CN 3000 and CN 3030
Title:  CN 3000 and CN 3030
Description:  A CN unit train of autoracks parallels Hwy. 41 and approaches the Hwy. G overpass as it heads northeast via former SOO rails at Snells, WI on 17 May '18. Snells, formerly known as Snell’s Station or Snell’s Crossing, is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. This small, rural community once included a post office, depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. It does not look like any real remnants of the original community remain. Even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone. The former C&NW rails run parallel on other side of the train. The facility at left has an indoor spur, but I don't know if it is currently used.

CN 3034 and CN 3002
Title:  CN 3034 and CN 3002
Description:  A CN container train crosses over from the former SOO rails to the former C&NW rails as it heads southwest at Neenah, WI on 30 Mar. '18. Train had two locomotives, CN 3034 and CN 3002. Components for a new turnout rest at left. Given that the sun light was neutral, I was hoping to photograph a train approaching Kampo Rd. from the northeast on the main line, for a change. That angle isn't be much good on a sunny afternoon, when I am usually over this way. I positioned myself here when I noticed a train approaching, only to be foiled once again by the crafty crew members of the CN (who decided to cross over to the passing siding instead).

CN 3002
Title:  CN 3002
Description:  A CN container train parallels Hwy. 41 as it heads southwest via former SOO rails at Snells, WI on 8 Dec. '19. Snells is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. A Post Office was established on 4 May 1876, originally called Snell’s Station, sometimes referred to as Snell’s Crossing. This once small, rural community included a depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. It does not look like any substantial remnants of the community remain, even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone (it is not a station on the current CN system map). Train had two locomotives, CN 3210 pulling and CN 3002 pushing. The through freight at left rests upon a remnant of the former C&NW main line, now relegated to a passing siding. I was trying to duplicate the view in an awesome photograph on this site which was recently chosen as an Editor's Pick, http://rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=2749619. The contributor (very deserving of the red ribbon) has labeled the location as Minneapolis, but I agree with one of the commenters who believes that the photograph was captured at Neenah. I did not get the angle quite right, plus I will need to try again when the sun is in a better position.

CN 8813, CN 2915, CN 3006, IC 1201
Title:  CN 8813, CN 2915, CN 3006, IC 1201
Description:  CN through freight slows to halt along Union St. at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 28 Apr. '16. Train had four locomotives, CN 8813, CN 2915, CN 3006, IC 1201. The lead locomotive is passing the former Sherry St. grade crossing. The WC (later SOO) depot was built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest.

CN 3007 and CN 2812
Title:  CN 3007 and CN 2812
Description:  A CN through freight parallels Union St. and passes the Main St. overpass as it leans into the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 19 May '18. The north leg of the wye can be seen near the bottom of the photograph. In the foreground, fill is being added to a portion of the park in preparation for future improvements to the park. The front facade of the remaining portion of the Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility, 434 Sherry St., Neenah, WI, is partially visible at left. It was built in 1902 after the original building was destroyed in a fire. The original 2-story brick building was constructed by Nicholas Simon in 1892, a 3rd story was added later. It was home to his N. Simon & Co., a cheese maker as well as wholesaler of butter, cheese and eggs, until he moved his company to Appleton, WI, ca. 1900. He was well-known both for the quality of his cheese as well as for making several gigantic cheeses. His largest weighed 12,361 lbs., was 8’ in diameter and 5’ thick, which he created on 15 Aug. ’11 at Appleton, WI, to be exhibited at the National Dairy Show held in Chicago later that year. By the 1950s the facility was home to the L. D. Schreiber & Co. refrigerated warehouse. A 2-story section at the rear of the building was demolished at some point. It appears to be used for storage now, and has been for quite a while.

CN 2985 and CN 3011
Title:  CN 2985 and CN 3011
Description:  A CN container train parallels Harrison St. and approaches the former Byrd Ave. grade crossing as it heads southwest past the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 19 May '18. A fellow train nut and I were enjoying an evening picnic (tasty vittles from the nearby Tom's Drive In) on the tail gate of his pickup truck, waiting to photograph passing trains. This train approaches, we grab our cameras, start shooting, and start to wonder why the engineer is laying on the horn. As our gaze follows the train as it passes us, we notice the reason for the horn. A moronic, trespassing, fat, old, grotesquely-bulging-spandex-clad, ersatz Lance Armstrong is dragging his bicycle across the tracks at the former Byrd Ave. grade crossing, right in front of the rapidly approaching freight train. When the engineer blew the horn, the moron flipped off the train crew and offered us a smug, arrogant grin while we stared in disbelief as he waddled away.

