wisconsin Rd. (formerly Main St.)/Hwy. 96 as it heads southeast via former SOO rails at Dale, WI, on 20 Feb. '21. Historically Main St. (as listed on CN's signal relay case), some of the street signs have been changed to Wisconsin Rd. (it shows up as Wisconsin Ave. on the satellite map). Hwy. 96 used to be Hwy. 10, until the latter's expansion and relocation ca. '97. Train had three locomotives, CN 2920 and CN 3260 pulling as well as CN 3099 mid-train.

Train had four locomotives, CN 3850 and CN 3843 pulling and CN 2921 and CN 3016 mid-train. Eggers Div. of VT Industries, 164 N. Lake St., an active rail customer, is in the background. Founded at Neenah, WI, in 1910 as Hardwood Products Co., construction of the facility commenced in Oct. ’10. It was renamed Hardwood Products Corp. as a result of a merger with Mississippi Veneer & Lumber Co. on 20 Apr. ’22 (the latter company was formed by the same businessmen who founded the Neenah company). Eggers Industries acquired Hardwood Products Corp. in 1965 and renamed it Eggers Hardwood Products Corp. Eggers was founded by Fred W. Eggers at Two Rivers, WI in 1884 to make wood baskets used by farmers. They later started making plywood and other wood veneer products. The name was changed to simply Eggers Industries at some point. It was acquired by Holstein, IA, based VT Industries, Inc., on 2 Oct. ’18. There used to be 3 spurs to service the facility, now there is only 1.

CN 2805, CN 2923, et al.
Description:
CN through freight heads south at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 8 Oct. '17. Train had four locomotives, CN 3119 and CN 3086 up front, as well as CN 2805 and CN 2923 mid-train. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, it stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished. Part of the fence on this side of the tracks has been temporarily removed, they were preparing to replace some of the turnouts on this end of the yard.

CN container train passes the Main St. overpass and traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard as it overtakes a halted mix freight at Neenah, WI on 23 Jul. '15. The remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot are near the right edge of the photograph. There are rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties stacked upon it. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. Container train had two locomotives, IC 1008 and CN 5628. Mixed freight had two locomotives, CN 2935 and BCOL 4609. There is a convenient park bench here in Arrowhead Park, a nice spot to relax and watch trains go by.

Description:
Just as one CN through freight was about to clear N. Lake St., another one rounded the curve to approach the same grade crossing while headed northwest via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 8 Mar. '18. Train on the left was headed toward Green Bay. The train on the right was headed for Stevens Point and had two locomotives, CN 2947 and CREX 1504. I enjoy watching trains, so I was thrilled to see the second triangle of light round the curve. I am nearly certain that most of the motorists idling away at the grade crossing did not share my enthusiasm. The former Lieber Lumber facility is partially visible at right. Part of that facility is used as a warehouse by somebody, the office/retail building is currently home to the Valley Academy for the Arts.

CN 3813 and CN 2951
Description:
A CN train passes the FV&LS (or FOXY), former CN, originally C&NW, depot as it heads northeast at Appleton Junction, WI, on 5 Jul. '24. There used to be a diamond right about where the rear truck of the second locomotive rests, from ca. 1874 until at least 1968, where the MLS&W crossed the C&NW. When the MLS&W was absorbed by the C&NW on 1 Sep. 1893, their line became the Ashland Div. of the C&NW. The white building partially visible in the background is the former home of the Harry H. Long Moving and Storage Co., 1001 S. Douglas St., Appleton, WI. This building dates to at least 1953, when it was listed in the local directory (it was not listed in ’51). The building has a spur, but it hasn’t been used for quite a while (except for occasional MoW equipment). Now called Harry H. Long Moving Storage & Express, Inc., the company moved to a larger facility in Town of Clayton, Winnebago Co., WI in 2001.

Description:
A CN container train parallels Union St. and passes the former Adams St. grade crossing as it heads south at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 15 May '20. Train had two locomotives, CN 2980 pulling and CN 3875 pushing. The former Caroline St. and Sherry St. grade crossings can also be seen. The Main St. overpass is in the background. A CN local can be seen in the distance, resting on the passing siding while it waits to head for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here.

CN 3813 and CN 2984
Description:
A CN through freight passes the Winneconne Ave. overpass and the remnants of the former Winneconne Ave. grade crossing as it heads south through the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 29 Mar. '20. Train had three locomotives, CN 3813 and CN 2984 pulling as well as CN 3049 mid-train. The front door of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century, was near the lower right of the scene. Plant 1 was closed in 1994, the corporate overlords didn’t want to spend any money to update the plant. It stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished. The iconic crossing tower which, until 1991, would have been visible above the cab of the second locomotive now resides at the Mid-Continent Railway Museum: https://www.midcontinent.org/about-us/tour-of-grounds/the-crossing-tower/.

Description:
A CN through freight parallels Ehlers Rd. and approaches Towmen Rd. as it heads northeast via former SOO rails at Shawano Junction, Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016) on 9 May. '20. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. The train is transitioning to the former C&NW rails. Some work is under way to prepare for the installation of some brand new signals. In a few days a shiny, new signal relay case will be installed next to this awesome old one. Unfortunately, evidence of some illegal dumping can also be seen.

CN 2985 and CN 3011
Description:
A CN container train parallels Harrison St. and approaches the former Byrd Ave. grade crossing as it heads southwest past the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 19 May '18. A fellow train nut and I were enjoying an evening picnic (tasty vittles from the nearby Tom's Drive In) on the tail gate of his pickup truck, waiting to photograph passing trains. This train approaches, we grab our cameras, start shooting, and start to wonder why the engineer is laying on the horn. As our gaze follows the train as it passes us, we notice the reason for the horn. A moronic, trespassing, fat, old, grotesquely-bulging-spandex-clad, ersatz Lance Armstrong is dragging his bicycle across the tracks at the former Byrd Ave. grade crossing, right in front of the rapidly approaching freight train. When the engineer blew the horn, the moron flipped off the train crew and offered us a smug, arrogant grin while we stared in disbelief as he waddled away.
