Title:
CN 3030, UP 5316, BNSF 4573, CN 2530
Description:
A pair of CN trains meet on the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 18 Aug. '18. Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill, lies beyond the trains. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye, partially visible between the lead locomotives. At right, a large quantity of fill is being added to the eastern half of the park, in preparation of future improvements. The Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant) dominated the eastern half of the landfill from its opening in Jan. '98 until demolition was completed in the spring of '16. The former C&NW bridge, now part of the Friendship Trail (often erroneously referred to as the Trestle Trail), can be seen in the background. The Roland Kampo Bridge, a.k.a. the Polish Connection, can be seen beyond that. The foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot can be seen beyond the dumpsters at left. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. Train to the right was backing into the yard to set out and pick up cars and had two locomotives. Train to the left was just passing through.

CN 3041, UP 5421, et al.
Description:
A CN unit train of tank cars passes Arrowhead Park and approaches the Main St. overpass as it traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 23 Dec. '18. Train had three locomotives, CN 3041 and UP 5421 pulling as well as CN 3084 pushing. The historic Neenah Stove Works, currently occupied by Hafemeister Machine Corp., 635 Main St., and International Children's Fund, 619 Main St., is partially visible in the background. The oldest part of the facility dates to 1857, when the Moore & Wells foundry was established. The north leg of the wye is also visible.

Train had three locomotives, CN 3041 and UP 5421 pulling as well as CN 3084 pushing. The north leg of the wye can be seen in the foreground. The front facade of the remaining portion of the Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility, 434 Sherry St., is visible under the overpass, beyond the bridge pier. It was built in 1902 after the original building, constructed by Nicholas Simon in 1892, was destroyed in a fire. The WC (later SOO) depot stood on this side of that facility; it was built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1881 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye (just out-of-frame to the right). The Winneconne Ave. overpass can be seen in the background.

CN 3192, UP 5466, et al.
Description:
A CN through freight parallels Union St. as it crosses over from the yard lead to the passing siding at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 29 Aug. '20. Train had four locomotives, CN 3192, UP 5466, CN 3046, GTW 4619. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here. A remnant of the former Adams St. grade crossing can be seen in the foreground.

Description:
A CN local and through freight meet along Union St. at the former Caroline St. grade crossing at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 29 Aug. '20. Local had one locomotive, IC 9568, with some unique, expedient hand-stenciling. Through freight had four locomotives, CN 3192, UP 5466, CN 3046, GTW 4619. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built. A 1909 map shows the yard still here, a 1936 map depicts both the old and new yards.

Description:
A 120-car coal train parallels W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd. and approaches Stroebe Rd. as it heads northeast via CN, former C&NW, rails at Stroebe, WI on 20 Aug. '17. The black diamonds were destined for Wisconsin Public Service's Pulliam Power Plant, a.k.a. J. P. Pulliam Generating Station, at Green Bay, WI. Train had three locomotives, UP 7987 and UP 7173 pulling as well as UP 6368 pushing. The track that diverges to the right crosses over to the former SOO main line, also in use by CN. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI until 14 Apr. '16 (not Outagamie Co., where Stroebe was erroneously placed on this site)).

An empty 120-car coal train slows to halt on the CN, former C&NW, siding at Stroebe, WI on 23 Aug. '17. Train was returning from Wisconsin Public Service's Pulliam Power Plant, a.k.a. J. P. The ongoing reconstruction of the Hwy. 41/Hwy. 441 (a.k.a. the Tri-County Expressway)/Hwy. 10 interchange (a.k.a. the Polish Connection) is partially visible in the foreground. The interchange opened to traffic on 30 Nov. '75. When Hwy. 10 was reconstructed and relocated ca. Description:
An interesting quartet of foreigners lead a unit train of 2-bay covered hoppers parallel to Hwy. 41 and approaching the Hwy. G overpass while headed northeast via CN, former SOO, rails at Snells, WI on 12 Jul. '18. Snells, formerly known as Snell’s Station or Snell’s Crossing, is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. This small, rural community once included a post office, depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. It does not look like any real remnants of the original community remain. Even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone. The former C&NW rails, also in use by CN, run parallel on other side of the train. The facility at left, with Veriha Trucking banners, has an indoor spur, but I don't know if it is currently used. I believe it is, or was, owned by RGL Logistics, 1715/1725 Dixie Rd., Neenah, WI (physically located in Town of Neenah). Previous occupants of the facility include Checker Logistics and Warehouse Specialists, Inc.
