Description: |
CN local crosses Milwaukee St. as it heads west via former joint MILW/SOO rails at Menasha, WI on 16 Mar. '18. The tank car partially visible at right marks the approximate location of a turnout which allowed each road to continue to their separate, but adjacent, yards. The lines converged again at the east end of the yards to continue jointly to Hilbert. |

A CN local approaches N. Lynndale Dr. as it prepares to spot a car for Wisconsin Building Supply, 222 N. Lilas Dr., out-of-frame to left, via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 4 Aug. '19. Local was on its way back from New London. The east end of the Marketplace Shopping Center, 2700 W. College Ave., Appleton, WI, can be seen at left. This portion is currently vacant, since WG&R Furniture moved to their new facility at the intersection of W. Wisconsin Ave. and Hwy. 41. If I remember correctly, this shopping center was built around the old Prange Way store in the 1980s. |

Description: |
A CN local parallels W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd., passes Milepost BG 211, and approaches Stroebe Rd. as it heads northeast with 20 cars via former C&NW rails at Stroebe, WI on 10 Nov. '19. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016). The former SOO rails run parallel to the right. Modern maps tend to omit the W. from W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd. for some reason, it is also absent on the current street sign. Some old maps include the W., some old maps omit the W. Local was headed for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna. |

A heavily powered CN local crosses W. 2nd St. as it prepares to set out a string of cars at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 15 Nov. '19. Local would continue on to Little Chute and Kaukauna. Carter's Caboose, 1428 W. 2nd St., a small, old, rail side tavern, is partially visible at left. It dates to at least 1887, when it was a grocery store operated by Peter Leininger. By 1901 it was a sample room (saloon) operated by John Sigl. By ‘30 it was a soft drink establishment owned by Hubert J. Merkel and August F. Brandt (Prohibition was still in effect). By ’36 it was a tavern operated by Albert Giesen, owned by Mrs. Gretchen Merkel. By ’38 it was Bob’s Tavern, still owned by Mrs. Merkel. It was the Junction Tavern from at least ’43-’71, still owned by Mrs. Merkel until at least ’60 (there were at least two different owners between ’67-’71). At some point in the ‘70s it became Pete’s Junction (possibly Palomino Pete’s Junction). It was called Netticoat Junction ca. the ‘90s (owned by Joanne M. ‘Nettie’ Nett). I haven’t learned how long it has been Carter’s Caboose. |

Description: |
A CN local momentarily fouls Racine St. while working in the former SOO yard at Menasha, WI on 6 Dec. '19. The small white building in the background, at 403 Racine St., was the home of Dave's Burger Shanty for many years (from at least the ‘60s to the early ‘90s). Several short-lived restaurants have occupied it since, most recently Mr. Taco/Mrs. Fajitas and Foxxy Chicken. Since May ’18 it has been the base for some food truck. |

CN 3823, GTW 5812, et al. |
Description: |
A CN through freight and a local meet along Union St. at the former Sherry St. grade crossing at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 23 Apr. '22. Through freight had three locomotives, CN 3823 and NS 4384 pulling, as well as NS 4064 mid-train. Local was headed for Waupaca and had one locomotive, GTW 5812. The historic Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility and the Murer House are partially visible beyond the train. The WC (later SOO) depot stood on the opposite side of Sherry St. from those two buildings. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built. A 1909 map shows the yard still here, a 1936 map depicts both the old and new yards. The Main St. overpass is in the background to the left. |
