Album Info:Most, if not all, of the photographs in this album were captured in Northeast Wisconsin in the winter of 2021, so they are mostly CN operating on former C&NW, GB&W, MILW, and SOO rails. Once in a while I try to catch ELS and WSOR on former MILW rails too.

GTW 4903
Title:  GTW 4903
Description:  A CN local crosses the Fox River Navigation Canal at Lock No. 3 via the former C&NW swing bridge as it hauls 10 cars westward through 'The Flats' at Appleton, WI, on 24 Dec. '20. Local was returning from Kimberly and Combined Locks. I haven't noticed a builder's plate, but according to bridgehunter.com, the Warren through truss swing bridge was built in 1908. However, a recent contributor to that site believes it was built after 1919. A photograph caption in the Post-Crescent on 29 May 1974 states that the bridge was "nearly 50 years old." This view was captured from the abandoned former C&NW steel stringer bridge over the Fox River, which opened earlier this year as a recreational trail. I used to think that the abandoned bridge was former MILW, but I have since learned that it was C&NW. In the background you can see First Congregational United Church of Christ, 724 E. South River St. Over the past several years, I have noticed that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Flats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some other variation. For all of my life, the historic, industrial heart of Appleton has been simply ‘The Flats.’ However, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries it was referred to as 'The Water Power.'

Description:  An E&LS train rests on the south leg of the wye at the former MILW yard at Crivitz (originally Ellis Junction), WI, on 1 Jan. '21. This wye is the northwestern terminus of the former M&N Menominee Branch. The locomotive was idling and the headlights were on (dimmed), so I thought it was ready to go somewhere. It was not to be.

I am nearly certain that this is the depot built by the M&N when the line was laid in 1883 (I haven't found any indication that the original depot was replaced).

Title:  ELS 402
Description:  The south and west walls of the E&LS, former MILW, depot 414 Hall Ave., Crivitz (originally Ellis Junction), WI, on 1 Jan. '21. I am nearly certain that this is the depot built by the M&N when the line was laid in 1883 (I haven't found any indication that the original depot was replaced). This is the southern corner of the large wye formed by the main line running north-south, in front of the depot, and the branch running southeastward to Menominee, MI, behind the depot. The wye is the western terminus of the former M&N Menominee Branch. To the right, an E&LS train rests on the south leg of the wye. The locomotive was idling and the headlights were on (dimmed), so I thought it was ready to go somewhere. It was not to be.

IC 3138
Title:  IC 3138
Description:  A CN local approaches Military Rd. as it heads southeast with 16 cars via former joint MILW/SOO rails at Sherwood, WI, on 8 Jan. '21. Sherwood Elevator stands to the left. Sherwood Elevator has been owned, operated, and expanded by the Kress family since they purchased it in 1951. Their grain terminal has a capacity of 1 million bushels. Unfortunately the elevator has not received rail service for quite a while. To the right you can see the last remnant of the former MILW depot. The depot was used by MILW and SOO until 17 Sep. ‘71, when they were granted permission to close it. This must be the smallest union depot I've ever seen. It has been moved a short distance for use as an outbuilding on a farm. This area used to be referred to as Sherwood Station or Lower Sherwood.

Title:  EJE 703
Description:  A CN local crosses Washington St. as it prepares to service Chemtrade (formerly General Chemical Corp.), 388 Ahnaip St., via former C&NW rails on Doty Island at Menasha, WI, on 13 Jan. '21. The awesome, old building partially visible beyond the train is currently home to Expert Driveline Truck & Auto Repair, 216 Washington St. Built in '35 for Verbrick's Service Co., Norbert F. Verbrick, proprietor; it operated as such until '84. Designed by Henry Auler in the Tudor Revival style, it and the adjacent building at 214 Washington St. (originally offices of Northwest Electrolyte and Engraving, also designed by Auler in the Tudor Revival style) were erected on what had long been a stave yard for the Menasha Wooden Ware Co. Wayne's Towing and Service occupied this building for quite a while between the original and current occupants. It is difficult to imagine that then Washington Ave. was once also Hwy. 41, until that highway was relocated to what was then the rural outskirts of the Fox Cities in the 1940s.

Title:  CN 3089, EMDX 7218, et al.
Description:  A CN through freight passes the sad remnants of the former C&NW yard and approaches Pioneer Dr. as it heads northeast at Oshkosh, WI, on 12 Feb. '21. Train had four locomotives, CN 3089, EMDX 7218, GTW 4620, CN 5449. Most of the yard was torn up in Aug. '16; they did leave the passing siding and team track. This crew was gracious enough to stop in Neenah so that I (and several other train nuts) could capture better photographs of EMDX 7218.

Description:  A CN through freight parallels Union St. and passes the former Sherry St. grade crossing as it backs into the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 12 Feb. '21. The historic Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility, 434 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond the train. It was built in 1902 after the original 1892 building was destroyed by fire and is currently used for storage. The historic Murer House, 432 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond that. It was built by Felix Murer in 1892 and is currently home to Sherry Town Station. The Main St. overpass is partially visible in the background to the left. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here.

It was built by Felix Murer in 1892 and is currently home to Sherry Town Station. The WC (later SOO) depot stood on the opposite side of Sherry St. from those two buildings; it was built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here.

CN 2321 and CN 5341
Title:  CN 2321 and CN 5341
Description:  A CN unit train of auto racks parallels Union St. and passes the former Monroe St. grade crossing as it heads north past the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 14 Feb. '21. To the left, CN 5341 sorts cars at the north end of the yard. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here. The building partially visible to the right, 716 Harrison St. (I believe the historic address is 520 Union St.), still used by Neenah Foundry, I believe, was recently spruced up with a fresh coat of paint and some new doors last year. There was no overhead door on this end until a month or two ago. The Winneconne Ave. overpass stands beyond that. It was erected ca. 1988 in order to eliminate the busiest grade crossing in the area.
