CN 2245, BNSF 7501, BNSF 8474, et al.
Title:  CN 2245, BNSF 7501, BNSF 8474, et al.
Description:  CN mixed freight crosses the frozen Rat River via the former SOO bridge and bisects the Rat River Wildlife Area as it speeds southeast at Medina Junction, WI on 23 Jan. '16. Train had five locomotives, CN 2245, BNSF 7501, BNSF 8474, CN 5552, CN 2344(?). I did not anticipate 5 locomotives, if I had I would have attempted to gain a vantage point from which I might have captured all of them in 1 frame.

CN 3870 and BNSF 8541
Title:  CN 3870 and BNSF 8541
Description:  A CN through freight passes the Main St. overpass and traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 30 Aug. '20. The white building partially visible at left is, or was, Progressive Paper Storage, Inc. (formerly Kimberly-Clark Warehouse (K-C Warehouse)), 135 Millview Dr. It does not receive rail service, but it looks like there may have been a spur on the northwest side of the building in the past. First Presbyterian Church, 200 S. Church St., can be seen above the warehouse. The clock tower of the once impressive 1888 city hall building, intersection of S. Commercial St. and W. Doty St., looks like a church steeple from this perspective, but it is a block east of the church.

CN 3870 and BNSF 8541
Title:  CN 3870 and BNSF 8541
Description:  A CN through freight traverses the west leg of the wye as it heads northwest at the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 30 Aug. '20. On the far side of the train lies Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye. The former C&NW bridge across Little Lake Butte des Morts, now part of the Friendship Trail (often erroneously referred to as the Trestle Trail), can be seen in the background. The Roland Kampo Bridge, a.k.a. the Polish Connection, can be seen beyond that.

Title:  BNSF 8555, BNSF 9365, BNSF 9702, and CP 402872
Description:  A trio of BNSF locomotives parked next to a CP Jordan spreader, CP 402872, at the CP, former MILW, yard at Portage, WI on 26 Jun. '14. CP 402872 was built in '50, appears to be a Type A Model 3-200 or maybe a Standard Model 2-180. Some useful information about Jordan equipment can be found at http://www.trainweb.org/JordanSpreader/sectionlist.htm.

BNSF 8758, BNSF 6263, BNSF 7543
Title:  BNSF 8758, BNSF 6263, BNSF 7543
Description:  A trio of interesting and colorful foreigners lead a unit train of 2-bay covered hoppers along Hwy. 41 and approaching the Hwy. G overpass while headed northeast via CN, former SOO, rails at Snells, WI on 27 Apr. '18. Snells, formerly known as Snell’s Station or Snell’s Crossing, is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. This once small, rural community included a depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. It does not look like any substantial remnants of the community remain, even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone. The former C&NW rails, also in use by CN, run parallel behind the brush to the left of the train.

I believe it is owned by RGL Logistics, 1715/1725 Dixie Rd., Neenah, WI (physically located in Town of Neenah). Previous occupants of the facility include Checker Logistics and Warehouse Specialists, Inc.

BNSF 9079 at MERC
Title:  BNSF 9079 at MERC
Description:  The traveling shiploader for Midwest Energy Resources Company (MERC), Superior, WI, as seen from the Vista Star during Vista Fleet's Grand Sightseeing Tour of the Duluth & Superior Harbor at Duluth, MN on 25 Jun. '16. Underground augers convey the coal from the massive storage pile (out of frame to right) after it is unloaded from the train via a rotary dumping machine. The coal is delivered by 123-car BNSF unit trains, 14,000 tons at a time. UP also brings coal, their trains are likely similar in size and capacity. Some regional customers bring in trucks to pick up their coal. The nose of BNSF 9079, lead unit of a coal train which has just arrived, near the center of the photograph under the maroon metal sheathed conveyor housing which feeds the traveling shiploader. This information comes from the facilities website, http://www.midwestenergy.com/, which includes some interesting videos as well. I was fortunate enough to receive a tour of this impressive facility with a well-known group of like-minded railroad history enthusiasts. The massive General Mills Superior Elevator S is partially visible at left. There are a couple of photographs of that facility in this album which include historical information about it. Additional information about the harbor cruise can be found at http://www.vistafleet.com/.

BNSF 5159 and BNSF 9147
Title:  BNSF 5159 and BNSF 9147
Description:  A pair of out-of-town visitors lead a unit train of 90 2-bay covered hoppers along Broad St. past the former C&NW depot while headed north at Oshkosh, WI on 22 Jan. '17. Train had two locomotives, BNSF 5159 and BNSF 9147. The depot's roof is partially visible above the train, the matching freight house is partially visible beyond the lead locomotive. Built by the Chicago firm of Clark & Fuller in 1884 on Broad St. between Washington Ave. and Merritt Ave. at a cost $15,000, it opened on 1 Dec. ’84. The last passenger train, the Peninsula “400,” departed on 31 Jun. ’71. Currently used by Clarity Care.

BNSF 9191 and BNSF 5940
Title:  BNSF 9191 and BNSF 5940
Description:  A pair of out-of-town visitors lead a through freight across Winchester Rd./Hwy. II as they head northwest via former SOO rails at Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, WI until 14 Apr. '16) on 5 Nov. '16. I thought the train was going to take the cross over and roll past me toward Stevens Point, but they faked me out and headed for Green Bay instead. The divergence of rail lines at Winchester Rd., where the line in the foreground heads northwest toward Stevens Point and the other line heads northeast toward Green Bay, is labeled Winnebago Junction on some old maps. The grade crossing in the foreground is Ehlers Rd.

Description:  A CN unit train of 2-bay covered hoppers crosses Kampo Rd. and approaches the W. Bell St. overpass as it heads southwest via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 4 Apr. '19. That train had three locomotives, CN 8801, BNSF 9369, IC 2713. Another CN unit train of 2-bay covered hoppers rests on a remnant of the former C&NW main line, now relegated to a passing siding, at right. That train had two locomotives, CN 2604 and CN 3044. Neenah Foundry Plant 2 & Plant 3 can be seen in the background. Plant 2 opened in 1960 and Plant 3 was built in 1967. Plant 1 opened in 1918 and stood about a mile to the north, until it was closed in 1994 and eventually demolished.
