BNSF 1089, BNSF 7823, BNSF 5732
Title:  BNSF 1089, BNSF 7823, BNSF 5732
Description:  A CN unit train of 2-bay covered hoppers parallels Harrison St. (just out-of-frame to the left) and approaches Kampo Rd. as it heads southwest via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 27 Jul. '19. Train had three locomotives, BNSF 1089, BNSF 7823, BNSF 5732. A remnant of the former C&NW main line, now relegated to a passing siding, runs parallel to the right. Neenah Foundry Plant 2 & Plant 3 are partially visible in the background. Plant 2 opened in 1960 and Plant 3 was built in 1967. Plant 1 opened in 1918 and stood about a mile to the north, until it was closed in 1994 and eventually demolished.

CSX 3131, BNSF 5791, UP 6473
Title:  CSX 3131, BNSF 5791, UP 6473
Description:  A colorful trio of foreign visitors lead a through freight parallel to Harrison St. and approaching Kampo Rd. as it heads southwest via CN, former SOO, rails at Neenah, WI on 14 May '18. A remnant of the former C&NW main line, now relegated to a passing siding, is visible to the right. I am curious to learn where the new turnout (stacked in pieces between the tracks) will be installed.

BNSF 5846 and CN 2860
Title:  BNSF 5846 and CN 2860
Description:  CN through freight crosses the frozen Wolf River via the former SOO bridge as it heads southeast at Gills Landing, WI on 24 Feb. '15. The bridge was built as a swing bridge in 1894. A significant mechanical failure left the pivot inoperable from 2003 until the fall of 2011, when it was converted into a vertical lift bridge. According to bridgehunter.com, it “is likely the only vertical-lift bridge in the world with a center lift tower”.

BNSF 9191 and BNSF 5940
Title:  BNSF 9191 and BNSF 5940
Description:  A pair of out-of-town visitors lead a through freight across Winchester Rd./Hwy. II as they head northwest via former SOO rails at Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, WI until 14 Apr. '16) on 5 Nov. '16. I thought the train was going to take the cross over and roll past me toward Stevens Point, but they faked me out and headed for Green Bay instead. The divergence of rail lines at Winchester Rd., where the line in the foreground heads northwest toward Stevens Point and the other line heads northeast toward Green Bay, is labeled Winnebago Junction on some old maps. The grade crossing in the foreground is Ehlers Rd.

BNSF 9079 and BNSF 6037 at MERC
Title:  BNSF 9079 and BNSF 6037 at MERC
Description:  BNSF 9079 and BNSF 6037 lead a coal train which has just arrived at Midwest Energy Resources Company (MERC), Superior, WI, as seen from the Vista Star during Vista Fleet's Grand Sightseeing Tour of the Duluth & Superior Harbor at Duluth, MN on 25 Jun. '16. Above the train is the conveyor which feeds the traveling shiploader, on the right is one of the loader's huge legs. The coal is delivered by 123-car BNSF unit trains, 14,000 tons at a time. UP also brings coal, their trains are likely similar in size and capacity. The coal is unloaded from the train via a rotary dumping machine and conveyed to a massive storage pile (out of frame to right). Underground augers convey the coal from that pile to the shiploader. Some regional customers bring in trucks to pick up their coal. This information comes from the facilities website, http://www.midwestenergy.com/, which includes some interesting videos as well. I was fortunate enough to receive a tour of this impressive facility with a well-known group of like-minded railroad history enthusiasts. Additional information about the harbor cruise can be found at http://www.vistafleet.com/.

Title:  BNSF 5693 and BNSF 6061
Description:  A through freight parallels Harrison St. as it heads northeast at the south end of the CN, former SOO, yard at Neenah, WI on 25 Jan. '20. Neenah Foundry Plant 2 & Plant 3 are partially visible in the background at left. Plant 2 opened in 1960 and Plant 3 was built in 1967. Plant 1 opened in 1918 and stood about a mile to the north, until it was closed in 1994 and eventually demolished. The W. Bell St. overpass can be seen in the distance to the right. A remnant of the former C&NW main line, now relegated to a passing siding runs parallel to the left.

CN 2848, BNSF 6232, and CN 8808
Title:  CN 2848, BNSF 6232, and CN 8808
Description:  A CN through freight parallels Ehlers Rd. and approaches Towmen Rd. as it heads northeast via former SOO rails at Shawano Junction, WI, on 11 Apr. '21. The train is transitioning to the former C&NW rails. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. A left, a shiny, new, modern signal relay case stands where an awesome, old one once stood. To the right you can see some brand new signals. The installation commenced ca. 25 Apr. '20 and was completed ca. 3 Jul. '20. The new signals were activated and the old signals removed between 10 and 22 Aug. '20. It sure was nice of the railroad to complete some much-needed brush clearing along the tracks here so that train nuts like me can capture better views of their trains.

BNSF 8758, BNSF 6263, BNSF 7543
Title:  BNSF 8758, BNSF 6263, BNSF 7543
Description:  A trio of interesting and colorful foreigners lead a unit train of 2-bay covered hoppers along Hwy. 41 and approaching the Hwy. G overpass while headed northeast via CN, former SOO, rails at Snells, WI on 27 Apr. '18. Snells, formerly known as Snell’s Station or Snell’s Crossing, is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. This once small, rural community included a depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. It does not look like any substantial remnants of the community remain, even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone. The former C&NW rails, also in use by CN, run parallel behind the brush to the left of the train.

I believe it is owned by RGL Logistics, 1715/1725 Dixie Rd., Neenah, WI (physically located in Town of Neenah). Previous occupants of the facility include Checker Logistics and Warehouse Specialists, Inc.
