CN 3075, CN 3058, LMIX RG316
Title:  CN 3075, CN 3058, LMIX RG316
Description:  A CN container train traverses the S-curve at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 18 Apr. '20. Train had two locomotives, CN 3075 pulling as well as CN 3058 mid-train. The remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot can be seen to the left of the lead locomotive. There are rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties stacked upon it. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. To the right, LMIX RG316 rests upon the north leg of the wye. Eggers Div. of VT Industries, 164 N. Lake St., an active rail customer, dominates the horizon. Founded at Neenah, WI, in 1910 as Hardwood Products Co., construction of the facility commenced in Oct. ’10. It was renamed Hardwood Products Corp. as a result of a merger with Mississippi Veneer & Lumber Co. on 20 Apr. ’22 (the latter company was formed by the same businessmen who founded the Neenah company). Eggers Industries acquired Hardwood Products Corp. in 1965 and renamed it Eggers Hardwood Products Corp. Eggers was founded by Fred W. Eggers at Two Rivers, WI in 1884 to make wood baskets used by farmers. They later started making plywood and other wood veneer products. The name was changed to simply Eggers Industries at some point. It was acquired by Holstein, IA, based VT Industries, Inc., on 2 Oct. ’18.

The far one is currently home to Interfaith Christian Assembly, 344 Smith St. The building was erected in 1929 and previously housed the Sawyer Paper Co., a paper dealer/wholesaler. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here.

CN 3059, CN 2861, CN 3276
Title:  CN 3059, CN 2861, CN 3276
Description:  A CN through freight parallels Union St. and passes the former Sherry St. grade crossing as it backs into the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 6 Jun. '20. The historic Murer House, 432 Sherry St., stands to the left. It was built by Felix Murer in 1892 (construction commenced the previous year). It was briefly (ca. 1893) known as the Northern Pacific Hotel, almost certainly a reference to the short-lived corporate relationship between the WC and NP railroads. It was owned by Joe Mayer [Meyer] ca. 1907, still known as the Murer House (likely Joseph A. Mayer). It was owned by Ole M. Lyken by 1914, it was known as the Lyken Hotel ca. 1920. Circa 1923-24 it was a grocery store owned by Mrs. Mary E. Lyken, Ole’s widow (he passed away in ’23). From at least 1928 until 1939, it was the Mayerl Grocery, owned by Mayme Mayerl. At some point it was turned into a tavern and is currently home to Sherry Town Station. Previous names of the bar include (in no particular order), Susie’s Trackside, Chesapeake Pub, Gigi’s, Mychal’s Bar (Mychal’s On Sherry Street), Sit and Sip Tavern, et al. The historic Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility, 434 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond the train. It was built in 1902 after the original 1892 building was destroyed by fire and is currently used for storage. The parking lot to the left was the site of the WC (later SOO) depot, built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here.

The remnant of the Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility, 434 Sherry St., stands at left. It was built in 1902, after the original building was destroyed in a fire. The original 2-story brick building was constructed by Nicholas Simon in 1892, a 3rd story was added later. It was home to his N. Simon & Co., a cheese maker as well as wholesaler of butter, cheese and eggs, until he moved his company to Appleton, WI, ca. 1900. By the 1950s the facility was home to the L. D. Schreiber & Co. refrigerated warehouse. A 2-story section at the rear of the building was demolished at some point. It appears to be used for storage now, and has been for quite a while. The 1891 WC (later SOO) depot stood where the parking lot in the foreground now is. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest.

Description:  CN container train parallels Hwy. 41 and approaches the Hwy. G overpass as it heads northeast via a remnant of the former C&NW main line at Snells, WI on 15 Apr. '17. Snells is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. A Post Office was established 4 May 1876, originally called Snell’s Station, sometimes referred to as Snell’s Crossing. This small, rural community once included a depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. It does not look like any real remnants of the original community remain. Even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone. CN 174812 MoW hi-rail is parked on the former SOO main line.

