CN 2598 and PRLX 211 (ex-BNSF, ex-ATSF)
Title:  CN 2598 and PRLX 211 (ex-BNSF, ex-ATSF)
Description:  A CN container train approaches Kampo Rd. as it heads southwest via a remnant of the former C&NW main line at Neenah, WI on 8 Mar. '18. Train had two locomotives, CN 2598 and PRLX 211 (former BNSF, former ATSF). I don’t get to see Warbonnets very often. Neenah Foundry Plant 2 & Plant 3 loom in the background. Plant 2 opened in 1960 and Plant 3 was built in 1967. Plant 1 opened in 1918 and stood about a mile to the north, until it was closed in 1994 and eventually demolished. I am curious to learn where the two new turnouts (stacked in pieces between the tracks) will be installed. The former SOO main line is in the foreground.

CN 2604 and CN 2412
Title:  CN 2604 and CN 2412
Description:  A CN unit train of empty centerbeam flatcars passes Neenah Foundry Plant 2 & Plant 3 as it crosses over from the former C&NW main line to the former SOO main line along Harrison St. at the south end of the yard at Neenah, WI on 22 Jun. '18. Plant 2 opened in 1960 and Plant 3 was built in 1967. Plant 1 opened in 1918 and stood about a mile to the north, until it was closed in 1994 and eventually demolished. Nightfall was setting in and I was attempting to use the nose of the leading locomotive to highlight the molten metal which could be seen flowing inside the foundry. Unfortunately, I opened the shutter a little earlier than I wanted to, so the lead locomotive is too far to the right. Also, the molten metal is not quite as noticeable within this scene as I had hoped it would be. C’est la vie!

CN 2608
Title:  CN 2608
Description:  CN through freight crosses what used to be the N. Union St. grade crossing and is about to disappear behind the north side of the historic Tuttle Press Co. mill as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 13 Jul. '13. Train was enroute to Green Bay from Stevens Point and had two locomotives, CN 2608 pulling and CN 5343 pushing. The factory dates to 1905, it later operated as Artfaire and finally as Sulpaco West, Inc. For nearly a century this facility produced a variety of renowned specialty papers: napkins, table covers, tissue, craft paper, paper dolls, gift boxes, crepe paper, and especially gift wrapping paper, until Sullivan Paper Co. shuttered this plant on 27 Jun. ’02 and moved production to one of its other facilities in Mass. Since then it appears to have been used as storage for one or more local businesses. There used to be a diamond on the opposite side of the tracks and to the left, where two spurs intersected to service several industries in that block.

CN 2612, CN 5731, CN 8877
Title:  CN 2612, CN 5731, CN 8877
Description:  A CN through freight rests along Hwy. 41 at Snells, WI on 28 Jan. '18. I can't tell if it has halted along the former SOO main line or the former C&NW main line, probably the latter. Snells, formerly known as Snell’s Station or Snell’s Crossing, is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. This small, rural community once included a post office, depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. Snells was located at Mile 183 on the SOO’s Trevor to Somerset line and Mile 173.1 on the C&NW’s Milwaukee to Marinette line. I do not know if each railroad had their own small depot, or if one small depot served both railroads, I suspect it was the latter. It does not look like any real remnants of the original community remain. Even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone.

Description:  A CN unit train of tank cars approaches Merritt Ave. and parallels Broad St. as it heads south via former C&NW rails at Oshkosh, WI on 28 Jan. '18. The former C&NW depot and freight house stand at left. Built by the Chicago firm of Clark & Fuller in 1884 on Broad St. between Washington Ave. and Merritt Ave. at a cost $15,000, it opened on 1 Dec. ’84. The depot was more ornate when completed, some of its interesting architectural elements have been removed over the years. The last passenger train, the Peninsula “400,” departed on 31 Jun. ’71. The depot is currently used by Clarity Care. Train had three locomotives, CN 2612, CN 5731, and CN 8877.

CN 2630 and CN 8957
Title:  CN 2630 and CN 8957
Description:  CN container train crosses the former Sherry St. grade crossing as it heads south past a halted through freight at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 24 Dec. '16. The guardrail marks the location of the former Sherry St. grade crossing. The WC (later SOO) depot was built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1881 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest. The white building beyond the train on the right is what remains of the Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility at 434 Sherry St. It was built in 1902 after the original building was destroyed in a fire. The original 2-story brick building was constructed by Nicholas Simon in 1892, a 3rd story was added later. It was home to his N. Simon & Co., a cheese maker as well as wholesaler of butter, cheese and eggs, until he moved his company to Appleton, WI, ca. 1900. He was well-known both for the quality of his cheese as well as for making several gigantic cheeses. His largest weighed 12,361 lbs., was 8’ in diameter and 5’ thick, which he created on 15 Aug. ’11 at Appleton, WI, to be exhibited at the National Dairy Show held in Chicago later that year. By the 1950s this facility was home to the L. D. Schreiber & Co. refrigerated warehouse. A 2-story section at the rear of the building was demolished at some point. The Main St. overpass is in the background at left.

Description:  CN through freight crosses Winchester Rd. as it heads southeast via former SOO rails at Town of Menasha, WI on 28 Mar. '14. The divergence of rail lines at Winchester Rd., where one line heads northwest toward Stevens Point and the other line heads northeast toward Green Bay, used to be named Winnebago Junction. Train was coming from Stevens Point and was slowing to stop at the north end of the Neenah yard so it could reverse direction and continue on to Green Bay. It had two locomotives CN 2639 pulling and GTW 5944 pushing. Prolamina, which clearly receives rail service is partially visible on the left. The Hwy. 41 overpass is visible in the background.

Description:  A CN through freight approaches the Hwy. G overpass and parallels Hwy. 41 as it heads northeast via former SOO rails at Snells, WI on 27 Apr. '18. Snells, formerly known as Snell’s Station or Snell’s Crossing, is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. This small, rural community once included a post office, depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. It does not look like any real remnants of the original community remain. Even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone. The former C&NW rails run parallel on the other side of the train.

Description:  CN unit train of 3-bay covered hoppers parallels Hwy. 41 and approaches the Hwy. G overpass as it heads southwest via former SOO rails at Snells, WI on 20 May '18. Snells is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. This once small, rural community included a depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. I do not know if each railroad had their own small depot, or if one small depot served both railroads, I suspect it was the latter. It does not look like any substantial remnants of the community remain, even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone (it is not a station on the CN system map). The unit train of tank cars at right rests upon the former C&NW main line. Neenah Foundry Plant 2 & Plant 3 are partially visible in the background at left.
