CN 8857 and CN 5330
Title:  CN 8857 and CN 5330
Description:  CN mixed freight traverses the northeast quadrant of the junction in order to transition from the southbound former MILW main line to the eastbound former SOO main line at Juoction City, WI, on 21 Aug. '15. I was surprised by how long this train was, I did not realize how much rail traffic there apparently is north of here.

Title:  CN 8858 and CN 5751
Description:  The trailing units slowly push a CN ore train through the north leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 11 Dec. '14. The head of the train was crawling over a mile through Neenah and into Menasha far enough for the train to clear the turnout at the east end of the wye. The train would then take the east leg of the wye into the yard, halt, and eventually head toward Green Bay and points beyond. Train had four locomotives, CN 2725 and CN 2037 pulling as well as CN 8858 and CN 5751 pushing.

Description:  CN ore train slowly traverses the north leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 11 Dec. '14. The head of the train was crawling over a mile through Neenah and into Menasha far enough for the train to clear the turnout at the east end of the wye. Title:  CN 2159, BCOL 4625, CN 5431, CN 8862
Description:  CN through freight has halted adjacent to Harrison St., split its train, and is now shoving 13 cars into the south end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 4 Jul. ’14. I presume they were going to drop off one or more of those cars before recoupling to the remainder of their train, which included a string of over 60 loaded Herzog ballast cars, and continuing on their way. I was not able to stay long enough to find out for sure.

CN 5702 and CN 8865
Title:  CN 5702 and CN 8865
Description:  A CN container train traverses the west leg of the wye and approaches the Main St. overpass at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 1 Oct. '20. The locomotives are passing the remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot. There are rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties stacked upon it. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. On the far side of the train lies Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye. Clearwater Paper Corp., historically Kimberly-Clark’s Lakeview mill, 249 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI (physically located in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016)), an active rail customer, is partially visible in the background to the right. The new, concrete railroad ties which were recently laid out next to the main line have even more recently been picked up and re-stacked.

CN 2128, CN 2163, and CN 8867
Title:  CN 2128, CN 2163, and CN 8867
Description:  A southbound CN unit train of 2-bay covered hoppers passes the depot/yard office and the sad remnants of the former C&NW yard at Oshkosh, WI on 29 May '17. The depot/yard office sits at the approximate location of the C&NW’s South Oshkosh depot, a smaller, plainer structure than their once ornate Oshkosh depot which still stands less than a mile to the north. Historically, everything south of the Fox River was once known as South Oshkosh. The C&NW South Oshkosh depot was saved from demolition, but its current fate is unknown to me. I have seen post-relocation photographs of it on the internet, but they do not reveal its precise location. Some references state it was moved to downtown Oshkosh, others state it was moved to a park in Oshkosh. If it still survives, I have not found it yet. The yard was torn up in Aug. '16. There had been no cars spotted here since at least 31 Jan. '16. They did leave the passing siding and team track.

CN 2612, CN 5731, CN 8877
Title:  CN 2612, CN 5731, CN 8877
Description:  A CN through freight rests along Hwy. 41 at Snells, WI on 28 Jan. '18. I can't tell if it has halted along the former SOO main line or the former C&NW main line, probably the latter. Snells, formerly known as Snell’s Station or Snell’s Crossing, is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. This small, rural community once included a post office, depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. Snells was located at Mile 183 on the SOO’s Trevor to Somerset line and Mile 173.1 on the C&NW’s Milwaukee to Marinette line. I do not know if each railroad had their own small depot, or if one small depot served both railroads, I suspect it was the latter. It does not look like any real remnants of the original community remain. Even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone.
