CN 2123 and CN 5662
Description:
CN mixed freight emerges from a tree line and approaches the Hwy. 10 overpass as it heads northwest via former SOO rail at Town of Clayton, Winnebago Co., WI (not to be confused with Village of Clayton in Polk Co., WI) on 11 Oct. '15. Train is about to pass what used to be the Center Rd. grade crossing, but that road was truncated short of the tracks during the Hwy. 10 expansion and relocation several years ago. The headlight arrangement on the lead locomotive appears unusual.

CN 5662 and BCOL 4601
Description:
A CN through freight passes the Main St. overpass and leans into the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 4 Feb. '19. Train had two locomotives,. The lead locomotive is passing the turnout for the north leg of the wye. The remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot rest on the opposite side of the locomotives. The rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties rest atop the remnants of the foundation. The masonry depot was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened.

CN 5735, CN 5666, IC 9568
Description:
A CN through freight parallels W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd./N. Lake St. and passes the approaches of the Roland Kampo Bridge (a.k.a. the Polish Connection) at the Hwy. 41/Hwy. 10/Hwy. 441 (a.k.a. Tri-County Expressway) interchange as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Stroebe, WI on 28 Jul. '19. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016). The interchange opened to traffic on 30 Nov. '75, at the time it was simply a bridge to provide access to Hwy. 41 from Menasha. When Hwy. 10 was reconstructed and relocated ca. '97, this interchange was not simultaneously reconstructed to form a full interchange. It was recently reconstructed and expanded; the new, now full interchange was dedicated on 11 Jul. '18. The former SOO rails, also in use by CN, run parallel to the right. W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd. becomes N. Lake St. underneath the Polish Connection. Modern maps tend to omit the W. for some reason, it is also absent on the current street sign, some old maps include the W., some old maps omit the W.

CN container train crosses the frozen Rat River via the former SOO bridge and bisects the Rat River Wildlife Area as it speeds southeast at Medina Junction, WI on 22 Jan. '15. One advantage of enduring our wonderful winter weather, the frozen water affords shots that would otherwise require hip-waders or a skiff.

CN 5673 and CN 2562
Description:
A CN through freight passes the depot/yard office and approaches W. 2nd St. as it heads northeast past the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 12 Sep. '19. The white building beyond the train is the former home of the Harry H. Long Moving and Storage Co., 1001 S. Douglas St., Appleton, WI. This building dates to at least 1953, when it was listed in the local directory (it was not listed in ’51). The building has a spur, but it hasn’t been used for quite a while (except for occasional MoW equipment). Now called Harry H. Long Moving Storage & Express, Inc., the company, founded in 1917, is still family owned. It moved to a larger facility in Town of Clayton, Winnebago Co., WI in 2001.

CN train momentarily halts on former GB&W rails at Amherst Junction, WI on 13 May '15. Train was waiting to head back toward Stevens Point, WI after spotting some cars on the siding at the end of the remnant of the GB&W main line. A MoW worker unloads his truck and adds to the pile of scrap iron amid other remnants of ongoing track maintenance. The former GB&W main line used to continue from the front of the locomotive out the lower right corner of the photograph toward Plover, WI, that right-of-way is now the Tomorrow River State Trail. The upper level of the unique union depot stood at the right edge of the photograph. This community used to be named Groversburg.

CN 5681, et al.
Description:
A CN through freight parallels Broad St. and passes the former C&NW depot as it heads north at Oshkosh, WI on 8 Jun '18. Built by the Chicago firm of Clark & Fuller in 1884 at a cost $15,000, it opened on 1 Dec. ’84. The depot was more ornate when completed, some of its interesting architectural elements have been removed over the years. The last passenger train, the Peninsula “400,” departed on 31 Jun. ’71. The depot is currently used by Clarity Care. I used to believe that this depot replaced the older MLS&W depot which stood at Warren St. and Jay St. (both streets no longer exist but the site was southwest of the intersection of Pearl Ave. and Jackson St.), because the MLS&W was a subsidiary of the C&NW. I recently learned that both roads operated independently in Oshkosh until at least 1893, when the MLS&W was completely absorbed by the C&NW. In fact, the MLS&W also built a new stone depot in Oshkosh in 1894, to replace their older, wooden depot. Some references state, erroneously, that this depot replaced the C&NW's South Oshkosh depot. However, the C&NW operated both depots for years after this one was completed. Train had two locomotives, CN 5681 and CN 5719.

CN 5690, et al.
Description:
A CN through freight parallels W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd. and passes the nearly completed reconstruction of the Hwy. 41/Hwy. 10/Hwy. 441 (a.k.a. Tri-County Expressway) interchange (a.k.a. the Polish Connection) as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Stroebe, WI on 3 Jul. '18. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI until 14 Apr. '16 (not Outagamie Co., where Stroebe was erroneously placed on this site)). The interchange opened to traffic on 30 Nov. '75. When Hwy. 10 was reconstructed and relocated ca. '97, this interchange was not simultaneously reconstructed to form a full interchange, but the ongoing, extensive expansion and reconstruction will make it a full interchange as well as increase traffic capacity. The former SOO rails, also in use by CN, run parallel to the right. W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd. (foreground) becomes N. Lake St. (background) underneath the Polish Connection. Modern maps tend to omit the W. for some reason, it is also absent on the current street sign. Some old maps include the W., some old maps omit the W. I believe the train was headed to Green Bay from Stevens Point; it had two locomotives, CN 5690 pulling and CN 2630 pushing. The photograph of the trailing unit did not turn out.

Description:
CN through freight approaches the Main St. over pass as it traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI 13 Dec. '17. Train had three locomotives, IC 2725, CN 5691, CN 2298. The rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties, visible to the left of the locomotives, rest atop the remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. The silo in the background belongs to Eggers Industries (originally Hardwood Products Corp.), 164 N. Lake St., a periodic rail customer. The woodpile background left contains remnants of old telephone poles which were removed from somewhere along the line earlier this year. The east leg of the wye is in the foreground.

The Neenah Stove Works, currently occupied by Hafemeister Machine Corp., 635 Main St. and International Children's Fund, 619 Main St., is partially visible background left. [The facility has undergone numerous name changes in its long history, but if one were to pick a generic and historic name for it, it would need to be Neenah Stove Works because that is what it was referred to for so many years, through several changes in ownership. The second most common generic reference would be the Neenah foundry, because for many years it was the only foundry in Neenah, but obviously that could cause confusion today.] Clearwater Paper Corp., formerly Kimberly-Clark’s Lakeview mill, 249 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI (physically located in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, WI until 14 Apr. '16)), stands background right. The east leg of the wye is in the foreground.

Description:
A CN container train traverses the west leg of the wye and approaches the Main St. overpass at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 1 Oct. '20. The locomotives are passing the remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot. There are rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties stacked upon it. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. On the far side of the train lies Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye. Clearwater Paper Corp., historically Kimberly-Clark’s Lakeview mill, 249 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI (physically located in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016)), an active rail customer, is partially visible in the background to the right. The new, concrete railroad ties which were recently laid out next to the main line have even more recently been picked up and re-stacked.
