CN 2823, et al.
Description:
A CN unit train of tank cars approaches N. Lake St. as it heads southeast via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 10 Apr. '18. Train had three locomotives, CN 2823, CN 287x, CN 2978. The boxcar at left waits to spotted at Eggers Industries. The boxcars at right rest in a small ancillary yard behind Clearwater Paper Corp., historically Kimberly-Clark’s Lakeview mill, in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, WI until 14 Apr. '16). A man in a conspicuity vest is visible between the two cuts of cars at right. His behavior was quite odd. He was doing something near the coupler of NOKL 600005, the car to his left, until he noticed the train approaching. Then he moved to the side of the boxcar and crouched down. I did not notice him after the train cleared the grade crossing.

Title:
CN 2831 and CN 8024 on the Oliver Bridge
Description:
A CN container train crosses the unique double-decked Oliver Bridge as it heads west via former DM&IR rails at Oliver, WI on 26 Jun. '16. Train had four locomotives, CN 2831 and CN 8024 pulling and CN 2252 and CN 2309 pushing. The Oliver Bridge is a double-deck, Warren truss, swing bridge built by the American Bridge Co. in 1910. It was built to connect the Spirit Lake Transfer Railway in MN to the Interstate Transfer Railway in WI, both became part of the DM&N. The bridge was named in honor of Henry W. Oliver, founder the Oliver Mining Co. It is 1,889’ long, 25’ wide, with a 306’ swing span. Due to the intent to span a navigable interstate waterway, the plans needed the approval of the War Dept. and Congress. The War Dept. required a movable span to enable river traffic. Congress required the accommodation of vehicular traffic. The railroads initially ignored the requirement to accommodate vehicular traffic; while most of the lower deck was built with the rest of the bridge in ‘10, the decking for the roadway was not installed and the approaches to connect roads to the bridge were not built. They ultimately conceded in ‘16 and the lower deck opened to traffic in ‘17. The roadway decking consisted of wooden planks until the timbers were replaced with concrete in 2001. The upper deck was built to be double tracked, but it is uncertain if it ever was. Some references are positive that it was double tracked, but one set was removed at some unknown point. Other references are sure that the second set of tracks were intended for an interurban line which ultimately never crossed the bridge, so that second set was never laid. Several references claim the bridge never operated as swing bridge, but there is plenty of information on the internet (if you extend your search beyond Wikipedia) to confirm that it did indeed function as such from when it was built until ca. ‘47. From about 1890 until at least 1942, excursion boats made frequent runs from Duluth to Fond du Lac, MN to carry passengers for day trips, weekend outings, and vacations. The Clow & Nicholson Transportation Co. was the prominent excursion line, from at least 1902 to 1942 their steamers Plowboy, Newsboy, Rotarian, Columbia, and Montauk (possibly others) made the 19 mile trip up river. A Minn. DoT bridge report also states that the DM&N, later DM&IR, had a bridge tender on duty continuously, in accordance with navigation laws, until 1953. That is when they received permission to stop manning the bridge due to the decline of river traffic, but they were required to maintain the ability to open the bridge on 3 hours’ notice if a ship needed to pass. The swing mechanism was disabled at some point.

Description:
A CN container train passes CN 68530, former WC 315, Jordan spreader and parallels Harrison St. as it heads northeast through the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 29 Apr. '18. I think CN 68530 is a Type J, 4-100 (http://www.trainweb.org/JordanSpreader/). If it was indeed built in 1982, it was one of the last spreaders built at the original Jordan facility at East Chicago, IN.

CN unit train of tank cars parallels Broad St. and approaches E. Parkway Ave. (and an awesome relic of the line's historic owner) as it heads north via former C&NW rails at Oshkosh, WI on 9 Dec. '17. I've passed this grade crossing countless times, but never attempted to shoot a train here, so I never noticed the C&NW sign before. I love the interesting and unique ampersand the C&NW occasionally used. I must attempt to catch a train here again when the sign is not backlit. The former C&NW freight house is partially visible in the background (to the left of the newer WC 'No Trespassing' sign).

CN 2833
Description:
A CN through freight passes the former Sherry St. grade crossing and parallels Union St. as it heads south at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 1 May '19. Train had two locomotives, CN 2874 pulling and CN 2833 mid-train. The historic Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility, 434 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond the locomotive. It was built in 1902 after the original 1892 building was destroyed by fire and is currently used for storage. The historic Murer House, 432 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond that. It was built by Felix Murer in 1892 and is currently home to Sherry Town Station. The WC (later SOO) depot stood on the opposite side of Sherry St. from those two buildings; it was built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1881 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard here.