Description:  A CN train passes the former Caroline St. grade crossing as it prepares to halt at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 23 Jul. '23. The train was preparing to halt to allow a southbound train to pass. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard, built by WC in 1882. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built. A 1909 map shows the yard still here, a 1936 map depicts both the old and new yards.

Founded at Neenah, WI, in 1910 as Hardwood Products Co., construction of the facility commenced in Oct. ’10. It was renamed Hardwood Products Corp. as a result of a merger with Mississippi Veneer & Lumber Co. on 20 Apr. ’22 (the latter company was formed by the same businessmen who founded the Neenah company). Eggers Industries acquired Hardwood Products Corp. in 1965 and renamed it Eggers Hardwood Products Corp. Eggers was founded by Fred W. Eggers at Two Rivers, WI in 1884 to make wood baskets used by farmers. They later started making plywood and other wood veneer products. The name was changed to simply Eggers Industries at some point. It was acquired by Holstein, IA, based VT Industries, Inc., on 2 Oct. ’18. There used to be 3 spurs to service the facility, now there is only 1.

Title:  CN 3020
Description:  A CN through freight traverses the west leg of the wye and approaches the Main St. overpass as it prepares to halt at the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 9 Aug. '20. Train had three locomotives, CN 3136 and CN 3875 pulling as well as CN 3020 mid-train. On the far side of the train lies Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye. The former C&NW bridge across Little Lake Butte des Morts, now part of the Friendship Trail (often erroneously referred to as the Trestle Trail), can be seen in the background. The Roland Kampo Bridge, a.k.a. the Polish Connection, can be seen beyond that. The stack of concrete ties rest near the remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened

CN 2726 and CN 3020
Title:  CN 2726 and CN 3020
Description:  A CN container train parallels Union St. and approaches the Main St. overpass as it passes a halted through freight at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 9 Aug. '20. Container train had two locomotives, CN 2726 pulling and CN 3102 mid-train. Through freight had three locomotives, CN 3136 and CN 3875 pulling as well as CN 3020 mid-train. The parking lot in the background to the left was the site of the WC (later SOO) depot, built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest. On the far side of Sherry St. stands the remnant of the Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility, 434 Sherry St. 1900. By the 1950s the facility was home to the L. D. Schreiber & Co. refrigerated warehouse. A 2-story section at the rear of the building was demolished at some point. It appears to be used for storage now, and has been for quite a while. To the left of that stands the historic Murer House, 432 Sherry St. It was built by Felix Murer in 1892 (construction commenced the previous year). It was briefly (ca. ‘93) known as the Northern Pacific Hotel, almost certainly a reference to the short-lived corporate relationship between the WC and NP railroads. It was owned by Ole M. Lyken by ’14; it was known as the Lyken Hotel ca. ‘20. Circa ‘23-‘24 it was a grocery store owned by Mrs. Mary E. Lyken, Ole’s widow. From at least ‘28 until ‘39, it was the Mayerl Grocery, owned by Mayme Mayerl. At some point it was turned into a tavern and is currently home to Sherry Town Station. Previous names of the bar include (in no particular order), Susie’s Trackside, Chesapeake Pub, Gigi’s, Mychal’s Bar (Mychal’s On Sherry Street), Sit and Sip Tavern, et al. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here. The remnants of the foundation for the water tower or coaling tower can be seen at the lower right. I think this was the water tower, if so, the coaling tower stood about 70 feet to the south.

CN 3022
Title:  CN 3022
Description:  A northbound CN container train passes the depot/yard office and the sad remnants of the former C&NW yard at Oshkosh, WI on 22 Jan. '17. Train had two locomotives, CN 3022 pulling and CN 2873 mid-train. The depot/yard office sits at the approximate location of the C&NW's South Oshkosh depot, a smaller, plainer structure than their once ornate Oshkosh depot which still stands less than a mile to the north. Historically, everything south of the Fox River was once known as South Oshkosh. The C&NW South Oshkosh depot was saved from demolition, but its current fate is unknown to me. I have seen post-relocation photographs of it on the internet, but they do not reveal its precise location. Some references state it was moved to downtown Oshkosh, others state it was moved to a park in Oshkosh. If it still survives, I have not found it yet. The yard was torn up in Aug. '16. There had been no cars spotted here since at least 31 Jan. '16. They did leave the passing siding and team track.
