Description: |
A CN through freight parallels Harrison St. and passes the W. Cecil St. overpass (Timothy Hamblin Bridge) as it heads northeast via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 27 Feb. '18. Consist included approximately 25 loaded CWRX rail cars. If my math is correct, the approximately 1/4-mile long rail segments could be joined together to form a section of continuous welded rail approximately 12-1/2 miles long somewhere. The W. Cecil St. overpass (Timothy Hamblin Bridge), erected to eliminate the grade crossing, opened to traffic on 20 Nov. '07. |

TBOX 668208 |
Description: |
TBOX 668208 rests in the CN, former SOO, yard at Neenah, WI on 27 Feb. '18. I normally don't give newer freight cars a second glance, but this one piqued my interest because it looks like someone's vandalism has been defaced. My first thought was, maybe some concerned citizen objected to the word 'Ass' and the counterfeit Bart Simpson's exposed buttocks, but that doesn't seem likely. Another vandal defacing a rival vandal's work seems like a more plausible scenario. |

CN 9455 |
Description: |
CN local crosses N. Lake St. as it services the large Clearwater Paper Corp. mill, historically Kimberly-Clark’s Lakeview mill via former SOO rails at Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, WI until 14 Apr. '16) on 28 Feb. '18. Originally incorporated as Lakeside Paper Co. on 9 Nov. 1910, construction of the mill began in ’11, and paper production commenced on 12 Jun. ‘12. At some point they started to sell a large share of their book paper production to Sears, Roebuck & Co. for their catalogues. The mill was sold and re-incorporated as Lakeview Paper Co. on 9 Aug. ’20. Sears, Roebuck & Co. bought the facility ca. the mid- to late-‘20s. The mill was shut down on 1 Feb. ’29 after a boiler failure and Sears promptly sold it to the Canadian firm of Fraser Paper, Ltd. (which also produced book paper for Sears). Fraser did not hold it long, they sold it to Kimberly-Clark Corp. ca. Mar. ’29. Kimberly-Clark sold the facility to American Tissue Mills ca. Aug. ’96. The mill abruptly shut down on 6 Sep. ’01 due to American Tissue’s significant financial problems. The briefly idled mill was purchased by Cellu Tissue Corp. in ’02 and was renamed Cellu Tissue Corp. - Neenah, commonly shortened to Cellu Tissue - Neenah. Cellu Tissue Corp. was acquired by Clearwater Paper Group in ’10. The mill is a longtime rail customer, a map from 1955 shows 6 spurs to service this paper mill, now there are 2, but only this sees regular use. |

CN 5626 and CN 2164 |
Description: |
CN container train parallels Hwy. 41 and passes American Colloid Co. as it heads southwest via former SOO rails at Snells, WI on 28 Feb. '18. American Colloid is serviced by CN via former C&NW rails. Snells, formerly known as Snell’s Station or Snell’s Crossing, is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. This small, rural community once included a post office, depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. Snells was located at Mile 183 on the SOO’s Trevor to Somerset line and Mile 173.1 on the C&NW’s Milwaukee to Marinette line. I do not know if each railroad had their own small depot, or if one small depot served both railroads, I suspect it was the latter. It does not look like any real remnants of the original community remain. Even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone. |

Description: |
A pair of sequentially numbered MWCX, former ROCK 'Route Rock,' covered hoppers spotted on CN, former C&NW, rails at American Colloid Co. at Snells, WI on 28 Feb. '18. It appears as if both cars have been vandalized by the same miscreant. |
