CN 2834, et al.
Title:  CN 2834, et al.
Description:  The tail end of a southbound CN through freight clears N. Lake St. as it prepares to set out and pick up cars at the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 2 Mar. '18. Train had at least four locomotives, CN 2834 and GECX 7700 (ex-CSX 7700) on the tail end and at least two locomotives on the head end. Eggers Industries, an active rail customer, is in the background. Founded at Neenah, WI, in 1910 as Hardwood Products Co., construction of the facility commenced in Oct. ’10. It was renamed Hardwood Products Corp. as a result of a merger with Mississippi Veneer & Lumber Co. on 20 Apr. ’22 (the latter company was formed by the same businessmen who founded the Neenah company). Eggers Industries acquired Hardwood Products Corp. in 1965 and renamed it Eggers Hardwood Products Corp. Eggers was founded by Fred W. Eggers at Two Rivers, WI in 1884 to make wood baskets used by farmers. They later started making plywood and other wood veneer products. There used to be 3 spurs to service the facility, now there is only 1.

CN 3265 and CN 2834
Title:  CN 3265 and CN 2834
Description:  A CN unit train of tank cars traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 5 Sep. '20. It looks like some new, concrete railroad ties will be installed on the main line soon. I've never seen these around here before. The remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot can be seen to the left. There are rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties stacked upon it. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. On the far side of the train lies Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye (partially visible to the right). A large quantity of fill is being added to the eastern half of the park, in preparation of future improvements. The Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant) dominated the eastern half of the landfill from its opening in Jan. '98 until demolition was completed in the spring of '16. The former C&NW bridge across Little Lake Butte des Morts, now part of the Friendship Trail (often erroneously referred to as the Trestle Trail), can be seen in the background to the right. Train had three locomotives, CN 3265 and CN 2834 pulling as well as CN 2845 pushing.

Title:  CN 2927 and CN 2843
Description:  A CN unit train of tank cars approaches Fond du Lac Rd./Hwy. 45 while headed south via former C&NW rails at Oshkosh, WI on 30 Mar. '19. Train had three locomotives, CN 2927 and CN 2843 pulling and CN 3096 pushing. The second locomotive is crossing a neat, old bridge spanning an apparently unnamed creek which empties into Lake Winnebago (just out-of-frame to the right). Like many of the C&NW bridges in the area, the abutments were built wide enough to support two tracks. Some maintenance of the bridge is in progress.

CN 2845
Title:  CN 2845
Description:  A CN unit train of tank cars traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 5 Sep. '20. It looks like some new, concrete railroad ties will be installed on the main line soon. I've never seen these around here before. Beyond the north leg of the wye lies Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye. The white building to the right is, or was, Progressive Paper Storage, Inc. (formerly Kimberly-Clark Warehouse (K-C Warehouse)), 135 Millview Dr. It does not receive rail service, but it looks like there may have been a spur on the northwest side of the building in the past. Beyond that, several of Neenah's repugnant, contemporary edifices taint the skyline. I am not a fan of modern architecture, obviously. Train had three locomotives, CN 3265 and CN 2834 pulling as well as CN 2845 pushing.

CN 3800, CREX 1511, CN 2848
Title:  CN 3800, CREX 1511, CN 2848
Description:  A CN through freight passes the remnants of the former C&NW yard as it heads southwest at Oshkosh, WI on 18 Jun. '18. Train had three locomotives, CN 3800, CREX 1511, CN 2848. A cut of cars rests by the depot/yard office and a gondola rests on the team track. I was thrilled to find these cars here, because I thought it meant the local had made a daylight run (the Oshkosh local seems to usually be a nocturnal run). I waited for quite a while, but didn't see or hear any other signs of the local's presence. The depot/yard office sits at the approximate location of the C&NW's South Oshkosh depot, a smaller, plainer structure than their once ornate Oshkosh depot which still stands less than a mile to the north. Historically, everything south of the Fox River was once known as South Oshkosh. The C&NW South Oshkosh depot was saved from demolition, but its current fate is unknown to me. I have seen post-relocation photographs of it on the internet, but they do not reveal its precise location. Some references state it was moved to downtown Oshkosh, others state it was moved to a park in Oshkosh. If it still survives, I have not found it yet. Most of the yard was torn up in Aug. '16; they did leave the passing siding and team track. The 2013 bascule bridge over the Fox River, built to replace the 1899 swing bridge, is visible in the background to the left.

