Snells is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. A Post Office was established 4 May 1876, originally called Snell’s Station, sometimes referred to as Snell’s Crossing. This small, rural community once included a depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. It does not look like any real remnants of the original community remain. Even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone. Train had four locomotives, IC 2720 and CN 5636 leading and CN 5639 and CN 8913 mid-train. |

Train on the left had three locomotives, CN 8913 and UP 8953 pulling as well as CN 2284 mid-train. The guardrail next to the lead locomotive marks the former Sherry St. grade crossing. The WC (later SOO) depot was built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest. |

The land to the left of the active rails in front of me and the land on both sides of the active rails behind me is the Town of Oshkosh, but the land to the right of the active rails in front of me is the City of Oshkosh. Go about 400' behind me and the land on both sides of the active rails is the City of Oshkosh. |

Train had six locomotives, CN 8940, CN 2446, CN 2335, CN 5798, CSX 7811, GECX 9xxx. A cut of cars rests by the depot/yard office. I was thrilled to find these cars here, because I thought it meant the local had made a daylight run (the Oshkosh local seems to usually be a nocturnal run). I waited for quite a while, but didn't see or hear any other signs of the local's presence. The depot/yard office sits at the approximate location of the C&NW's South Oshkosh depot, a smaller, plainer structure than their once ornate Oshkosh depot which still stands less than a mile to the north. Historically, everything south of the Fox River was once known as South Oshkosh. The C&NW South Oshkosh depot was saved from demolition, but its current fate is unknown to me. I have seen post-relocation photographs of it on the internet, but they do not reveal its precise location. Some references state it was moved to downtown Oshkosh, others state it was moved to a park in Oshkosh. If it still survives, I have not found it yet. Most of the yard was torn up in Aug. '16; they did leave the passing siding and team track. |

A CN unit train of tank cars parallels Harrison St. and passes Neenah Foundry Plant 2 & Plant 3 as it heads southwest via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 30 Nov. '18. Plant 2 opened in 1960 and Plant 3 was built in 1967. Plant 1 opened in 1918 and stood about a mile to the north, until it was closed in 1994 and eventually demolished. A remnant of the former C&NW main line runs parallel on the other side of the train. |