Title:  CN 3072, et al.
Description:  A pair of juveniles ran across the tracks in front of a CN through freight as it approached the former N. Union St. grade crossing as it headed northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 15 Jun. '18. The little, vapin’ miscreants found it amusing and taunted the crew. In the background are some bland, new apartments, Union Square Apartments. They were erected in '15 on the site of the historic Eagle Manufacturing Co. complex, between E. Winnebago St., N. Union St., E. Commercial St., and behind a row of houses on N. Drew St. Eagle Manufacturing Co., makers of gasoline engines, tractors, and other farm implements, was incorporated in ‘The Flats’ at Appleton, WI in Dec. 1888. When they outgrew that facility, they began construction of their factory here in ‘04. Over the years it grew until it occupied most of the block. Before its expansion, it shared the block with the Ideal Lumber and Coal Co. to the east. Further east of that was C. D. Rowell & Son, Manufacturing, makers of car movers, fronting N. Union St. between E. Winnebago St. and E. Commercial St. All 3 facilities were served by C&NW. There was a diamond in the middle of the east end of E. Winnebago St., just west of N. Union St., near the small clump of trees on the right, for at least two spurs leading into that block. Train had three locomotives, CN 3072, CN 3108, GTW 5850.

CN 3075 and LMIX RG316
Title:  CN 3075 and LMIX RG316
Description:  A CN container train traverses the S-curve at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 18 Apr. '20. Train had two locomotives, CN 3075 pulling as well as CN 3058 mid-train. The historic Neenah Stove Works, currently occupied by Hafemeister Machine Corp., 635 Main St., and International Children's Fund, 619 Main St., is partially visible in the background to the left. The oldest part of the facility dates to 1857, when the Moore & Wells foundry was established. To the right, LMIX RG316 rests upon the north leg of the wye. Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill, is partially visible beyond that. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye. Eggers Div. of VT Industries, 164 N. Lake St., an active rail customer, stands near the center of the background. ’18. There used to be 3 spurs to service the facility, now there is only 1. Clearwater Paper Corp., historically Kimberly-Clark’s Lakeview mill, 249 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI (physically located in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016)), an active rail customer, is partially visible in the background at right.

Title:  CN 2895, CN 3076
Description:  A CN container train passes Arrowhead Park as it heads northwest via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 10 Apr. '18. Train had two locomotives, CN 2895, CN 3076. The Neenah Stove Works, currently occupied by Hafemeister Machine Corp. and International Children's Fund, is partially visible background right. [The facility has undergone numerous name changes in its long history, but if one were to pick a generic and historic name for it, it would need to be Neenah Stove Works because that is what it was referred to for so many years, through several changes in ownership. The second most common generic reference would be the Neenah foundry, because for many years it was the only foundry in Neenah, but obviously that could cause confusion today.]

Train had two locomotives, CN 3084 pulling and ? pushing. At left, SOO 519043 rests on former C&NW rails. Quite an usual spot to find a solitary autorack. Plus, I don't encounter SOO equipment near this former SOO main line often enough, so I was compelled to attempt to incorporate it within the scene. Unfortunately the natural lighting was less-than ideal.

Description:  A CN unit train of tank cars passes the Main St. overpass as it traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 23 Dec. '18. Train had three locomotives, CN 3041 and UP 5421 pulling as well as CN 3084 pushing. The north leg of the wye can be seen in the foreground. The front facade of the remaining portion of the Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility, 434 Sherry St., is visible under the overpass, beyond the bridge pier. It was built in 1902 after the original building, constructed by Nicholas Simon in 1892, was destroyed in a fire. The historic Murer House (currently home to Sherrytown Station), 432 Sherry St., can be seen to the left of that. It was built by Felix Murer in 1892, construction commenced the previous year. The WC (later SOO) depot stood on this side of those two buildings; it was built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye (just out-of-frame to the right). The Winneconne Ave. overpass can be seen in the background.

Description:  CN through freight heads south at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 8 Oct. '17. Train had four locomotives, CN 3119 and CN 3086 up front, as well as CN 2805 and CN 2923 mid-train. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, it stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished. Part of the fence on this side of the tracks has been temporarily removed, they were preparing to replace some of the turnouts on this end of the yard.