CN 2848, BNSF 6232, and CN 8808
Title:  CN 2848, BNSF 6232, and CN 8808
Description:  A CN through freight parallels Ehlers Rd. and approaches Towmen Rd. as it heads northeast via former SOO rails at Shawano Junction, WI, on 11 Apr. '21. The train is transitioning to the former C&NW rails. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. A left, a shiny, new, modern signal relay case stands where an awesome, old one once stood. To the right you can see some brand new signals. The installation commenced ca. 25 Apr. '20 and was completed ca. 3 Jul. '20. The new signals were activated and the old signals removed between 10 and 22 Aug. '20. It sure was nice of the railroad to complete some much-needed brush clearing along the tracks here so that train nuts like me can capture better views of their trains.

Title:  CN 2850 and CN 2855
Description:  CN through freight negotiates the S-curve at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 16 Apr. '14. Train had two very clean locomotives, CN 2850 and CN 2855. The pile of scrap visible to the left of the locomotive rests atop the remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened.

'17. Looking southeast along Thilmany Rd. It should be labeled Stribley Rd., but it appears that the remnants of Stribley Rd. and Thilmany Rd. will now just be referred to as the latter. Portions of both roads were altered or removed during the restoration lf the original Thilmany mill (out of frame to the right) and the creation of its new parking lot.

Title:  CN 2851 and CN 3068
Description:  CN container train parallels Hwy. 41 and approaches the Hwy. G overpass as it heads northeast via a remnant of the former C&NW main line at Snells, WI on 15 Apr. '17. Snells is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. A Post Office was established 4 May 1876, originally called Snell’s Station, sometimes referred to as Snell’s Crossing. This small, rural community once included a depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. It does not look like any real remnants of the original community remain. Even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone. CN 174812 MoW hi-rail is parked on the former SOO main line.

Title:  CN 3067, CN 2854, et al.
Description:  A CN unit train of tank cars passes a halted through freight and approaches the former Sherry St. grade crossing at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 25 Jan. '20. The unit train had two locomotives, CN 3067 and CN 3149. The through freight had three locomotives, CN 3189 and CN 2889 pulling as well as CN 2854 mid-train. The remnant of the Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility, 434 Sherry St., stands at left. It was built in 1902, after the original building was destroyed in a fire. The original 2-story brick building was constructed by Nicholas Simon in 1892, a 3rd story was added later. It was home to his N. Simon & Co., a cheese maker as well as wholesaler of butter, cheese and eggs, until he moved his company to Appleton, WI, ca. 1900. By the 1950s the facility was home to the L. D. Schreiber & Co. refrigerated warehouse. A 2-story section at the rear of the building was demolished at some point. It appears to be used for storage now, and has been for quite a while. The 1891 WC (later SOO) depot stood where the parking lot in the foreground now is. It replaced the ca. 1881 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest.

Description:  A CN through freight parallels Broad St. as it rounds a slight curve and approaches Waugoo Ave. while headed southwest via former C&NW rails at Oshkosh, WI on 24 Dec. '16. Train had three locomotives, CN 3029, CN 2856, ?? 2982. The former C&NW depot is partially visible in the background. Built by the Chicago firm of Clark & Fuller in 1884 on Broad St. between Washington Ave. and Merritt Ave. at a cost $15,000, it opened on 1 Dec. ’84. The last passenger train, the Peninsula “400,” departed on 31 Jun. ’71. Currently used by Clarity Care. I was hoping to get a full view of the south end of the depot in the shot, but the camera’s automatic focus feature did not do its job at the exact moment I hoped it would.

Description:  A CN container train hugs the western shore of Lake Winnebago as it heads north via former C&NW rails at Oshkosh, WI on 24 Feb. '18. Several ice fishing shanties can be seen out on the lake. I had hoped to capture a similar scene a week or two earlier, when there was much more activity on the ice, due to the sturgeon spearing season (the railroad did not cooperate). Train had two locomotives, CN 2856 pulling and CN 2987 pushing.
